Chapter 374 Hunting With Frey
Chapter 374 Hunting With Frey
They reached the edge of the Flying Thorns Forest within twenty minutes. The tree trunks were thick, girthy and packed tightly together. Above their heads, the trees canopies were intertwined, protecting themselves from the strong floating island winds.
The wind that had been battering them across the open ground had also died down considerably once they stepped beneath the cover of the trees. “Stay on the main paths for now.” Frey said, his voice lower than before. “The thorn plants grow near the water sources deeper in. As long as we stick to the dry ground, we won’t trigger them.” They moved deeper into the forest in silence. It didn’t take long for the first beast to appear.
A low growl rumbled from behind a cluster of thick roots to their left. A pair of yellow eyes blinked open in the shadows, watching them.
“A Level 27 beast.” Frey said quietly, stopping in his tracks. “They hunt alone in this part of the forest.” He stepped back and gestured toward it. “All yours.”
Moon was already channeling. The fire element began to form in his staff as he locked onto his acupoint, weaving the thread between his skill and the foundation once more.
The beast lunged from the shadows. It was the size of an adult dog, and looked like a tiger. Its claws were sharp, and its whiskers were long enough to reach its chin.
Moon sidestepped its claws and drove an earth spike through its exposed flank in a single motion. Before the beast could recover Moon sent the fireball he had conjured hurling towards it.
[You have killed the Level 28 0-Star Lyrax] [You have gained 50 Lives] Frey clapped his hands together lightly. “Well done. You executed that combo beautifully. Clean and efficient.”
Moon nodded. “Thanks.”
“So, what do you think about the staff? Feeling the difference?”
“It’s noticeable.” Moon said. “The casting speed is smoother, and the elemental output feels a touch sharper than before. Your inscription complements it well.”
Frey’s smile widened. There was pride in his expression, the kind that belonged to a craftsman hearing his work appreciated. “That’s what I like to hear. A good weapon deserves a good enhancement.”
He turned back toward the forest path and gestured forward.
“Let’s keep going. There’s plenty more where that came from.”
Moon stored the beast’s body in his storage ring and followed. The two of them pushed deeper into the Flying Thorns Forest.
The two of them continued to hunt for the next two hours. They killed close to around twenty beasts with levels that ranged from 26 to 29 between them, working their way deeper into the forest at a steady pace.
With every kill, Moon felt the threads inside his acupoint solidifying further. What had started as fragile, wispy connections between his skill and the foundation when he first started was now akin to a robust rope.
Moon had also forced Frey into fighting by putting him into various issues. The Runesmith wasn’t just a craftsman who hid behind others, in fact, he held his own pretty well against the beasts.
Frey fought with a sound reasoning, and tactical ability that impressed Moon despite his agenda of stalking Moon.
He would lay defensive runes in advance, creating barriers that absorbed incoming attacks while he repositioned. His offensive runes detonated with sharp, concentrated force, targeting weak points he identified mid-combat. When a beast got too close, he had evasion runes prepared on his boots that launched him sideways in quick bursts.
His attacks were powerful, defense was solid and evasion was precise.
But there was one glaring issue. Once Frey’s runes ran out, or his mana depleted, Frey had nothing left.
He wasn’t a real physical warrior or a mage, he had no options, or fallback. He would be a sitting duck waiting to be slaughtered.
‘The next step is to cultivate the skill into the acupoint. Once I do that, my first acupoint foundation will be complete.’ Moon thought. ‘From what I’ve been hearing, my power will surge once that happens.’
He glanced at Frey walking just ahead of him to store a beast corpse he had killed.
‘But before that, there are still some things I need to take care of.’
Moon glanced at his status screen. He was more than half way through the next level up threshold, which would grant him 5 allocatable attribute points.

After reading through it for a brief moment, Moon closed his status screen, and caught up with Frey.
“Hey, I think that’s enough hunting for the day. Let’s head back toward the base before the night settles in.” Frey said, his eyes peering through the gaps in the canopy at the darkening sky above.
Moon remained silent for a moment. He was close to leveling up, more than half way through the threshold. After a few hours of hunting some powerful beasts, he would cross the threshold.
“Wait. I need a few more kills to level up. Let’s stay a little while longer, then head back.”
Frey didn’t respond immediately. He stared at the sky for a long moment, his jaw working slightly as he weighed the request. The forest was already growing darker around them, the shadows between the trees stretching longer with each passing minute.
After a long pause, he shook his head. His eyes were firmer than before.
“Let’s head back. We can kill beasts on the way. We’ll likely encounter some along the route.”
Moon studied his expression. The man wasn’t being difficult but he was being very cautious, whether that caution was because of Moon or the beasts dwelling there.
“That works.” Moon nodded. “As long as we encounter some.”
The two of them turned back toward the path they had come from and began retracing their steps through the dimming forest.
