Chapter 32: Chapter 32: Shatter Point

"I don’t know yet," Elias said. "Give me one more pass."

He leaned around the edge of the quartz and watched.

Not the heads this time, but the body. He’d spent the whole fight watching the heads because the heads were trying to kill everyone. Now he made himself look past them, at the great glittering mound they grew from, and he counted.

One head struck at Aveline. Nothing happened to the body.

Two heads struck at Tobin together. The crystal of the chest shifted, a faint ripple, as if the hydra were bracing its weight.

Then three heads came down at once, all of them at Aveline’s cracked shield. Elias saw it. To throw three necks forward together, the hydra had to anchor itself. The crystal plates across its chest slid apart like petals opening, just for a second, and deep inside, something blazed: a heart of white light, cut like a prism, throwing rainbows across the whole grove.

Then the plates closed, and it was gone.

"There," he breathed. "Did you see it?"

Iris was staring at the hydra. "I saw something."

"It’s the core. The heads grow from it, and it only opens when three heads strike at once. It has to brace. One second, maybe less." He raised his voice over the chiming. "Marcus. Link her in."

"Copy," came the answer from across the grove. "Hope she doesn’t get motion sick."

Iris flinched.

Elias knew exactly what she was seeing. The orchard redrawn in thin white lines. Every crystal tree marked as cover, every fence post marked as metal, distances stamped beside them in neat white numbers. The hydra outlined in red, with seven red points along its necks and one, deep in the chest, that pulsed brighter every time a head regrew. Beside it, a new tag: CORE — EXPOSED ON TRIPLE STRIKE (≈1.0 s).

"This is how you see?" Iris whispered. "All the time?"

"Only when Marcus is out."

She looked at the fences. In the Link, every one of them glowed faintly silver now, mapped and measured. Four hundred meters of rusted iron, posts and crossbars and wire, laid out like ammunition in a rack.

"One second," she said. "You want me to put a hundred meters of iron through a one-second hole."

"Yes."

She was quiet for a moment. Then the coins around her fingers began to spin faster, and faster, until they blurred into a single silver ring.

"Okay," Iris said. "I can do that."

Iris stood up from behind the boulder and raised both hands.

The orchard groaned.

All down the valley, the old fences tore themselves out of the earth. Posts ripped free with clods of soil still clinging to them. Crossbars snapped off their bolts. Coils of barbed wire unspooled into the air like silver snakes. Everything rose, a hundred meters of rusted iron lifting off the ground at once, and then it began to turn.

It spun above the crystal trees in a great slow ring, then faster, the posts and bars and wire twisting together, grinding, sharpening, until the whole mass had become a single storm of spikes circling the sky above the hydra. The air hummed. Every loose bolt on Marcus’s rifle rattled. Iris stood at the center of it all with her braid whipping in the wind she’d made, both arms raised, blood running down her temple, her face perfectly calm.

The hydra noticed.

All seven heads swung away from Aveline and Tobin and turned toward the woman holding a storm of iron over its back. It knew a threat when it saw one.

Three heads drew back together.

"Elias," Marcus said quietly over the Link. "They’re going for her."

"I know."

That was the plan. He just hadn’t told Iris that part.

The three heads came down at once, glass necks whistling through the air, straight at Iris. She couldn’t dodge. She couldn’t move her hands without dropping the storm. She looked at the heads coming, and Elias saw her realize it, and saw her decide to hold the iron anyway.

He was already moving.

Quick Step threw him out from behind the boulder, across five meters of shattered glass, and he planted himself in front of Iris with his arms crossed over his head.

All three heads hit him.

It was like being hit by a building. The ground cratered under his boots. His forearms screamed. Something cracked in his shoulder, and for a white, ringing instant, he couldn’t feel anything at all.

[Oathbearer (Echo) activated.]

The pain turned in his chest, iron in a forge, and came out as fire in his legs. And the rest of it, the part his body couldn’t hold, tore out of him along Aveline’s oath and slammed into her across the grove. He felt her take it. He felt her blaze.

The hydra’s chest opened.

The crystal plates slid apart, and the prism heart blazed out, white and furious, in the center of the Link’s crosshairs.

"Now!"

Iris brought her hands down.

The storm came out of the sky like the fist of a god. A hundred meters of iron poured down through that one-second gap in a single twisting spear, posts and bars and wire all driven by her will, and punched straight through the open chest into the core.

The core shattered.

For a moment, the hydra froze, all seven heads raised and motionless, the iron spear standing out of its chest like a stake through a heart. Then light poured out of every crack in its body at once, and the whole creature came apart, every head and neck and glittering plate dissolving into a cloud of crystal dust that hung in the green air and slowly drifted down like snow.

The orchard went silent. Even the trees stopped chiming.

Elias sat down hard in the glitter. His shoulder throbbed. Across the grove, Aveline lowered her ruined shield, still glowing faintly white. Tobin was brushing glass out of his beard. Marcus stood up from behind his crystal tree and slung his rifle.

Iris walked over and looked down at him. She was covered in crystal dust from head to toe, sparkling like she’d been dipped in sugar.

"You used me as bait," she said.

"Yes."

"You didn’t tell me."

"You’d have said no."

She stared at him a moment longer. Then she held out her hand, and after a second, he took it, and she hauled him to his feet.

"Answers," she said. "All of them."

"Outside," Elias said. "Gate’s about to fold."

The windows came as they walked toward the exit.

[Boss defeated: Crystal Hydra.]

[Level up: 11 → 12.]

[Gate collapse in 5:00.]

And under that, a line he’d been ignoring for a week: [Unallocated points: 35.]

He’d been banking them since level 6, too exhausted to think about anything but the next gate. He thought about it now: about bracing under three glass heads with nothing but his arms, about every time he’d had to lean on someone else’s strength because he didn’t have enough of his own.

Twelve into Strength. Eight into Agility. Eight into Perception. Four into Vitality. Three into Intelligence.

He felt it settle into his muscles as he walked, a solid, quiet weight, like armor he couldn’t see. Then he opened the full window for the first time in weeks.
