Chapter 683 - 608: Bailing Someone Out
Chapter 683: Chapter 608: Bailing Someone Out
Fuli Police Station, South District.
Inside the office, a coal stove burned with a whoosh, filling the room with steam and heat.
"Dr. Chen, my back hurts. It’s been hurting for several years."
A police officer turned around, lifted up layers of sweaters, and pointed to his lower back.
Chen Yu maintained his smile as he felt the area with his hands. Then he said, "The disc between your second and third lumbar vertebrae shows signs of herniation. You need to be careful with it from now on. A full herniation would be very troublesome."
"Buy this brand of medicinal plaster and apply it regularly. I’ll also teach you a few stretches for your back muscles. Practice them often to improve your back muscle support, and the pain should ease up."
With that, Chen Yu stood up and guided the officer through a couple of stretching exercises.
His disc was already bulging and pressing on a nerve. In this situation, Chen Yu didn’t bother mentioning anything like surgery.
There probably weren’t any hospitals in China performing arthroscopic annulus fibrosus repair surgery yet.
And even if there were, the results wouldn’t be as good as if he performed the surgery himself.
So, conservative treatment was the only option.
"That’s everyone," Director Zhang Daming, who was standing beside them, said after a glance outside. He quickly refilled the water for Chen Yu and the others, then said with a wide smile, "Dr. Chen, we’ve really troubled you."
Chen Yu was here this time to get someone out of custody.
Zhang Daming knew of Chen Yu. He said that he’d watched the Olympics, and the hosts were always mentioning Chen Yu back then. Later, several shows on the sports channel had also done special features on him.
He knew Chen Yu was a world-class orthopedic surgeon. During a casual chat, he had nonchalantly asked about his own aching leg, not expecting that Chen Yu would actually examine it on the spot, diagnose it as rheumatism, and write a prescription right then and there.
He’d written a prescription for Western medicine and one for traditional Chinese medicine as well.
Then, Chen Yu had proactively offered to give all the officers at the station a check-up and diagnosis.
While Zhang Daming said, "Oh, how could we impose," with a wave of his hand, the station’s political instructor had called over every officer on duty.
"Dr. Chen, you’re truly amazing."
The slightly gaunt political instructor, Zhou Qinghong, pushed the dish of dried fruits toward Chen Yu again, inviting Hunter and the others to have some. Then he said, "Ma Qingshan’s leg has been hurting for years. He’s been to the hospital several times, but they could never figure out what was wrong. His wife puts medicinal plasters on it for him every day, but they never helped."
"But you just took one feel and could tell it was degenerative osteoarthritis. You’re just incredible."
Zhang Daming immediately picked up the thread, "Old Zhou, what are you saying? This man is a world-class miracle doctor. Of course he’s incredible."
Chen Yu waved his hand dismissively. It was a simple matter of a glance, hardly any effort at all. "So, about Song Jun?"
’I’ve seen the patients. Time to get down to business, right?’
Zhang Daming didn’t waste any time and immediately had someone bring Song Jun over.
"Dr. Chen, this kid is a regular here," Zhang Daming asked curiously. "You want him to play basketball, but he hasn’t played in years. Is he still any good?"
A world-famous miracle doctor, the man who had trained Liu Xiang into a world champion, had come all this way just for a petty hoodlum. It felt like a dream to him.
Chen Yu said, "He should be fine. He’s in great physical condition. With proper training, he has potential."
Zhang Daming nodded in deep agreement. His officers who went out on missions had told him that this Song Jun kid was the hardest to catch; it took several of them to pin him down.
Just as they were speaking, Song Jun was hauled over.
He curiously sized up Chen Yu and Hunter.
The well-dressed Chen Yu seemed out of place, and there were foreigners, too.
"Song Jun!"
Zhang Daming barked.
Song Jun defiantly turned his head away, a look of indifference on his face.
"You little punk!"
Zhang Daming’s eyebrows shot up and he was about to lose his temper, but seeing Chen Yu, he suppressed his anger. "Song Jun, you’re a lucky brat. Someone’s here to bail you out. We’ll let it slide this time. Stay out of trouble, play basketball well, and maybe win a gold medal or something to make your mom proud."
Song Jun froze for a moment. He wasn’t stupid. He immediately looked at Chen Yu, guessing that he was the reason he was being released.
