Spider-Man : The Story of a Hero
Chapter 76: Being There for Each Other
He then told her everything that had happened on his side after leaving the laboratory following his confrontation with Eddie. Silver Sable's trap. His kidnapping. His encounters with old enemies and his meeting with new ones. Tombstone. His identity being exposed. His execution. Then his bond with the symbiote. He told her about his growing concern for Gwen and his aunt, about the violence that had gradually taken up more and more space inside him, about the people he and the symbiote had killed, and then about the creature's transformation. He also told her about discovering the Connors' notes on the symbiote, his first doubts, the anger he felt toward everyone until the moment he finally realized something was wrong. Then came the symbiote's manipulation, the memories of Uncle Ben, that final battle inside his own mind… and finally, his victory.
After learning all of this, Gwen couldn't believe it. For several dozen seconds, neither of them said a single word. She seemed lost in deep thought while Peter, slightly uncomfortable with the silence, waited for some kind of reaction from her. A word. A question. Anything. But nothing came. Eventually, he spoke again, his voice almost guilty:
— "I… I'm sorry you had to find out about all of this this way. I know it's a lot to take in…"
Several more long seconds passed without Gwen answering. She kept her gaze lowered, absorbed in her thoughts. Then, after that long silence, she finally said his name in a calm voice:
— "Peter…"
— "Yes, Gwen…?" he replied in a soft, calm voice.
— "If I told you I'm glad the man who killed my father is dead… would that make me a bad person…?"
Even though Gwen avoided his gaze, Peter immediately understood what was happening. Despite everything she had shown since George's death, despite all the smiles she had used to try to hide her pain… deep down, knowing that the man responsible for her father's death had paid for what he had done brought her a certain sense of relief. But that feeling was now mixed with something else: doubt… and above all, deep guilt.
— "I… I don't know if I have the right to be glad… I don't know if it's okay to feel this way… and I don't know what my father would think…"
A few tears slowly began to run down her cheeks. Gwen tried to hold them back, but couldn't. Her voice trembled slightly, and her breathing, now uneven, betrayed all the emotions she was still trying to contain.
— "Gwen… having thoughts like that doesn't make you a bad person. If anything… you're already a much better person than I am."
His expression darkened slightly as memories of all the people who had died because of him… and the symbiote came rushing back. But he quickly pushed those thoughts aside and focused on Gwen again.
— "You lost someone you loved, and anyone… and I mean anyone, could feel relieved knowing the person responsible paid for what he did. It's human. And if you're asking me what your father would think if he could see you right now… I'm sure he'd tell you not to spend the rest of your life dwelling on all of this. He'd tell you to move forward. To live your life to the fullest and keep smiling! Not crying! After all…"
Suddenly, a gentle, almost childlike and deeply reassuring smile appeared on his face.
He said:
— "A Stacy always stays positive, right?"
Those few words sent a powerful wave of nostalgia through Gwen. A painful warmth that brought back everything she had been through since childhood. Every hardship she had faced. The loss of her mother, the bullying, the struggles of everyday life… and then, finally, the loss of her father. Despite all of it, she had always managed to get back up. To keep moving forward. To stay positive.
Faced with all those memories, Gwen could no longer hold back her tears. They began streaming freely down her cheeks. And yet, she barely sobbed. She didn't scream or make almost any sound at all. It was as if her body were crying for her, silently releasing everything she had kept bottled up until now.
— "Thank you, Peter… thank you…"
She threw herself into his arms once again, this time with such force that Peter was slightly caught off guard. But relieved to see that this conversation was going far better than he had imagined, he gently wrapped his arms around her. Then, almost naturally, the two of them slowly let themselves fall back onto Gwen's bed.
Now lying in each other's arms, they remained there, motionless, without saying a word. The minutes passed slowly, almost feeling like an eternity to them.
After everything they had just been through, the silence felt good. A moment of peace, safety, and tenderness that they wished they could hold on to forever.
Then, nestled against him, Gwen finally broke the silence in a soft, quiet voice:
— "I'm… so glad you're okay. I don't want to lose you too…"
— "That won't happen, Gwen. I promise."
At those words, Gwen tightened her embrace around him even more, a gesture Peter immediately felt.
— "I love you, Peter."
— "I love you too, Gwen."
Still nestled against each other, their eyes met in the midst of the gentle silence. His eyes tired, Peter tenderly ran a hand through Gwen's hair. She moved even closer to him, closing the few inches between them as though she simply wanted to feel the presence of the person she loved against her as much as possible.
Peter continued gently stroking her hair without saying anything else. He simply wanted to soothe her, to help her relax after everything she had just let out… and through those small gestures, give her all the affection he could.
