POV: DANTE

DAY 1

The pain was a living thing.

It had texture and temperature and weight. It sat on his chest like a predator, breathing into his face, reminding him with every breath that he was wounded.

Dante lay on the surgical table in the safe house’s medical room, his leg immobilized in a compression cast, his ribs wrapped so tight he could barely breathe. The IV in his arm delivered a steady stream of medications...painkillers, antibiotics, anti-inflammatories. The combination created a strange cocktail of numbness and heightened awareness, like his body was underwater but his mind was screaming.

"How are you feeling?" Luca asked from somewhere beyond the fog.

Dante wanted to laugh. Wanted to scream. Wanted to burn down the entire building and everyone in it because the answer was: like absolute hell.

Instead, he said nothing.

The silence stretched between them. Luca didn’t push. One of the things Dante appreciated about him was that he understood when words were a waste of energy.

"I’m going to need you to drink," Luca said finally, holding a water bottle with a straw to Dante’s lips. "Your body needs hydration. The medications are drying you out."

Dante drank, the water tasting like metal and disappointment.

"The infection risk is highest in the first 72 hours," Luca continued, his voice taking on the clinical tone he used when delivering information Dante needed but didn’t want to hear. "I’ve packed the leg wound with antibiotics and dressed it properly, but you need to keep it elevated. You need to rest. You need to let your body heal."

"How long?" Dante asked, his voice rough from disuse.

"Before you can walk?" Luca’s jaw clenched. "Realistically? Like i had earlier said, Two to three weeks on crutches. Another two weeks of weight-bearing rehabilitation before you can move without assistance. A month before you’re truly functional."

A month.

Dimitri was out there right now, consolidating his position, strengthening his defenses, preparing for the next phase of the war.

And Dante was lying on a table, unable to do anything but suffer.

"I can accelerate the recovery," Luca said, reading the rage building in Dante’s eyes. "Physical therapy starting tomorrow. Aggressive rehabilitation. But boss, you have to understand something: pushing too hard, too fast, will result in re-injury. And re-injury will set you back months, not weeks."

Dante closed his eyes. Understood the logic. Hated it anyway.

"Start tomorrow," he said flatly. "I don’t care about the pain. I don’t care about the risk. I want to be mobile in two weeks."

"That’s not realistic....."

"Make it realistic, Luca. That’s what you do. You make impossible things possible."

Luca was quiet for a long moment. Then: "I’ll do what I can."

***

Dante woke screaming.

The dream had felt real. Had felt like he was back in that warehouse, watching his men die. Watching Dimitri move through them like death itself. Watching the bullets punch through flesh. Watching the blood. Watching everything he’d built crumble in minutes.

His leg was throbbing. His ribs were on fire. His heart was pounding so hard he thought it might rupture.

Luca was there immediately, emerging from the shadows of the medical room.

"Easy, boss. Easy. You’re safe. You’re in the safe house. You’re okay."

But Dante wasn’t okay. Dante was covered in sweat and shaking and couldn’t breathe and couldn’t think and couldn’t do anything but lie there while his body betrayed him and his mind played out the warehouse over and over again.

"I’m giving you something for the nightmares," Luca said, preparing an injection. "It’ll help you sleep without the dreams."

"No drugs," Dante said automatically. "I need to keep my mind clear."

"Your mind needs rest," Luca countered. "And you’re not going to get rest if you’re having nightmares every time you close your eyes. Take the medication, boss. That’s an order from your medical advisor."

Dante wanted to refuse. Wanted to push Luca away and show him that he was still in control, still the strongest person in this room.

But his hands were shaking. His breathing was erratic. And he was terrified that if he closed his eyes again, he’d be back in that warehouse watching his men die.

He took the medication.

***

The physical therapy started at six in the morning, and it was hell.

Luca had converted one of the warehouse rooms into a makeshift rehabilitation space. A parallel bar setup. A stationary bike that wouldn’t put pressure on the injured leg. Resistance bands. Everything needed to start the slow process of regaining mobility.

"We’re going to start slow," Luca said, helping Dante into a seated position. "Range of motion exercises first. Getting the blood flowing. Waking up the muscles without putting stress on the wound."

"Just tell me what to do," Dante said, his jaw clenched.

The first movement was agony.

A simple knee bend, barely five degrees of movement, and Dante’s entire body went rigid with pain. His vision grayed at the edges. He felt bile rise in his throat.

"Breathe through it," Luca said calmly. "You’re fine. The pain is your body telling you it’s healing. Embrace it."

"Easy for you to say."

"Is it?" Luca’s voice had an edge to it. "You think I like watching you suffer, boss? You think this is enjoyable for me?"

Dante didn’t respond. Just focused on breathing. On moving through the pain rather than against it.

They worked for thirty minutes. Thirty minutes of tiny, agonizing movements that probably didn’t look like much to an outside observer but felt like climbing mountains to Dante’s broken body.

By the end, he was shaking with exhaustion and pain and medication coursing through his system.

"Good," Luca said. "You did well today. Tomorrow, we’ll do more."

"I could barely move," Dante said bitterly.

"Exactly. Which means tomorrow, you’ll do it better. That’s how recovery works, boss. Small gains. Day after day. Until one day you realize you can do something you couldn’t do before."
