Chapter 98: The Opening

A shockwave swept across the chamber.

It wasn’t loud, but it was heavy. The kind of pressure that hits your chest before your ears. Dust that had sat untouched for centuries rose from the floor in a perfect ring.

Sky staggered backward, his boots scraping against the stone as he caught himself.

Chloe grabbed the edge of one of the pillars to steady herself, her other hand flying to her Forge Visor to keep it from slipping.

Vesper planted her feet firmly against the ground, her Holy Scepter Blade already in hand, its tip angled down, her stance ready before anyone else had even recovered.

For several seconds, nothing happened. The dust settled. The air was completely still again.

Then—

RUMBLE.

A massive stone door on the far side of the chamber began to move. It was so large they hadn’t even realized it was a door at first, thinking it was just part of the wall. Thick lines of dust poured from its edges as ancient mechanisms groaned back to life, grinding and turning somewhere deep inside the walls.

Sky tightened his grip around his Blood Blade. The red glow along its edge pulsed once, reacting to the change in the air.

The door continued opening, slow and heavy, stone grinding against stone until a narrow passage was revealed beyond it. No light came from inside. Just darkness that seemed to swallow the light from the chamber.

Tech girl stared at her Forge Visor. Numbers and readings scrolled rapidly across the display.

"There’s a path," she said. "It’s stable. The structure behind it is intact."

Sky glanced at her, not taking his eyes off the opening for more than a second.

"Anything else? What about traps, movement, energy spikes?"

She remained silent for several seconds. Her fingers moved quickly across the holographic display as she attempted to gather more information, filtering through layers of scanning modes.

Then her expression changed. Her eyebrows pulled together.

"Yes."

"What is it?" Sky asked.

Chloe slowly looked toward the passage, then back at her visor, then at the passage again.

"Something is alive down there."

The three of them fell silent. The groaning of the door had stopped. Now the silence felt different.

Sky’s eyes narrowed, his grip tightening again.

"How strong? Is it a beast? A remnant? What are we talking about?"

Chloe’s visor flickered repeatedly, lines of data distorting as it tried to get a clear reading. The energy down there was interfering.

"I can’t determine that," she admitted. "The reading is... blurred. It’s there, but the structure is masking it. I can feel the life signature but I can’t get a tier or a class."

Again.

The same problem they’d had since entering the lower levels.

Sky slowly exhaled through his nose, a small, dry laugh escaping him.

"Of course. It can never be simple, can it?"

Vesper stepped forward and examined the passage from a safe distance. She didn’t go too close. She raised her blade slightly, letting its faint holy light spill into the opening. The light didn’t go very far before the darkness swallowed it.

"Then we proceed carefully," she said. "If we can’t measure it, we assume it’s stronger than us."

Sky nodded. "Standard rule."

They began moving toward the entrance, falling into their usual formation without needing to discuss it. Sky in front, Vesper just behind him to the side, Chloe stayed between them, constantly scanning the surrounding walls and the passage ahead, her visor throwing a soft blue light on her face.

Unlike the labyrinth, there were no roots here.

No mud.

No bones.

No signs of the Dungeon trying to reclaim the place.

Everything was perfectly constructed. The floor was flat stone, cut so precisely you couldn’t see the seams. Ancient stone walls stretched into the darkness, covered with strange symbols and markings that none of them recognized. They weren’t the rough carvings of the early Dungeon explorers, nor the clean arrays of the current era.

Sky glanced at one of them, a spiral with six intersecting lines through it.

"Chloe."

"I know," she said, already stepping closer. "I saw it."

She was already scanning it, her visor zooming in.

"Give me a moment. This pattern keeps repeating."

A holographic image appeared before her, capturing the symbol and isolating it from the wall. The symbol rotated slowly in the air, its edges highlighted.

Her visor attempted to compare it with known records from the central Archive, running through thousands of known languages and Dungeon glyphs.

Nothing. No match at all. The comparison bar stayed at zero.

"No match," she said quietly.

Sky raised an eyebrow.

"Not even in the Array? The Array has everything from the last three hundred years."

"Not even close," tech girl replied, still staring at the symbol with growing curiosity. She reached out but stopped herself before touching it. "The structure, the stroke order, the logic... whatever civilization built this place didn’t use any of the known systems. It’s not even derived from them. It’s completely separate."

Vesper looked ahead, down the dark corridor that seemed to go on forever.

"Then perhaps we’re looking at something older than the current Dungeon Realm," she said. "Older than the First Descent."

Sky smiled faintly, despite the tension. That was the kind of thing that made a boring expedition worth it.

"Now that’s interesting. Older than the Realm itself? That would make this a Pre-Collapse site."

"Maybe even before that," Chloe whispered.

They continued forward, their footsteps echoing softly. After several meters, the corridor widened considerably. The narrow passage opened into a larger hallway.

A series of metallic structures became visible along the walls. Some were damaged, their panels ripped open and wires hanging loose like vines. Others remained perfectly intact, smooth black metal that reflected their lights.

Chloe immediately stopped and held up a hand.

"Wait."

Sky and Vesper turned toward her instantly, blades shifting.

She approached one of the structures, her visor scanning rapidly. The device was about chest-high, embedded into the wall, with a smooth surface and a faint circular indentation in the middle.

"This isn’t decoration," she said. "This is a terminal. Or a power relay. Look at the construction."

"What is it?" Sky asked, keeping watch down the hall.

"I don’t know yet," she said. She knelt down, her fingers hovering over it. "The design is too advanced to be just architecture."

Her visor projected several thin scanning lines across the device, mapping its interior.

"Give me a second. I’m trying to ping it."

For a second nothing happened. Then the machine suddenly flickered.

A faint blue light appeared in the indentation, pulsing weakly, like a heartbeat waking up after a long sleep.

Chloe’s eyes widened behind her visor.

"It still has power," she breathed. "After all this time... it still has power."

Sky stepped closer, looking down at it with genuine surprise.

"You mean this place is still functioning? After being sealed for gods know how long?"

"Some of it," she said, nodding fast. She looked deeper into the corridor where more of the same structures lined the walls, some dark, some now beginning to faintly flicker as if reacting to this one. "And if this system is connected to the rest of the facility..."

Her expression changed completely. The worry was gone, replaced by pure excitement, the kind she only got when she found something new.

"There could be records," she said. "Logs, data, maps of this whole complex. Maybe even information about what this place was built for."

Sky smiled, seeing her excitement and catching it himself.

"Then let’s find them. Let’s see what this place was hiding."

For the first time since entering the hidden depths, Chloe looked genuinely eager. The fear and fatigue from the labyrinth were gone.

"Finally," she said, a real smile breaking through. "Something I can actually investigate. Something that isn’t trying to kill us with roots and teeth."

Vesper shook her head slightly, but there was a small smile on her face too.

"You really enjoy this, don’t you? Ancient machines that could explode."

Chloe smiled back, adjusting her Forge Visor and already scanning the next terminal.

"Someone has to. You two like hitting things. I like finding out why those things were built in the first place."

Sky chuckled. "Fair enough."

The three continued deeper into the ancient structure, their lights pushing back the darkness a little further with each step. The blue lights on the walls flickered to life one by one as they passed, as if the building itself was remembering how to breathe.

Behind them, the massive stone door slowly began closing with a low rumble, sealing them inside. Dust fell from the ceiling as it locked.

But this time, Sky didn’t look back. He didn’t need to. There was no going back the way they came anyway.

Whatever this place was, however old it was...

They had finally found something worth investigating.

And Chloe intended to uncover its secrets.
