Skyrim: Orebane
Chapter 126: There's always a bigger fish
"And this won't cause you trouble once word gets out?" Alontar asked worriedly.
"Yes and no. Yes because being a voice is a big deal for Nords and no because I haven't actually done anything wrong. The trouble that this will bring me will be more along the lines of people looking to marry me into their lineage or apprentice their children under me. The same sort of things Ulfric had to deal with once he returned to Skyrim, just more so since I am not a Jarl or noble of any kind as far as they know." I say honestly.
"And if your heritage were exposed?" he asked.
"One of roughly four outcomes by my reckoning. The first is that nothing changes. The fact I grew up and established myself from the orphanage in Riften is a fact. My actual heritage is garnish at most. A little pop of color but otherwise not really something to focus on. The second outcome is that basically all of Skyrim goes "nuh uh" and dismisses it outright. As far as that entire province knows i'm one of her people and that's that. Skyrim's people can be pretty bullheaded about some things after all, proof be damned." I said with a chuckle.
"And the third outcome?" he asked.
"That's the one in which I am met with suspicion and/or hatred from basically everyone. Thalmor, the enemies of the Thalmor and everyone else. Caught right in the middle until I do something major that firmly puts me on one side or the other. I already solved this problem by massacring the thousand ish soldiers this time. As for the fourth outcome? That's being looked at as a prime political tool. Even if I have no authority or power with my blood being what it is my very existence has weight. Half nord half royal blooded Altmer. The ideal middle ground for negotiations and political ties." I said calmly.
"If you know this then why act at all?" he couldn't help but ask.
I looked at him dead serious "Because it was my mistake that drew that army. I am no craven to flee and let another fight a battle meant for me." I said firmly.
"Your mother will be proud of who you are, even if that means little to you. So what comes next?" he asked curiously.
"I'll be leaving in a day. Going to travel this province until I can return to Skyrim proper. Not going to rush it either. Might cause the thalmor some more trouble while i'm at it." I say with a grin.
"Then I shall accompany you." he said resolutely.
"You realize I will be diving into ancient tombs, dwemer ruins and fighting things that might be long thought lost to time right?" I asked with a raised eyebrow.
"Then it will not be a boring journey at least. Besides, this will give me an opportunity to instill proper Alysaen manners into you. Your casual demeaner is clearly lacking in refinement." he said with a serious nod of his head.
I groaned at the thought.
After that I honestly didn't do much else while in Karghistan. I got that drink with Morghul and relaxed for my last day there before heading out. Alontar purchased a sand charger from the stables after selling his shop back to the town. He would have sold all of his stock as well if I didn't store it in my storage plane for him. I summoned my toad once we were outside the town and he looked offended at it.-
"I thought you said you had a Gryphon as a familiar?" he said eyeing the clearly demonic amphibian with disgust.
"First that's currently in Skyrim right now and entirely unrideable because it has long thick spikes down it's spine. Second this thing here is probably faster than that horse you are sitting on. And finally this thing can and will eat you if given the chance so as ugly as he is give him some respect." I say flatly.
"Ribbit." the toad croaked in agreement.
"I think I'm starting to see why the mad god adopted you as his nephew." he muttered.
"Rude. Regardless we are heading north north east for the Dragontail mountains. If I know Dwemer then there's bound to be a ruin there, maybe two." I say as I urge my toad forward.
"Dwemer ruins? Why bother those deathtraps?" he asked as he urged his horse forward as well.
"One because they have valuable stuff in them. And two because I happen to have need of some tools for tonal work that I'd rather not make myself and the ruins should have some laying around if no ones filched them yet." I explained simply.
"You know Dwemer tonal magic!?" he exclaimed in shock.
"Indeed. Don't bother asking how, you genuinely don't want to know." I say seriously as I pick up pace.
"Any other world shaking revelations?" he asked with dread filled looked of expectation.
"I'm also a sword singer and know the Ayleids Dawn magic. That's it though." I said without skipping a beat.
"Is the world ending or something!? Why would someone like you show up in this era otherwise!?" he says horrified.
I chuckled at that as he wasn't far off really. And if he thought I was a ridiculous existence then when the last dragonborn showed up he'd probably have a heart attack. It took me a decade and some to get where I am currently. If the game is even slightly accurate once the last dragonborn received the awakening of their dragon blood with Alduin's descent they'll rocket in strength, skill and sheer power in a span of months to a year at the latest. I'm an anomaly in terms of power compared to basically everyone else in the world today but compared to THAT? I'm hustling just to stay relevant.-
I'm not nearly arrogant enough to think I can match a dragonborn who is going to be feasting on the souls of multiple dragons and eventually even the soul of Miraak. This is a world where the lore of the game ACTUALLY mattered and the lore states that the dragonborn devour the experience, power and knowledge of the dragons slain by them. Miraak broke off a fucking island from the main continent in his battle with Vahlok The Jailer by sheer aftershocks alone and the last dragonborn is not only going to MATCH that level of power but exceed it when they eat his soul.
Calling them half-god would be no exaggeration.
