Chapter 514: Let There Be Doom (2)
Chapter 514: Chapter 514: Let There Be Doom (2)
[Third Person Pov]
Doom raised the stolen hammer high into the vaulted ceiling of his castle hall, the green-and-silver armor of Latveria’s sovereign gleaming under the sudden flare of arcane energy. The moment Mjolnir’s head pointed skyward, the air itself rebelled.
Clouds bloomed from nothing, thick and bruised purple, boiling into existence beneath the ornate stone arches of his prestigious castle. The temperature plummeted. Shadows lengthened. What had been a grand, torch-lit chamber became a night sky trapped indoors, the vaulted roof vanishing behind rolling thunderheads that scraped the chandeliers and sent tapestries whipping like battle flags.
"Holy shit!" Johnny shouted.
Rain fell in sheets, cold and heavy, slamming into the marble floor with the force of a monsoon. The flames wreathing the Human Torch hissed and died in an instant. Johnny hit the ground face-first with a wet, undignified splat that drove the air from his lungs. He groaned, steam still rising from his shoulders and the back of his head in thin, defeated ribbons. Embers flickered once across his skin—hopeful, stubborn—then snuffed out with a final, pathetic *pop*.
"Flame on!" he tried again, voice cracking. Nothing. Just more rain, more steam, more frustration.
Above them the indoor hurricane gathered strength. Thunder cracked so loud the stained-glass windows of distant corridors shivered in their frames. White-blue flashes lit the hall like strobe lights in a nightmare. Wind howled through the chamber, strong enough to tear banners from their poles and send loose papers and shattered debris spinning in chaotic circles.
"Ahhh—!" Thor’s boots skidded across the floor. The fierce winds shoved him backward. Before he could dig in with his remaining strength, Mary Jane’s web-shot snapped around his ankles and anchored him hard to the marble. The webbing stretched taut, vibrating under the pressure, but it held—just barely—keeping the God of Thunder from being launched into the swirling dark.
Reed’s elongated body was less fortunate. The wind caught him like a kite. He cried out as his torso stretched and whipped upward, arms flailing. With a desperate stretch he locked one elongated hand around Ben Grimm’s massive shoulder. The Thing braced himself, rocky feet grinding deep grooves into the floor as he planted himself like a living bunker, absorbing the pull of his friend’s elastic form.
Nearby, the Hulk roared and dug in as well. Bare green feet smashed into the stone, leaving perfect, cratered imprints the size of manhole covers. Muscles corded. Shoulders hunched. He became an immovable object against an increasingly immovable force.
"Doom answers to no one but himself," he declared, voice amplified by the storm itself. He swung Mjolnir downward in a single, contemptuous arc. Stray bolts of lightning answered the call, raining from the artificial clouds in lethal, forking spears. They struck the floor with the force of orbital strikes, blasting black, smoking craters across the marble. The air filled with the sharp scent of ozone and scorched stone.
"Doom takes what he pleases, whenever it pleases him and conveniences him. I do not require permission to possess the power of gods—or to unmake those who would deny me. For if it is the will of Doom who dares to defy it"
The railgun clutched in Aria’s hands took a direct hit. The weapon detonated in a white-hot blossom of metal and energy. She phased intangible a heartbeat before the blast could claim her, the explosion passing harmlessly through her spectral form—but the loss of the weapon still tore a raw cry from her throat.
"Nooo!"
The chamber became a war zone of secondary explosions and energy blasts as the remaining Doombots pressed their attack, metallic voices barking in cold, synchronized unison.
1Psionic spider-legs erupted from Mary Jane’s back in a sudden, crystalline shimmer, each limb tipped with razor precision. She drove them into a Doombot’s energy shield, the legs cracking and fracturing the barrier until she could spear the machine’s core.
Felicia moved like liquid shadow through the chaos, dodging beam after beam, lightning bolt after lightning bolt. Her white-black suit was already soaked and streaked with soot. Her gaze flicked across the battlefield, locking for a moment on Peter—still locked inside the shimmering Zero-Point field, suspended and unmoving—then settled on Thor.
A fresh bolt of lightning slammed into the floor beside the Asgardian. The impact shredded the webbing anchoring him and sent Thor tumbling. His discarded shield clattered across the wet stone and came to rest near his hand.
