Chapter 58: Vesper Valerius—The Fragile, Unblessed granddaughter of the Very First Awakened
"You know exactly who I am, Arthur," Vesper said, her melodic voice cutting through the suffocating tension like a sheet of pure ice.
The sound was sharp, carrying an echo that seemed to bypass the parameters of the safe zone and speak directly to the minds of everyone standing within the lodge. The fierce, crackling golden aura that had been radiating from the Commander’s heavy iron breastplate flinched, the light dampening as if suffocated by her sheer presence of her.
Arthur’s massive grip tightened around the gold-rimmed edge of his tower shield, the thick metal groaning under the sudden, immense strain of his physical strength.
"I do, sister."
The single word fell like a heavy stone into a quiet pool, causing several nearby Commons and other independent operators to exchange deeply confused, anxious glances. They had always assumed Vesper was simply a high-tier wildcard—a rogue anomaly who had dropped into the server with an extraordinarily rare class profile. To hear the supreme leader of the largest military faction address her with such familial gravity shattered their understanding of the hub’s hierarchy.
Crazy Hope’s eyes narrowed slightly beneath the hood of her pristine white robes. She had fully expected a desperate resistance from his front line, a violent pushback from a guild trying to maintain its absolute monopoly, but she had not expected such willful ignorance from the crowd. Arthur knew the structural truth of this realm better than anyone else currently standing in this room. He had been there when the foundation was poured, and he knew exactly what blood had been spilled to write the safe zone’s protection codes.
"The Valerius family," she continued, her voice remaining level as she slowly turned her unreadable gray gaze away from the Commander to look toward the gathered Commons. "You all know the name, even if the passage of time and the trauma of the array has caused some of you to completely forget what that name actually means to your survival."
A heavy, suffocating silence settled over the Living Room. The clanking of the knights’ iron armor ceased entirely. Even the crackling of the dry firewood in the distant stone hearth seemed to quiet down, as if the dungeon itself were listening to her words. Arthur remained perfectly silent, his scarred face a hardened mask of gold and shadow under the tavern lights.
He already knew.
He knew about the original Founders. He knew about the horrific, unrecorded sacrifices that had been made during the first wave of the array. He knew precisely why the Valerius name was deeply carved into the main foundation of this artificial world—a world permanently infected and systematically overwritten by the mechanical logic of the Dungeon Array.
"My clan is entirely dead," Vesper said coldly, her tone devoid of pity or grief, carrying only the hard, unyielding weight of an historical fact. "They purposefully sacrificed their physical consciousnesses back in the waking world, letting their brains rot in those sterile metal cots, solely to map out the first three floors of this nightmare so your Vanguard Order and everyone else could have a safe, fortified sanctuary to rest in between active raid cycles."
She raised her slender right hand, her fingers tightening significantly around the smooth casing of the glowing green data drive they had just wrenched from the Grand Knight’s chassis.
"The Meat Grinder blueprint you’re all so desperate to possess and control? The data matrix that your elite scouts are willing to commit backstabbing executions to secure? It doesn’t belong to your Vanguard Order, and it certainly doesn’t belong to the system rules of this world. It belonged exclusively to my family."
She raised the green data drive slightly higher, letting the vibrant emerald illumination wash over the faces of the front-line knights. "The repository terminal on Floor 1-4 showed four out of four fragments because my family had already recovered the first two pieces decades ago, before they made their final, fatal way into the unmapped depths of the unknown. Two independent scouts later died in the lower biomes merely retrieving the third fragment from a glitched sector."
Her gray gaze briefly shifted toward Sky, who was still leaning lazily against the stone pillar, his hand resting comfortably on his forearm crossbow.
"Skies and I simply collected the final, missing piece that completed their life’s work."
The complex circuitry runes etched into the metallic casing of the drive began to pulse in a slow, rhythmic cadence, glowing in perfect, eerie harmony with the green runes on her white robes. It was a visual confirmation of ownership that the system itself could not deny.
Arthur finally spoke, his deep voice raspy and stripped of its usual commanding theater.
"You don’t need to explain that history to me, sister. I was there when the new first server log was re-written."
Vesper’s serene expression didn’t change a single fraction of a millimeter.
