Soulless Soul
Chapter 81: Something Has Awakened
Chapter 81: Something Has Awakened
"Something’s wrong."
Sky immediately straightened. The hair on the back of his neck stood on end, an instinctual reaction to the sudden, sharp shift in the atmosphere. The heavy silence of the approaching dusk felt suffocating. Chloe’s fingers moved rapidly across the holographic display projected from her cracked visor. The faint, rhythmic tapping of her fingers was the only sound cutting through the oppressive quiet.
"What is it?" Sky asked, his voice low, barely a whisper against the rising wind.
"The labyrinth."
She expanded the map with a quick, decisive swipe. Dozens of faint blue markers appeared throughout the structure. The intricate, maze-like lines of the ancient ruins glowed softly, a web of neon geometry against the darkening twilight.
Then they began moving.
Sky’s expression hardened. He stepped closer, trying to peer over her shoulder, though he knew it was futile. "What am I looking at?" "Movement." Chloe zoomed in, her breath hitching slightly. "The creatures inside the labyrinth are changing positions."
Chloe’s fingers moved rapidly across the holographic display projected from her cracked visor. Sky couldn’t see what she was seeing. Neither could Vesper. The display was only visible to Chloe through her abilities, leaving the other two to rely entirely on the growing panic reflecting in her eyes.
Vesper’s eyes narrowed, her gaze shifting from Chloe to the looming, jagged silhouettes of the labyrinth walls below. "Because of sunset?"
"I think so," Chloe muttered, her teeth digging into her lower lip. Chloe’s cheerful demeanor was completely gone now. The bright, optimistic girl who usually kept their spirits up had vanished, replaced by a tense, hyper-focused scout. "Their movement patterns were scattered before. Random. Almost territorial. They were ignoring each other, guarding their own small pockets of the ruins."
She swiped across the display, tracing a path that made her fingers tremble slightly. The markers began converging. "Now they’re all heading in the same direction." Sky stared at the blank air where he knew the map hovered, trying to read the geometry of the threat.
"Toward us?"
Chloe shook her head. "No." She paused, her eyes tracking a rapid cluster of signals blinking on her retinas. "Toward the outer sections." Sky frowned, a knot forming in his stomach. "Why?" "I don’t know," Chloe whispered. "It’s like they’re abandoning the core. Like they’re running away from something... or clearing a path."
The last light of the sun slowly disappeared beyond the distant horizon, bleeding out in a thin, angry ribbon of crimson before swallowing the sky in ink. The labyrinth grew darker. The deep shadows within the stone trenches stretched outward like grasping hands, devouring the last remnants of twilight.
For a moment, nothing happened. The world seemed to hold its breath. Then Sky heard it. A distant sound, muffled by layers of ancient stone but unmistakable in its malice.
A low, guttural growl.
His hand immediately moved to his Blood Blade. The hilt felt familiar and reassuringly solid beneath his calloused palms, the crimson steel thrumming in sync with his accelerating heartbeat. Another growl followed. It echoed from a parallel corridor, sharper this time. Then another. And another.
They were coming from different directions, a rising chorus of beasts waking up to a feast. The sound seemed to rise from the very earth, vibrating through the soles of their boots.
Sky slowly looked around. The distant corridors were becoming darker by the second, turning into pitch-black voids that swallowed the light. His [Danger Sense] suddenly activated.
A cold sensation crawled across his skin, icy and violent, like a bucket of freezing water poured down his spine. It wasn’t just a vague feeling of unease; it was a screaming alarm in the back of his mind.
Sky’s pupils contracted. "How many?" Chloe’s visor flickered rapidly, the internal static casting erratic shadows across her pale face. "Too many. The outer ring is crawling with them. It’s a flood." Vesper calmly removed the wooden casing from her staff. Her movements were smooth, deliberate, and entirely devoid of fear.
Click.
The Holy Scepter Blade emerged. Golden light immediately illuminated the hilltop, casting a brilliant, warm sanctuary of light that pushed back the aggressive shadows. The holy energy crackled softly, a sharp contrast to the foul, dark aura rising from the valley below.
Chloe continued staring at her display, her eyes darting back and forth so fast it looked painful. "The creatures aren’t approaching randomly."
Sky tightened his grip on the Blood Blade, the metal drawing slightly on his own energy, preparing for conflict. "What are they doing?"
"They’re forming a perimeter," Chloe said, her voice cracking. "They aren’t hunting. They’re locking the place down. They’re trapping us inside."
Silence stretched over the hilltop, heavy and suffocating. Sky looked toward the labyrinth. The growls were getting louder, sharper, translating from distant echoes into immediate threats.
Something was happening. Something that had never happened during the day. The rules of the labyrinth had been rewritten the moment the sun dipped below the earth.
Vesper raised her blade, the golden light catching the fierce determination in her eyes.
"Then we move."
Sky glanced at her, his mind racing through their dwindling options. "Where?"
Vesper pointed toward the opposite side of the hill, where the slope dropped into a narrow, rocky ravine that bypassed the primary gate. "Out. We cut through the weakest point of the perimeter before the line solidifies."
Chloe shook her head, her hands dropping to her sides in a gesture of utter hopelessness.
"We can’t."
Vesper looked at her, her brow furrowing.
"Why?"
Chloe’s visor suddenly displayed a massive red warning symbol, the error code bleeding through the glass so brightly that even Sky and Vesper could see the crimson glare. Her voice became unusually quiet, stripped of all its remaining strength.
"Because the entire labyrinth just changed."
The ground beneath their feet trembled. It started as a faint hum, a micro-fracture of tectonic energy that rattled the loose pebbles around their boots. But it didn’t stop.
A deep vibration traveled through the hill. The ancient, monolithic stones of the labyrinth below began to grind against one another with a deafening, metallic screech. Massive walls shifted, sinking into the earth while others rose like jagged teeth, altering the geometry of the maze entirely. The path Vesper had pointed to was instantly cut off by a rising wall of solid bedrock.
Sky slowly looked down. He could feel the shockwaves traveling up his legs, rattling his bones.
Then—
BOOM.
Something enormous moved beneath the labyrinth. A tectonic shudder that nearly knocked them off their feet. The sound was primordial, a heavy, suffocating weight that pressed against their eardrums and made the air itself feel thick and unbreathable.
The three of them stood completely still, paralyzed not by fear, but by the sheer scale of the entity shifting beneath the stone.
Sky tightened his grip around the Blood Blade, his knuckles turning stark white against the leather wrap. Whatever was happening... It wasn’t simply the creatures becoming active at sunset.