Felicia’s eyes narrowed. A tiny, almost casual gesture of her fingers adjusted probability itself. A Doombot that had been lining up a killing shot on the fallen Thor suddenly found its aim interrupted by a bolt of pure lightning that sheared the machine in half from crown to chassis.
"Thor!" Felicia shouted over the roaring wind and continuous thunder. "Let me borrow your shield for a second—I promise I’ll return it!"
Thor didn’t hesitate. He snatched the shield and hurled it underhand. Felicia webbed it mid-flight, flipped it once in her hands, and pressed a quick, almost affectionate kiss at its center.
"Help out mama, will you?"
She tossed the shield into a random direction in the distance.
What followed was pure, beautiful chaos.
The vibranium disc struck the energy barrier of a Doombot and bounced right off of it. It passed harmlessly through Aria’s intangible form, caromed off a stone pillar with a ringing *clang*, then caught the edge of an explosion triggered by Lizzy’s latest energy blast. The shield was flung higher, spinning end over end, only to be struck midair by one of Nightwing’s escrima sticks. The impact altered its trajectory again.
For a single, impossible second the shield hung suspended, rotating in place like a coin toss.
A stray bolt of lightning found it at the perfect angle.
The energy struck the curved surface, reflected with surgical precision, and lanced directly into the Zero-Point field imprisoning Peter. The containment shattered in a cascade of fractured light. Peter dropped free, landing in a perfect three-point crouch on the rain-slicked floor as the shield itself reverse-bounded across the chamber and came to rest, wobbling, at Thor’s boots.
Peter looked up, rain streaming down his mask, and gave a single, grateful nod toward Felicia.
Meanwhile Gwen had been weaving her own defense. Bolts of ice magic left her fingertips in rapid succession, constructing translucent barriers and jagged spires that rose like frozen architecture around her. Her spider-sense screamed a half-second before the danger arrived. She looked up.
A concentrated bolt of pure lightning was falling straight toward her from the heart of the indoor storm.
Gwen raised two fingers. A tiny sphere of absolute zero formed above them. She thrust upward.
The bolt met the sphere at the tip of her fingers. The impact should have been fatal. Instead the lightning froze solid in midair, locked inside a shell of crystalline ice. The freezing force raced upward along the bolt’s path, climbing the energy itself, and plunged into the supercharged cloud above.
Within heartbeats the entire storm was flash-frozen.
Lightning bolts that had been mid-strike became a forest of glittering, suspended arcs. Rain hung as glittering beads. Wind died into sudden, eerie stillness. The clouds themselves turned into a vast, silent sculpture of frozen fury hanging motionless beneath the castle roof.
Johnny Storm brushed soaked, matted hair from his face and stared upward, mouth slightly open.
"That," he said, voice quiet with genuine awe, "is honestly insane."
Peter took a single step forward.
The marble beneath his boot immediately glowed cherry-red, then white-hot. Stone liquefied in a perfect circle around his foot, bubbling and hissing as the heat climbed his leg in visible waves. In the next heartbeat the rest of his body followed—flesh, suit, and bone collapsing inward into a single, brilliant bolt of pure white-blue lightning. The transformation was instantaneous and violent. The air cracked. The floor cratered. And Spider-Man was gone, replaced by a living arc of electricity that tore across the ruined throne hall in a straight, merciless line.
He reappeared directly in front of Doom, already mid-kick, one leg cocked back like a loaded spring. Doom’s barrier snapped into existence in a fraction of a second. The impact was catastrophic. Peter’s charged heel smashed through the mystical shield with a sound like a mountain splitting open. The entire rear wall of the chamber disintegrated in a spray of pulverized stone. Doom was launched backward like a green-and-silver cannonball, tumbling end over end through the collapsing corridor until he slammed into the far wall of the next chamber hard enough to spiderweb the stone around him.
Even through the armor, Doom felt the damage. His personal energy reserves had been gutted by that single strike. The barrier that had once shrugged off orbital strikes now flickered and sparked, thin as paper. If not for the constant, thrumming power Mjolnir poured into his gauntlets, the blow might have ended him outright. As it was, the hammer’s stolen divinity kept him standing—barely.
What followed was pure architectural apocalypse.
