Chapter 92: Three Against the Abyss

Sky stared at the face inside the black core.

For a moment, his mind refused to process what he was seeing. The sheer geometric and anatomical wrongness of the entity defied logic, sending a wave of visceral nausea through his physical body back in the chamber. It was a shifting, melting tapestry of agony suspended in a pitch-black vacuum.

It wasn’t the face of a savage beast. It wasn’t even the face of a human.

It was something distorted between the two—a collection of countless features pressed together beneath a thin layer of black energy. Strands of dark, spectral ether bound the facial segments together like rotten thread, stretching and snapping as the mass shifted within its wooden cage.

Dozens of eyes opened across its surface. They weren’t matching pairs; some were human, wide and bloodshot, while others were vertical slits belonging to monstrous dungeon denizens or ancient creatures long forgotten by time.

All of them looked directly at him. They locked onto his Soul Clone with a unified, piercing focus that felt like a physical weight pressing against his brain.

Then they smiled. A fractured line split across the middle of the mass, peeling back to reveal rows of jagged, mismatched teeth that looked like broken gravestones.

Sky’s blood ran cold. The dread was absolute, a heavy frost that locked his joints and threatened to shatter his concentration.

What the hell is this? The Soul Clone instinctively tried to retreat. It pulled back, its shadowy limbs tensing to thrust away from the black core and return to the safety of the physical world

.

It couldn’t.

Something had wrapped itself around the clone. The ambient dark energy inside the core had extended tiny, hair-like cilia that adhered to the clone’s shadowy frame, cementing it in place with a crushing, suffocating force.

Feed.

The word echoed through Sky’s mind again.

This time, it was louder. It wasn’t a whisper or a distant concept anymore; it was a deafening roar that vibrated through his spiritual pathways, threatening to shatter his soul core into a million pieces.

The black core pulsed. A violent force erupted through the tree. A shockwave of pure, raw psychic pressure blew outward from the center of the core, ripping through the internal rings of timber and tearing along the spiritual thread connecting Sky to his clone. Sky’s body was thrown backward. The physical backlash hit him like a charging behemoth, lifting his boots entirely off the ground and launching him across the cavernous room.

"SKY!"

Vesper’s voice rang across the chamber. Her golden aura flared in a frantic, desperate burst as she watched him fly through the air.

He crashed into the ground and rolled several times before finally coming to a stop. The hard flagstones scraped against his armor, tearing away chunks of defensive fabric and sending a jolt of white-hot pain up his spine.

[ARMOR: 2/5]

Sky coughed. A spray of dark blood flecked his lips, his chest heaving as he forced his lungs to expand against the crushing phantom pressure that still lingered in his torso.

"Damn..."

The roots immediately surged toward him. Sensing his momentary weakness, the surrounding pale trees whipped their limbs forward, dozens of spear-like roots plunging downward to impale him while he was grounded.

Vesper intercepted them. Her Holy Scepter Blade flashed. SLASH! A wave of radiant energy tore through the roots. The brilliant crescent of golden fire cleaved the wooden spears into burning fragments, the intense heat cauterizing the stumps before they could begin their rapid regeneration process.

"Get up!" she yelled, her voice strained as she braced her shield against another incoming heavy root.

Sky forced himself to his feet. Every muscle in his body protested, but the alternative was becoming a permanent fixture of the grove’s bone-strewn floor.

"Working on it!"

Chloe suddenly shouted. Her mechanical gauntlets were typing at a furious pace across her holographic screens, filtering out the noise of the combat to isolate the core’s unique energy signature.

"Sky!"

He looked toward her, his Blood Blade manifesting back into his hand with a low, crackling hum.

"I know what that thing is."

She projected a rapidly changing image of the black core. The blue wireframe schematic had been replaced by a chaotic, multi-colored heat map that flickered violently with erratic spikes.

"It’s not a normal Core." Sky frowned, parrying a stray root that snapped at his flank.

"Then what is it?"

"It’s a collection."

"A collection of what?"

Chloe’s voice dropped. The technical detachment she usually maintained was entirely gone, replaced by a deep, unsettling horror

.

"Soul fragments."

Sky stared at the tree. His eyes widened as the horrifying mechanics of the grove finally clicked into place. Thousands of souls. All compressed together. All feeding the same existence. The entity wasn’t a singular consciousness that had evolved to hunt; it was a swirling vortex of stolen lives, a synthetic ego born from the amalgamated suffering of everything that had ever died within its territory.

Chloe continued, her fingers flying to stabilize the projecting array as another tremor shook the cavern.

"The tree has been absorbing souls for years. Maybe decades. Every soul it consumed became part of its core. They aren’t dead, Sky. They’ve been melted down and fused into the driving engine of this entire grove."

Vesper blocked another root. The heavy timber slammed into her shield with a dull, resonant thud, sending bright gold sparks showering over her armor.

"So the thing inside..." "Is everything it has eaten." Sky’s expression hardened. A cold, detached anger began to burn away the remaining traces of his fear. That explained the face. It wasn’t a trick or an illusion; it was the literal, physical manifestation of a collective nightmare. It wasn’t one creature.

It was countless dead souls fused together.

And somehow... They were still conscious. They were trapped in a state of eternal digestion, their shared agony twisted into a singular, ravenous hunger that demanded more fuel to sustain its unnatural existence.

Sky looked toward the tree. The massive trunk was pulsing violently now, the black core’s anger translating into a frantic, chaotic movement across every pale branch in the chamber.

"Then destroying the core might release them."

Chloe hesitated. She looked at the volatile feedback loops expanding across her diagnostic monitors, the data points threatening to breach safe operational thresholds.

"Maybe."

"Maybe?"

"We don’t know what happens when that many souls are released at once," she admitted, her voice trembling slightly. "It could trigger a spiritual explosion that collapses the entire floor of the dungeon. It could wipe our memories, or it could tear our own soul cores apart from the sheer pressure." Sky gave a bitter smile. He shifted his weight, raising his Blood Blade until the crimson edge aligned perfectly with the center of the colossal trunk.

"At this point, does it matter?" They had no exit. They had no backup. If they stayed defensive, they would eventually run out of mana, their stamina would fail, and they would be added to the collection inside the trunk.

Another root slammed into Vesper.

She blocked it, but the impact forced her several steps backward. The kinetic force was immense, her boots grinding into the shattered stone as she fought to keep her balance.

Her armor cracked. The pristine, white-and-gold plate across her shoulder fractured under the intense strain, the protective enchantments flickering out with a faint, dying hiss as the grove closed in for the kill.
