Six Months Contract With The Mafia God

Chapter 37: Her name was Claire

Eve thought about the torture scene in the warehouse. The cold precision of it. The way Dimitri had broken a man’s fingers one by one without raising his voice. She’d asked herself how someone became that, what turned a person into something capable of that kind of calculated cruelty.

Now she thought she understood a little better.

When you learned at eight years old that the world was brutal and that love made you a target, you had two choices. You could break. Or you could become the most dangerous thing in the room, so that no one would ever have the power to take something from you again.

Dimitri had chosen the latter.

"He came to me at nine," Nonna said quietly. "Antonio sent me to look after him....I had worked for the family for years. But Dimitri didn’t want a nanny. He wanted nothing from anyone." A small, sad smile. "It took two years before he let me hug him. Two years of me simply being present, not asking for anything, not trying to replace what he’d lost. Just... being there."

"And then he let you in."

"And then he let me in." Nonna reached across the counter and covered Eve’s hand with hers. "He does not do that easily. He never has. So when I tell you that this boy called me specifically to meet you...that he brought you to me....you must understand what that means. It is not a small thing. For Dimitri Valentino, it is perhaps the largest thing."

Eve stared at their joined hands, her throat working.

"I know," she managed.

"Do you?" Nonna’s grip tightened slightly, not hard....firm. Grounding. "Then I need you to hear me, cara, because I am going to say something now that I say to you not to frighten you but because I respect you. Because I think you are strong enough to hear it."

Eve looked up and met the older woman’s eyes.

"This world he lives in....the one you are stepping into...it is not like anything you have known. You are a smart woman. A strong woman. You have built something from nothing and survived a marriage that would have broken others. I see that in you." Nonna’s thumb moved gently across her knuckles. "But being with Dimitri is not simply loving a difficult man. It is not just accepting his darkness or standing beside him when things are hard."

She paused, and her eyes held Eve’s with the steady, unflinching honesty of someone who had lived inside this world for decades and had no illusions left about it.

"There will be people who want to use you to get to him. There will be enemies you cannot see coming, who will smile at you over dinner and want you dead by morning. There will be moments when you have to make choices that have no good answer....only the less terrible one." Her voice was quiet, absolute. "There will be things you cannot unknow once you know them. Things you cannot unsee. And there is no leaving the Valentino world cleanly once you are truly in it. You understand?"

Eve’s heart was beating hard, but her voice came out steady. "I understand."

"I am not trying to frighten you away." Nonna released her hand and sat back, her expression softening. "Truly. If I wanted you gone, I would not be sitting here telling you these things. I would simply let you find out on your own, which is a much crueler education." A small, dry smile. "I am telling you because Dimitri needs someone who chooses this with open eyes. Not someone who stays until the reality becomes too much and then runs. Because if you run after he has let you in all the way..." She trailed off.

She didn’t need to finish the sentence.

Eve understood exactly what it would do to him. Exactly what it would cost.

"I’m not going to run," Eve said.

"I believe you mean that now."

"I mean it for everything that’s coming." Eve held the older woman’s gaze. "I’ve already seen him break a man’s fingers without flinching. I’ve already watched him threaten death like it was small talk. I’ve already found out that the man I’m sleeping with controls sixty percent of this country’s criminal operations." She paused. "I’m still here, Nonna. I’m not here by accident. I’m here because I want to be."

Nonna studied her for a long, searching moment.

Then she nodded. Once. Decisive.

"Good," she said simply.

She stood, moved back to the stove, and picked up her knife like the conversation had concluded and now it was time for lunch. But as she turned back to the cutting board, she added, without looking up:

"His mother would have liked you, I think. Claire always said the Valentino men needed women with stubbornness in their bones." A quiet pause. "She was right about most things."

Eve sat with that, turning it over in her chest like something fragile and irreplaceable.

Down the hallway, she heard Dimitri’s call end. Heard his footsteps....unhurried, measured, exactly the way he moved through every room....growing closer.

He appeared in the kitchen doorway, his sleeves rolled to his elbows, his eyes moving immediately to Eve with that habitual, unconscious checking that she’d noticed weeks ago. Like her presence or absence in a room was the first thing he registered, before anything else.

He looked between them. Something shifted in his expression....subtle, barely there.

"What did I miss?"

"Nothing," Nonna said serenely, not looking up from her cutting board. "We were talking about birds."

Dimitri’s eyes moved to Eve.

Eve picked up her coffee cup and took a sip, her expression perfectly neutral.

"Birds," she confirmed.

He looked at them both for another moment....his grandmother, who had raised him, and the woman who was dismantling every wall he’d built...and something crossed his face that wasn’t quite suspicion and wasn’t quite relief.

It was, Eve thought, something closer to terrified hope.

"Lunch in twenty minutes," Nonna announced. "Dimitri, set the table. Eve, come help me with this sauce." ℯℯ𝑙.

"I don’t know how to make Italian sauce."

"Then today you learn." Nonna pointed the knife at the stove. "Come."

Dimitri caught Eve’s eye as she stood, and for a moment....just a moment....she saw it. The question he couldn’t ask. What did she tell you? What do you know now?

She crossed the kitchen, stopped beside him, and rose on her toes to press a soft kiss to the corner of his jaw.

"Set the table," she murmured against his skin.

He caught her wrist as she pulled back. His grip was light....barely there....but she felt it like a brand.

"Eve."

"I’m okay," she said quietly, meeting his eyes. "Better than okay."

He searched her face for a long moment, looking for the crack, the hesitation, the moment she’d finally understood what she’d walked into and started pulling back.

He didn’t find it.

His grip on her wrist loosened, his thumb moving in one slow stroke across her pulse point....a touch so small and so careful she felt it echo through her entire chest.

Then he let go.

"Set the table," Nonna repeated, not turning around. "I will not ask again."

Dimitri started setting the table.