"Who the hell are you?"
he demanded, his tone aggressive.
Chen Yu just smiled. ’The kid’s got quite a temper.’
"Director Zhang, we’ll take him off your hands now. We’ll be heading out," Chen Yu said, ignoring Song Jun and turning to say goodbye to Zhang Daming.
Amid the chorus of thanks from Zhang Daming and the others, Chen Yu’s group was seen out of the police station.
As they were making their final goodbyes, Song Jun saw that no one was paying attention to him, ducked his head, and bolted.
"Hey, that kid! Stop!"
Zhang Daming’s eyes widened, and the officers on either side of him were about to dash out.
"Forget it."
Chen Yu raised a hand to stop them. He glanced at Song Jun, who was already far away but kept looking back. "It’s fine. Let him go."
Zhang Daming asked, puzzled, "Dr. Chen, didn’t you want him for basketball? What are you going to do now that he’s run off?"
Chen Yu retracted his gaze and smiled. "The monk can run, but the temple can’t. Don’t worry, I have a plan."
After leaving the police station, Chen Yu didn’t rush back to the hotel. He found a supermarket in the city, bought some gifts, and headed straight for Song Jun’s home.
During the day that Song Jun was detained at the station, Chen Yu had contacted the local community office to get a more detailed and in-depth understanding of Song Jun’s situation.
If he wanted to make this kid change his mind, he would really need to plan his approach carefully.
Drawing curious glances from passersby, the group made their way through a narrow alley.
This area was filled with low, single-story houses and lacked a municipal sewage system. Dirty water mixed with melted snow, making every step a potential plunge.
Chen Yu didn’t mind. To be honest, it was similar to some of the rougher neighborhoods in the United States, except those were even more dangerous—a gunman could pop out of the shadows at any moment.
After asking for directions along the way, Chen Yu finally found Song Jun’s home.
It was a small courtyard with a gate facing the alley.
It was called a courtyard, but it was pitifully small, and the main house was dark and squat.
The courtyard gate was ajar. Chen Yu knocked, and a few coughs came from inside, followed by a voice asking if Song Jun was back.
Chen Yu entered the main house. The dim room had no windows. With the sky already darkening outside, it was practically pitch-black inside.
There was just one inner room, its doorway sealed tight by a thick curtain. As he pulled it open, a sour, foul smell washed over him.
A bone-chilling cold filled the air. The coal stove wasn’t lit, nor was the kang heated.
The honeycomb briquettes in the corner of the yard were covered in snow, looking like they hadn’t been used in two days.
"Hello, Sister Tian."
Chen Yu pulled back the curtain to the inner room and saw Song Jun’s mother, Tian Fengxi.
She was lying on the kang, covered with a thick quilt, and was propping herself up to look at Chen Yu.
Only thirty-seven years old, she was so weathered by hardship that she looked like she was fifty.
"You are...?"
Song Jun’s mother looked doubtfully at Chen Yu, and then at the two foreigners behind him.
"My name is Chen Yu. I’m here to see Song Jun." Chen Yu glanced around, saw no chairs, and sat down on the edge of the bed.
The moment she heard he was looking for Song Jun, Tian Fengxi’s expression changed. Her voice trembled, "Did Song Jun get into trouble outside? If he did, I’ll kowtow and apologize to you."
As she spoke, she struggled to get up.
Chen Yu quickly stopped her. "Sister Tian, Song Jun isn’t in any trouble. He’s fine. By the way, what’s wrong with your health? Is it difficult for you to move?"
Chen Yu’s gaze swept over Tian Fengxi’s legs.
Her feet were swollen.
He immediately noticed the worm-like veins on her calves.
She had a bad case of varicose veins.
Varicose veins in the lower limbs can cause swollen feet and difficulty with movement.
"Song Jun really isn’t in trouble?" Tian Fengxi’s focus was clearly still on her son.
Chen Yu nodded. Just then, his gaze swept over Tian Fengxi’s abdomen and chest, and he suddenly frowned.
At the same time, the sound of the courtyard gate being pushed open came from outside.
"Mom, I’m back! I bought you some pig’s head meat. It’s still warm," Song Jun’s voice called out.
The next moment, Song Jun lifted the door curtain and saw Chen Yu and the others in the room. His face changed instantly.