Peter and Doom vanished into the deeper halls of the castle in a blur of lightning, magic, and kinetic force. Walls exploded outward. Entire rooms folded in on themselves. Supporting pillars sheared clean through. Explosions of blue, green, and black energy lit the corridors like strobe lights in a collapsing cathedral. The rest of the team could only track the pair by the successive shocks that rattled the remaining structure and the brief, terrifying glimpses of two figures smashing through room after room at impossible speed.
"Honestly, how are we supposed to assist him with that?!" Susan shouted, force-field flickering as another distant detonation showered them with debris. Most of the others shared the same helpless frustration. The castle was being systematically dismantled around them, and the fight was moving too fast for anyone still bound by normal physics to follow.
Harry Osborn, however, had other ideas.
He started bouncing lightly on the balls of his feet, wrist flicking at his side in a rapid, almost merry rhythm. Green energy crackled visibly along his arms and spine with every motion, building in intensity until the air around him shimmered with heat haze.
"What are you doing?" Johnny asked, staring at him like he’d lost his mind.
Harry grinned, wild and electric. "What do you think?"
"I’m joining in, like a *True* Best Friend would," His body erupted.
Green arcs of pure kinetic force exploded outward from his core. In the same instant he launched himself forward like a living missile, the air boom trailing behind him loud enough to rattle teeth. He appeared beside Peter in a flash of emerald light, matching the spider’s velocity with impossible ease.
"Need a hand?" he called over the roar of collapsing stone.
"No," Peter answered, already twisting into another lightning-charged strike, "but it’s appreciated."
Together they fell on Doom.
The three of them became a continuous storm of motion that tore through the compound without pause. Blue lightning met green kinetic force met the black-green fury of Doom’s magic and the stolen power of Mjolnir. Electricity howled against electricity. Force met greater force. Every collision sent shockwaves racing through the remaining walls. Doom spun the hammer in a wide, vicious arc and the air pressure in the corridor spiked so violently that both Peter and Harry locked in place for a single, fatal second—just long enough for a massive magic circle to bloom in front of them. Twin beams of pure arcane energy slammed into their chests and hurled them backward through two more walls.
Peter recovered first. A web-line shot out behind him, connecting to a half-destroyed support column. The webbing stretched taut, then snapped him forward again like a living rubber band. Nightwing was already moving in the same direction, escrima sticks spinning as he used the slingshot to join the pursuit.
They never reached Doom.
An emerald fog rolled through the corridor like a living thing, thick and luminous, swallowing the light. From the depths of that fog a single red glow appeared... then another... then dozens. Red optic beams lanced out from every direction at once, crisscrossing the air in lethal geometry.
Peter and Harry moved as one.
They flipped, twisted, and cartwheeled through the narrow gaps between the blasts with acrobatic precision born of pure survival instinct. For several heartbeats it almost worked. Then four beams converged on Peter’s chest at the exact moment another trio slammed into Harry’s torso. Both of them were blasted clean off their feet and sent tumbling back toward the others in a tangle of limbs and scorched fabric.
Reed Richards inflated himself into a massive ball just in time. The two younger heroes slammed into the living balloon and bounced harmlessly off of him, already shaking off the worst of the impact as Reed deflated back to human proportions.
Through the thinning green mist, heavy footsteps echoed.
Tall golem-like creatures of black stone emerged one after another, each bearing a single burning red eye in the center of its featureless face. The eyes opened in perfect unison and the optic blasts resumed without hesitation or mercy, a continuous barrage of crimson.
Peter’s hands moved in rapid, precise patterns. An eldritch magic circle flared beneath his feet, and a shimmering force-field blossomed outward in a protective dome around the entire group. The Mindless Ones’ beams hammered against it in an endless, thudding rhythm, each impact sending ripples of strain across the barrier’s surface.
"What the heck are those things?!" Ben demanded, rocky fists clenched as another volley flared against the shield.
"Mindless Ones," Peter answered, voice tight with concentration as he continuously reinforced the barrier. "Slaves of the Dark Dimension. They follow the orders of whoever summoned them—no free will, no mercy, just pure destructive obedience."
Susan sighed and layered her own invisible force-field over Peter’s, the two shields interlocking with a soft shimmer of combined power. "So you’re telling me that on top of the Doombots, Victor has an entire army of extra-dimensional servants ready to blast us to kingdom come?"
Peter gave a tired, humorless little shrug as the optic fire continued to pound against their dual protection.
"Pretty much."
