Six Months Contract With The Mafia God

Chapter 43: The Devil Fights

The inside of the warehouse had been gutted and rebuilt for exactly this purpose. Tiered standing areas ringed a central space.....not quite a ring, no ropes, just a circle of open floor with a drain at the center that Eve refused to look at for the second time this week. The crowd was enormous. Hundreds of people packed into the tiers, and not the kind of people she associated with legitimate entertainment.

These were dangerous people. She could feel it the way you felt weather...in the quality of the air, the way eyes moved, the particular alertness of bodies that were always ready for violence.

Several of those bodies noticed Dimitri the moment he walked in.

She watched it move through the crowd like a current. Heads turning. Postures shifting. Men who looked like they feared nothing straightening slightly, automatically, the way things moved in the presence of an apex predator.

A path cleared without anyone being asked to move.

Dimitri walked through it like he’d been born to, one hand light at the small of Eve’s back, and she understood with sudden, complete clarity why he came here.

Here he wasn’t performing control. He didn’t have to.

Here it was simply, undeniably, what he was.

Marco guided her to a position at the front of the upper tier....good sightline, solid wall at her back, two of Dimitri’s men flanking her without making it obvious. Dimitri said something low to Marco that she didn’t catch, and then he looked at her once more.

The anticipation was clearer now. Unmistakable.

"Watch," he said simply.

Then he walked down toward the circle.

She’d expected a warm-up. An announcement. Some kind of preamble.

There wasn’t one.

Dimitri walked into the circle, and a man walked in from the other side — enormous, easily three inches taller, the kind of build that came from years of deliberate brutality....and then it simply began.

Eve’s hand found the railing.

Dimitri fought like he did everything else. No wasted movement. No performance. Just absolute, surgical efficiency that was somehow more terrifying than wild aggression would have been. He took hits....she flinched at each one, her knuckles whitening on the rail....but absorbed them like they were information rather than damage, adjusting, calculating, never losing the cold clarity in his eyes.

His opponent was good. Genuinely good. The crowd was loud with it, the energy in the room ratcheting up with each exchange.

Then Dimitri shifted.

She didn’t fully understand what changed.....some internal decision, some gear engaging...but it was visible. His shoulders dropped slightly. His breathing changed. And then he was different, faster, more fluid, and his opponent started losing ground in increments that became quickly less incremental.

Three minutes in, it was over.

The crowd erupted.

Eve realized her mouth was open and closed it.

She was shaking again. This was becoming a habit around this man...her body refusing to behave, her nervous system making decisions her brain hadn’t approved. The fear was real. The adrenaline was real.

And underneath both, inevitable and infuriating and completely her own, the heat.

Dimitri straightened in the center of the circle. There was blood on his face....a cut above his brow, already swelling....and his shirt was gone, lost somewhere in the first minute, and he was breathing hard for the first time she’d ever witnessed, his chest heaving, his taped hands loose at his sides.

He turned.

Found her in the crowd like he had a compass calibrated specifically to her location.

Their eyes met across the warehouse.

Eve forgot to breathe.

Something moved across his face...fierce and raw and completely unguarded in a way she almost never saw from him. Not the Devil. Not the Don. Just Dimitri, stripped down to something essential, looking at her like she was the only fixed point in the room.

She didn’t look away.

Couldn’t.

His jaw tightened. He held her gaze for three full seconds.....an eternity in a room this loud, this charged....and then someone was pulling him aside, towel and water materialized from somewhere, and the moment broke.

But she felt it still. Like a brand.

He came to her twenty minutes later.

The cut above his brow had been taped. Someone had given him a clean shirt that he hadn’t bothered to button. His knuckles were newly dark beneath the tape, and he smelled like sweat and iron and something underneath both that was simply, specifically him.

He stopped in front of her and looked at her face with that habitual, total attention.

"You’re not horrified," he said.

It wasn’t quite a question.

"No," she said honestly.

"What are you?"

She held his gaze. "I don’t have a word for it."

Something flickered in his eyes. "Try."

She thought about it....about the right word for watching the most dangerous man she’d ever known move through violence with the focused grace of something built for it, and feeling not horror but a bone-deep, helpless recognition. Like seeing something finally operating at its true capacity.

"Proud," she said quietly.

The word landed visibly. She watched it hit him....watched something in his expression crack open slightly, the way it had when she’d said I love you for the first time. Like he’d expected many possible answers and not that one.

His hand came up and cupped her face, his thumb at her cheekbone, and he looked at her for a long moment with those storm-grey eyes that usually kept everything out.

They weren’t keeping anything out right now.

"We’re leaving," he said, his voice rougher than usual.

"Okay."

"Now."

"Okay, Dimitri."

He kissed her in the middle of the warehouse, in front of hundreds of dangerous people, without appearing to care even slightly. One hand in her hair, one at her jaw, unhurried and absolute and claiming in the way that everything he did was claiming.

When he pulled back, the room around them had gone interestingly quiet.

He didn’t acknowledge it.

"Marco," he said, already turning. "Car."

Eve followed him out with her heart in her throat and that word still sitting between them, warm and irreversible.

Proud.
