Chapter 82: What’s taking her so long?
"Keep your tone low," Seraphina muttered, gesturing urgently for him to sit down. Vlad had gathered the attention of the other customers as well, everyone looking at the duo with furrowed brows and disapproving glances.
"Are you a child?" she hissed, her eyes narrowing in both embarrassment and annoyance. Her cheeks flushed slightly.
"I-I’m sorry," Vlad replied, his tone low but still stuttering from the casual revelation Seraphina had just dropped. "Our principal is a dragon?" He asked again, needing to make sure he had not misheard.
"Does her name not already make it clear?" Seraphina replied with a sigh, shaking her head. "She is Lirien Argent Sigvorn. Argent is the surname for the Silver Dragons, and Sigvorn is the title that only Primordial Dragons receive."
Vlad did not know anything about that. Not only him, barely anyone was aware of such knowledge. Even in the academy, hardly one percent of the students were actually aware of this fact.
Seraphina possessed such information because her father, Lucas Cendral, one of the five heroes, was a disciple of Lirien. She had naturally obtained that knowledge from him and thought it was simply a common matter of fact.
Now everything made sense to Vlad. The unusually long life of Lirien, her strange appearance, and the unsurmountable power she possessed. If she was truly a dragon, those were the least of her abilities. The thought sent a shiver down his spine.
The revenge he had planned for teleporting him to Seraphina’s room seemed quite far from his reach now.
While they continued their chatting, the waitress returned with a small wheeled table, multiple dishes placed neatly upon it, their aromas filling the air. Steam rose from the plates, carrying the scent of herbs and spices.
The duo began their dinner in the warm light of the chandelier. The sun had already completely set, the sky now black, twinkling with countless stars that dotted the velvet darkness.
The food was surprisingly delicious. Every piece Vlad put in his mouth instantly melted on his tongue, releasing a rich, complex flavour that danced across his palate. Each bite only increased his hunger instead of calming it, the taste demanding more.
’How happy Chloe would be if she could eat something this delicious?’ The thought appeared in his mind. He could already imagine the bright smile hidden beneath her stoic face as she gobbled down such fine dishes, her eyes sparkling with quiet joy. The image was already melting his heart. Chloe’s smile was his favourite treat, after all.
’I must bring her here with me someday,’ he made the silent promise to himself, a gentle smile spreading across his face.
While he was faintly smiling at the thought, a sharp kick struck his leg under the table.
"Are you thinking about another girl?" Seraphina asked, her pink eyes narrowed at him, her fork frozen mid-air.
’Damn crazy instincts!’ Vlad gasped inwardly before replying, "I was thinking about Chloe."
He certainly did not know when he should keep some words to himself. Seraphina’s brows furrowed at his answer, her jaw tightening.
"We will be splitting the bill!" she declared, as nothing else came to her mind.
"Y-you can’t do that," Vlad instantly protested, leaning forward. He revealed, his voice dropping to a whisper, "I only have a few bronze taels with me."
"Not my problem. Wash the dishes, or ask the girl you were thinking about to pay for your bill," she declared with a pout, turning her face aggressively sideways, her hair swaying with the motion.
Vlad did not understand the reason for her sudden anger, nevertheless, he needed to calm her urgently, or he might have to spend his whole life working in the restaurant to clear the debt. The thought was terrifying.
"Sera, if I become a worker here, I will not be able to serve you as your errand boy," he said, his tone pleading. "Please let me serve you instead of them."
’I could attend the academy while serving her, and she does not make any excessive demands either,’ he calculated the optimal choice inwardly.
The frown eased from her face, although her cheeks were still puffed out in mock indignation. "I am letting you off the hook only this time."
She placed a pouch of golden coins on the table to cover the bill and said, "I am going to the washroom. Wait for me here."
---
"Tch, why am I feeling so annoyed?" Seraphina muttered as she slammed the door of the washroom behind her, the sound echoing off the tiled walls. She reached the wide sink with several taps placed before a wall-sized mirror.
The sound of water hitting the sink echoed as she began washing her hands, the water cool and soothing against her skin.
When she raised her head, there was a man standing behind her, the same man who had welcomed them when they entered the building. His reflection stared back at her from the mirror.
"What are you doing in a women’s bathro—" Seraphina’s words came to an abrupt halt as the man pressed her mouth with a handkerchief. The fabric was damp and carried a strange, cloying smell that filled her nostrils. A flicker of flame formed in her hand as she tried to strike the man away. The flame sputtered, flickered, and slowly died down, her eyes rolling back as the scent overwhelmed her senses. Her limbs went limp, and she crumpled to the floor.
"You shall pay for the crimes your species committed," the man muttered with heavy, ragged breath as he stared down at the unconscious figure of Seraphina, his eyes burning with hatred.
---
"What’s taking her so long?" Vlad murmured, standing in front of the glass wall, his gaze fixed on the city lights sprawling below. His both hands rested inside his pockets, the fabric of his jacket taut across his shoulders.
Suddenly, his phone began vibrating in his pocket. He took it out, the screen glowing in the dim light of the restaurant. It was Sophia’s call.
"Yes, Senior Soph—"
"Where is Lady Seraphina?" Sophia’s hurried voice came from the other side, sharp and urgent, cutting through the ambient noise.
"She has gone to the washroom," Vlad replied, his brow furrowing slightly. "Is everything alright?"
"You must bring her back this instant," Sophia said, her voice laced with terror, each word trembling with barely contained panic. "She forgot to take her medicines. It will be a disaster if she does not take them."
The moment she said those words, the dormant particles in Vlad’s crimson eyes shifted, and a translucent blue display materialised before him, hovering in the air like a ghostly projection.