"Perhaps I do not need to explain it to you, Arthur."
She slowly turned her body toward the crowded rows of independent operators and lower-tier players who had been pushed to the perimeter of the room.
"But they need to understand the true economy of this floor."
Her voice grew significantly firmer, echoing off the high hardwood ceiling boards.
"This data drive isn’t your property to catalog and distribute, Commander. It is my direct inheritance."
She held the glowing drive tightly against her palm, the silver steel of her concealed broadsword humming faintly within its carbon-fiber sheath.
"And I am choosing to share its raw data with the living so we can all eventually clear the Gauntlet and wake up in our real bodies." Her sharp eyes settled back onto Arthur’s face, piercing through his defensive posture. "But if you choose to break our treaty now, right here in the center of the lodge, you aren’t simply executing a rogue solo runner who refused to bend the knee to your guild." A long, deliberate pause stretched through the tavern, the atmospheric pressure dropping.
"You’re actively betraying the sacred memory of the very people who built the protected floor you’re currently standing on to keep your skin from burning."
Arthur stared intensely at her, his golden hair framing a expression that was entirely frozen. There was no surprise in his eyes. There was no confusion regarding the lineage she claimed.
There was only a deep, paralyzing hesitation.
He knew exactly what her words meant for the internal stability of the hub. Executing Vesper—the last surviving member of the legendary Valerius bloodline—in plain, unrestricted view of the entire Living Room would not simply create a wave of moral outrage among the independent operators.
It had the immediate potential to ignite a catastrophic civil war between the primary factions, tearing the Vanguard Order apart from the inside out just days before the deadline.
But that political fallout wasn’t the only thing heavily weighing on his mind as he looked down at her.
Wait... am I actually afraid?
Arthur’s jaw tightened so hard the muscles along his neck bulged against his silver gorget.
Am I actually, truly afraid of her?
Her? Vesper Valerius—the fragile, unblessed granddaughter of the very first Awakened to ever sink into the cage? His heavy grip tightened further around the gold-rimmed border of the tower shield, the cold iron biting into his palms. He ran the combat mathematics through his head, evaluating his high-defense Paladin attributes against the unknown scaling of her newly evolved Sacred Light-Saber.
If he gave his knights the definitive order to strike right now, could he really put Vesper down and walk away from the carnage without taking a permanent, fatal wound to his own spiritual core?
Arthur had fought in countless brutal skirmishes across the lower biomes. He had faced massive, mutated boss variants and survived desperate, bloody situations that should have flatlined any common operator. He was a giant of the front lines.
Yet right now, standing in the relative safety of the Sanctuary lobby, he found himself completely hesitating before the absolute conviction of one single woman.
No.
It wasn’t raw fear.
At least, that is the calculated lie Arthur desperately told his own pride to keep his composure from shattering in front of his men.
It was necessary, tactical caution.
Slowly, methodically, Arthur lowered the massive weight of his gold-rimmed tower shield, letting the iron rim rest quietly against the hardwood floor.
The oppressive golden pressure filling the room vanished instantly, allowing the surrounding common players to finally draw a full, unhindered breath.
"Forge the weapon immediately," the Commander barked loudly at his front-line smiths, turning his heavy back on the portal circle without offering another look at the dead tracker’s terminal.
Then he stopped his stride, his boots anchoring into the wood.
"The terms of the independent treaty stand exactly as they were written."
His voice hardened into a cold, militaristic baritone that brooked no further argument from his captains.
"Every single able-bodied Awakened current residing in this room draws a blade and takes a position for the upcoming Royal Rumble event. There are no exemptions."
He glanced sharply over his armored shoulder, his golden hair catching the dim firelight one last time.
"No one sits in the back lines while my vanguard bleed to clear the sector."
His piercing eyes briefly settled on Vesper’s face before drifting toward the dark corner where Sky was standing.
"Not even those independent rats who crawl through the shadows without proper combat blessings."
Crazy Hope said absolutely nothing, her face remaining an emotionless mask as she watched his retreat.
Arthur didn’t need her thanks, and he certainly didn’t expect her submission.
They both knew the final decision had been made, the leverage had been spent, and the true test of their fragile alliance was now waiting for them just beyond the threshold.
