Chapter 478: The Death of The Elephantos
Chapter 478: The Death of The Elephantos
[You have killed the Level 53 B-Rank Elephantos]
[You have gained 6,500 Lives]
[You have levelled up!]
Moon stared at the notification, satisfaction flashing across his eyes.
The best source of lives after killing humans was Body Refining beasts. Their dense physical conditioning translated into massive life pools, and creatures like the Elephantos sat at the top of that category.
’It’s higher than killing S-Rank creatures in the First Sanctuary.’ Moon thought, running the numbers. ’It’s terrifying how much value S-Rank creatures actually carry. If a Body Refiner of the Fourth Star rank gives this, I wonder what an S-Rank body Refiner Would bring...’
He filed the thought away and turned his attention back to the arena.
High above, Klein watched the dead beast and the two young mages standing over it. A faint smile remained on his face as he tapped his communication device.
’Switch the cameras. Resume normal coverage.’
The screens across the kingdom shifted away from the starting site, returning to show the chaos unfolding across the rest of the zone. Other fights, other races, other eliminations.
"No! Bring them back!"
"Show us our dark horse!"
"Why did you switch cameras?! The fight was one of the highlights of the day!"
In one section of the stands, a group of young men were already attempting to chant.
"Moon! Moon! Moon!"
A small group joined in, then another, the chant building into a wave that rolled through a portion of the spectator section.
"Sel-ene! Sel-ene! Sel-ene!" Another group of girls started up across the arena, refusing to let her be overshadowed.
The two names competed for dominance across the stands, neither winning entirely, both gaining traction with each passing minute.
Back at the starting site, the sound of clapping reached Moon and Selene.
They turned to see Klein descending from the air, his green eyes sparkling with approval. He landed in front of them, his hands continuing to clap as he stopped a few meters away.
"Splendid! Fabulous fight." Klein smiled at both of them. "You two have entertained us all. Your teamwork is exceptional. I’ve rarely seen synergy of that quality, especially from competitors so newly evolved."
Selene dipped her head politely. "Thank you, sir."
Moon nodded once, then his gaze drifted to the massive corpse of the Elephantos cooling in the center of the site. "About the beast. Are we free to claim it as part of our reward?"
Klein shook his head. "I’m afraid not. The Elephantos is part of the tournament’s prepared assets. While you killed it, it still belongs to the Association. Its parts will be used to craft Second Order weapons that we’ll either sell or distribute to our own personnel."
Moon nodded without complaint. He hadn’t expected otherwise, but it had been worth asking.
Elsewhere in the zone, Kael Glassy paused mid-step and glanced at his watch.
He had been moving toward his assigned section, pacing himself, picking off weaker competitors when opportunities arose. His current point total sat at a respectable fourty-eight, putting him in the upper portion of the leaderboard.
But something had just changed on the display.
The top two spots had been completely overwritten.
The previous first and second place who Kael had been tracking carefully, were no longer at the top.
They had been pushed down to third and fourth. The new first and second positions belonged to anonymous candidates whose names were obscured by the system, the way all candidate names were.
What caught Kael’s attention wasn’t the change. It was the numbers.
Leaderboard Ranking
- - - - - - - - -
1st Place: 500 Points
2nd Place: 500 Points
They both sat at five hundred points.
Kael’s eyes narrowed.
The third and fourth place competitors held points consistent with what the previous top two had been sitting at. Around seventy. Which meant the new top two hadn’t accumulated their points the same way everyone else had. They hadn’t won them through dozens of small wins, section captures, and eliminations.
They had earned them in a single event.
A perfect five hundred each. A clean split.
"Two people having the same points..." Kael muttered. He looked up at the sky, "They killed the fourth star beast that’s worth a thousand points."
He glanced toward the distant starting site, where he had a strong suspicion the source of those numbers was located.
Klein looked at Moon, then voiced the question that had been sitting on his mind since the moment Moon had remained behind.
"How did you know?"
"Know what?" Moon returned the question with one of his own, his expression mildly curious, as if he had no idea what the Ascender was referring to.
A smile formed on Klein’s face. The sort of expression that knew exactly what was being attempted and wasn’t falling for it.
"You know what I’m talking about, young man. How did you know that the Fourth Star beast would arrive here?"
"A hunch." Moon replied calmly.
"Just a hunch?" Klein’s smile widened. "I don’t believe that."
Moon held his gaze for a moment, weighing how much to share. Then he gestured subtly toward the Surpasser standing at the edge of the site.
"That Surpasser. When the entire team of Evolvers and Surpassers scattered to follow the competitors into the zone, he stayed behind. His posture was relaxed, his focus fixed on remaining at this exact location." Moon paused.
"Nobody was going to be here. If a high-level Surpasser was assigned to stay at an empty starting site, then there had to be something important coming to this spot."
He glanced at the dead Elephantos.
"From there, it was just a matter of guessing what. A Fourth Star beast made the most sense. Bringing it anywhere else in the zone would have caused chaos and made the reward too easy to stumble upon by accident. The starting site was the only place safe enough to deliver it. That’s it."
Klein raised an eyebrow.
"That’s some sharp observation." He studied Moon for a moment longer, his green eyes thoughtful. "Although I still don’t believe that’s the only reason. But I won’t pressure you. Everyone has their own secrets."
Moon offered a small smile but said nothing further.
