Chapter 405: Isabella Escaped

POV: ISABELLA

5:45 PM — ISABELLA’S ROOM

Isabella stood in front of her closet, staring at her options.

She’d already decided what to wear...black fitted pants, a cream-colored sweater, neutral shoes suitable for walking. Nothing that would draw attention. Nothing that would suggest she was planning anything other than a normal evening walk.

She folded these items carefully and set them on her bed.

Then she looked around her room.

This space that had been her prison and her sanctuary simultaneously. The walls painted in soft colors chosen by her mother. The furniture selected for aesthetics rather than comfort. The photographs on the shelves showing her at various ages, smiling for the camera at events orchestrated by her father.

This might be the last time she would see this room as her home.

After tonight, it would just be a place she used to live.

Isabella dressed slowly, deliberately. Each piece of clothing felt like she was shedding skin, preparing to become someone else. The person who left this room wasn’t going to come back to it. The person who returned, if she ever returned....would be fundamentally changed.

She checked her phone one final time. 5:58 PM.

Thirty-two minutes until 6:30 PM. Thirty-two minutes until she walked out of her father’s house and into a life she couldn’t predict or control.

She set the phone on her bed, face down. She wouldn’t be bringing it with her.

Isabella took a breath and opened her bedroom door.

6:18 PM — THE CORRIDORS

The hallways of the Russo estate were exactly as they always were.

Staff moving quietly about their business. Faint sounds of the household continuing its evening routines. Servants preparing dinner. Guards positioning themselves for the night shift. Everything absolutely normal.

Isabella walked toward the garden entrance with the kind of casual confidence that came from doing this walk dozens of times before. Her guard...a man named Paolo who maintained respectful distance during her walks....fell into position behind her, just far enough back that he wasn’t intrusive.

"I’m going for my walk," Isabella said to him, the words exactly as she’d said them every evening for the past month.

"Of course, Signora," Paolo said. "Enjoy the gardens."

She pushed open the heavy wooden doors that led outside.

The evening air was cool, carrying the scent of Roman gardens...jasmine, lavender, the green smell of well-maintained plants. The sun was beginning to descend toward the horizon, painting the sky in shades of gold and amber.

It was beautiful.

It was the last time she would see this garden as part of her life.

6:28 PM — THE GARDENS

Isabella walked the familiar paths through the Russo gardens.

Her pace was measured. Her breathing was controlled, though her heart was beating so hard she was sure anyone walking past would be able to hear it.

She was aware of every shadow. Every sound. Every possibility that someone might see her, might question her, might stop her before she reached the gate.

But no one did.

The gardens were vast...three acres of manicured hedges and stone pathways and carefully planted groves. Her father had designed them to be beautiful but also to be private. The outer edges of the garden were less frequently patrolled. The trees were denser. The shadows were deeper.

It was the perfect place to disappear from.

Isabella reached the path that led toward the eastern perimeter.

Her hands were shaking now. She kept them in her pockets, hidden from view. She kept walking, kept breathing, kept moving forward.

6:30 PM exactly. The moment Dante had specified.

The eastern gate was coming into view through the trees.

It was a wrought-iron structure, ornate but functional. It was locked from the inside, a security measure meant to keep intruders out and residents contained.

Isabella had walked past this gate dozens of times without really seeing it.

Now it represented everything.

She could see the guard....Milo positioned on the other side. He was wearing the standard Russo family guard uniform. He looked completely normal. Completely ordinary. Just another guard doing his job.

But when his eyes met hers, she saw recognition.

He knew she was coming. He was waiting.

Isabella’s pace didn’t change. She walked naturally toward the gate, as if she’d decided to take a slightly different route on her walk. Nothing unusual. Nothing suspicious.

She reached the gate.

Milo looked at her for a moment, and she could see something like sympathy in his eyes. He understood what this moment meant. He understood that she was about to cross a line from which there was no return.

He didn’t speak.

He simply reached down and unlocked the gate with a key that hung from his belt.

The gate swung open silently.

Isabella stepped toward the opening.

"Take care of yourself, Signora," Milo said quietly. "He’s a good man. Whatever else you might think, he’s good to the people who matter to him."

Isabella nodded, not trusting her voice to work.

She walked through the gate.

And in that moment, she understood with absolute certainty that there was no going back.

She was no longer a Russo. She was no longer subject to her father’s will. She was no longer a piece on her family’s chessboard.

She was just Isabella. Walking away. Choosing her own path.

The forest beyond the Russo estate was wild and untended compared to the manicured gardens.

Branches hung low. The path was barely visible. The light was fading as the sun descended, leaving everything in shades of grey and shadow.

Isabella walked deeper into the trees, following the path Dante had described.

Approximately two hundred meters. That’s what he’d said.

She counted as she walked. Ten steps. Twenty. Thirty. The trees were getting thicker. The path was getting harder to see. Fear was beginning to creep in. What if she’d missed the clearing? What if Dante’s car wasn’t there? What if something had gone wrong?

But she kept walking.
