SSS Awakening: Rise Of The Soul Sovereign!
Chapter 55: Great Misfortune!
Now Aiden knew. She hadn’t been weak. She had simply been born with a power that demanded an unbearable price.
And then another piece of the puzzle fell into place.
’Black Fang Gang’ Aiden’s gaze briefly shifted toward the three hooligans surrounding Luna. He finally understood why he had never heard of them in his previous life.
They had probably encountered Luna exactly as they had now. They had discovered her class, realized that she could manipulate fortune and misfortune, and decided to treat her like a walking good-luck charm.
They had forced her to roll. Again and again. Every time she produced good fortune, they benefited. Every time she produced misfortune, they blamed her.
And eventually, they had pushed her too far.
Aiden’s eyes settled on the crimson die. ’Heavenly Karmic Dice.’
An SS-rank class capable of manipulating fortune and misfortune itself. But what made the class truly terrifying wasn’t simply the ability to bring good or bad luck.
It was the fact that once the dice determined one’s fortune... the effect didn’t simply vanish because its caster was gone.
Aiden’s expression darkened. He could almost reconstruct what had happened in his previous life.
Luna had rolled Great Misfortune. The backlash had ravaged her body, leaving her barely capable of standing. And the Black Fang Gang, instead of stopping, had continued tormenting her. Perhaps they had even believed killing her would put an end to everything.
They were wrong. Luna died first. Her life aura eventually flickered out beneath the accumulated backlash and whatever violence these bastards had inflicted upon her.
But the Great Misfortune remained. Its duration had not yet ended. The dice had already decided their fate with their weak strength they stood no chance. And so, after Luna’s death, the misfortune continued to follow them.
One disaster. Then another. An accident. A failed escape. A fatal encounter. Until, one by one, the Black Fang Gang was wiped out.
Aiden’s eyes narrowed. ’That explains their complete disappearance. They hadn’t simply vanished during the chaos of the apocalypse. They had killed the wrong person.
They had murdered Luna Everhart... only to spend the remaining duration of her Great Misfortune being crushed beneath the very fate they had forced upon themselves.’
Aiden almost found the irony cruelly fitting. Luna had died. The Black Fang Gang had survived her by mere minutes, perhaps hours.
But their deaths had already been decided. They just hadn’t known it yet.
And now, standing in this ruined church and looking at the frail girl before him, Aiden understood something even more important.
In his previous life, Luna had died here. The Black Fang Gang had died afterward. And nobody had ever known why.
Nobody had known that an SS-rank powerhouse had been murdered by a group of insignificant Level 2 and Level 3 players. Nobody had known that those same players had later been annihilated by the lingering misfortune of the girl they had killed.
Nobody had known the truth. But Aiden did. And this time.. He wasn’t going to let history repeat itself, she’ll prove to be an important ally so he had to save her no matter what...
He watched as one of the yellow-haired hooligans suddenly stepped forward.
"Little brat." His voice was impatient. He nudged the crimson die with the toe of his boot. It rolled across the dusty floor before wobbling to a stop. "What are you playing dead for?"
The girl didn’t respond. Her body merely trembled.
The yellow-haired hooligan clicked his tongue. "Hurry up and roll that die for us brothers again!" He crouched down, grinning. "Wasn’t that Small luck from just now pretty effective?" He pointed proudly at himself. "I went outside afterward and actually found a piece of Common equipment!"
His grin widened. "See? Your class isn’t useless after all."
The girl remained silent. Her fingers tightened around her knees.
The yellow-haired man immediately became irritated. "Can’t you hear me?!" He reached forward and grabbed one of the dice.
The moment his fingers touched it, a faint sensation of cold crawled up his arm. He instinctively released it. His expression changed for a moment. Then embarrassment replaced the fear. "What’s with this stupid thing?" He kicked it instead.
Another hooligan, a bald man with a scar running from his temple to his jaw, laughed. "That’s right."
He pointed his weapon toward the girl. "Roll some good luck and we’ll count it as a contribution." His smile disappeared. "But if you dare roll that scary ghost symbol again..."
He glanced toward the shattered stone pillar several meters away. A large section of it had collapsed onto the floor. The rubble was still fresh. "...then don’t blame us if you get hurt."
A nervous twitch crossed his face. That falling pillar had nearly crushed him. He hadn’t forgotten it. And apparently, neither had she.
"You saw what happened last time, didn’t you?" he continued. "One bad roll almost killed me." He jabbed a finger toward her. "So don’t try anything funny."
The third man was the smallest of the three. His face was thin and rat-like, with restless eyes that constantly darted around. Unlike the other two, however, his gaze wasn’t fixed on the dice. It remained on the girl. A disgusting grin slowly spread across his face.
"Boss." He glanced toward the yellow-haired man. "Why waste words with her?" He took a step closer. "I think she won’t shed tears until we show her."
The yellow-haired man frowned. "What are you talking about?"
The rat-faced man chuckled. "I’m saying..." His eyes swept over her frail sexy figure. "...maybe we should have some fun first."
The other two exchanged glances. Neither stopped him.
The rat-faced man crouched down. "Look at how tender she is." His hand slowly reached toward her shoulder.
She immediately recoiled. Her back pressed harder against the wall. "No..."
The word was so faint that it almost disappeared beneath the sound of the wind outside.
The man’s grin widened. "What was that?" He leaned closer. "I didn’t hear you."
Her breathing became faster. "No..."
This time, the word carried a little more desperation. But there was no strength behind it. She couldn’t even stand.
The backlash of Great Misfortune was ravaging her from the inside. Every second that passed was another second her vitality was being consumed. Her muscles felt impossibly heavy. Her mind was drowning beneath an oppressive fog. Even keeping her eyes open had become an exhausting task.
