Chapter 27: Chapter 27: Going to the Rescue

With her large sniper rifle slung over her shoulder, Feng He ran so fast she was practically kicking up smoke.

She didn’t dare stop. She absolutely couldn’t stop!

The moment she did, a mutant beast’s claws would tear right into her.

A single swipe would mean instant death.

’I’d be off to see my great-grandma!’

"Help me!" Feng He felt her adrenaline surging.

All her senses were on high alert. Surrounded by thick brush, Feng He didn’t hesitate and plunged right in.

The light orb on her head bobbed erratically from her frantic pace.

When Mo Xuan heard his fiancée’s cry for help, he immediately scrambled to his feet, grabbed his large sniper rifle, and took off in her direction.

"Feng He, hang on!" Mo Xuan yelled as he ran.

’He couldn’t let Feng He die here.’

’If someone had to die, it would be him first!’

Gu Kaiwen hastily secured his rifle and charged out after him. Both men were rushing toward Feng He’s position.

In the tent, Shi Feng switched the video feed to Feng He’s camera. He was stunned to see a huge pack of mutant beasts hot on her heels.

"Feng He, you’ve got a whole pack of mutant beasts behind you!" Shi Feng warned. "Keep running!"

Seeing them just a meter behind her, Shi Feng’s heart leaped into his throat.

Meanwhile, upon hearing Feng He’s cry for help, Lin Jingjing looked up at the four mutant beasts in the sky, chanting inwardly, ’Faster. A little faster. Just a little faster.’

She then raised her large sniper rifle, aimed at the rearmost Red winged Beast, and fired!

Headshot. ’Next.’

Lin Jingjing wanted to end this quickly. Her focus was even sharper than it had been for her previous two shots.

As she watched the mutant beasts in the air, they seemed to be flying in slow motion, their movements sluggish.

Predicting the flight paths of two Red winged Beasts, Lin Jingjing adjusted her stance and fired again.

A single bullet hit two targets. The two mutant beasts, flying side-by-side, were both struck in the head by Lin Jingjing’s shot.

Only one was left—the one in closest pursuit.

’Feng He is waiting for me to rescue her. I can’t waste any more time here!’

Lin Jingjing reminded herself, adjusted her scope, and focused on the Red winged Beast behind the Mecha.

Aiming her rifle barrel at the Mecha, Lin Jingjing pulled the trigger with extreme decisiveness.

As the bullet left the barrel, Lin Jingjing performed a perfect kip-up, shouldered her large sniper rifle, and charged out.

Lin Jingjing didn’t even watch the bullet fly. The pilot of the blue Mecha, however, stared with wide eyes at the projectile speeding straight toward him!

’Is this person trying to kill me? They’re actually shooting at me!’

The pilot had no time to think, his only instinct to dodge the bullet. He grabbed the Controllers on the console and shoved them forward with all his might.

At the last possible second, he wrenched the ascending Mecha into a sharp turn, banking hard around the Red winged Beast.

The Red winged Beast, which had been tailing the Mecha, had no time to react. The bullet that was meant for the Mecha struck it right between the eyes.

Blood splattered everywhere, covering the blue Mecha’s outer shell. Inside, the pilot broke out in a cold sweat, terrified by the close call.

Once he recovered, he understood. That bullet had been a test of his Mecha piloting Skill and his reaction speed.

If his reaction had been a split-second slower, or his maneuvering just a bit less precise...

...it was highly likely that both he and the Red winged Beast would have been destroyed.

’An expert!’

’How could anyone be that skilled!’

Aidan was absolutely thrilled. ’A true master!’

His eyes filled with worshipful admiration.

’When this is over, I have to find them. I’ll ask them to teach me their incredible marksmanship!’

Once out of mortal danger, Aidan quickly contacted his teammate.

"Aaron, where are you?"

His teammate was surprised and overjoyed to hear Aidan’s voice.

"You’re alive!" Aaron exclaimed. "Six Red winged Beasts! How did you deal with them?"

Aidan swelled with pride. "I was saved by an incredibly powerful master."

"They took down every single Red winged Beast with a large sniper rifle!" The excitement in his voice was impossible to hide.

But Aaron was skeptical. Red winged Beasts were incredibly fast. To this day, no one had ever managed to shoot one down from the open sky with a large sniper rifle.

"You’ve got to be kidding. It’s impossible for someone to take down a Red winged Beast with a sniper rifle."

Seeing his teammate’s disbelief, Aidan grew angry. How could he doubt his savior!

"I have the video footage! If you don’t believe me, I’ll send it to you later!"

"If that master hadn’t saved me, I’d have been torn to shreds by now!" Aidan said, his tone turning dead serious. "So don’t you dare doubt my savior."

"Alright, alright," Aaron relented. ’As long as he’s alive, that’s what matters. We can argue about the details later.’

Meanwhile, Lin Jingjing was sprinting toward Feng He. The positions they’d all taken were quite far from each other.

It would take time to reach her. ’I just hope Feng He can hold on.’

Mo Xuan was frantic with worry. Seeing the woman he loved in mortal danger...

...unleashed a huge burst of adrenaline from his slender frame. He surged forward, reaching Feng He at an incredible speed.

Seeing the mutant beasts behind her, he slung his sniper rifle onto his back, raised an F-460, and began spraying bullets at the creatures swarming her.

Feng He’s eyes lit up when she saw someone not far ahead.

Recognizing the figure in the glow of the headlamp, Feng He cried out, "Mo Xuan!"

Gu Kaiwen arrived right after. His eyes widened at the sight of the mutant beasts. "Whoa, that’s a lot of them!"

After the initial shock, Gu Kaiwen grumbled, "Our rear flank was completely overrun, and nobody noticed?"

"Some people are just completely careless." As he spoke, Gu Kaiwen raised his own F-460 and started firing.

They were careful to avoid hitting Feng He, concentrating their fire on the surrounding mutant beasts.

"Up the trees, now!" Lin Jingjing shouted as she arrived. Seeing they couldn’t outrun the beasts, she knew their only option was to climb.

Mo Xuan and Gu Kaiwen scrambled up a tree, but Feng He couldn’t stop running.

The beasts were only a meter behind her; the instant she stopped, their claws would be on her back.

After climbing into a tree, Lin Jingjing stored her large sniper rifle in her Space Ring, then swung herself upside down, hanging from a thick branch.

Her legs hooked tightly around the branch as she extended her arms downward and yelled to the approaching Feng He, "Grab my hands!"

Mo Xuan didn’t just stand by. He pulled out a rope he carried, fearing that the momentum of catching Feng He would pull Lin Jingjing down.

He quickly moved closer, looped the rope around Lin Jingjing’s waist, and tied the other end securely to the tree trunk.

The two trees weren’t far apart. Just as Feng He leaped and desperately grabbed onto Lin Jingjing’s outstretched hands...

...Lin Jingjing used all her strength to swing her toward the opposite tree, where Gu Kaiwen was waiting.

He had also tied a rope around his own waist to keep from falling when he caught her.

Everyone held their breath as Feng He swung through the air.

Back in the tent, Shi Feng watched, his heart in his throat. ’Please let this work!’

Gu Kaiwen caught Feng He firmly by the legs. She dangled upside down in the air, staring at the mutant beasts below with their gaping, bloody maws.

She let out a long sigh of relief. She’d finally gotten away from them.

Seeing that she was safe, everyone breathed a collective sigh of relief.

Gu Kaiwen’s face was beet red from the strain. Thankfully, a large tree branch was behind him to brace his back.

Otherwise, the impact would have sent them both plummeting to the ground.
