Six Months Contract With The Mafia God
Chapter 285: The Drug Analysis Is Complete
"I understand," Dimitri said.
"And Dimitri...." Antonio paused. "Don’t underestimate Dante. He’s ruthless and he’s desperate now. That makes him dangerous."
"I don’t underestimate anyone," Dimitri said, and hung up.
He set down the phone and looked at Marco.
"Your father knows," Marco said. It wasn’t a question.
"Yes," Dimitri confirmed. "And he’s not happy. But he’ll accept it. Because deep down, he understands that what I did was exactly what he would have done in my position."
"Is that going to be a problem?" Marco asked.
"Not yet," Dimitri said. "But eventually, yes. my father is going to want to have a conversation about power and control and my place in the family structure. That conversation isn’t going to go well for him."

Upstairs, Eve woke to find the bed empty.
She lay there for a moment, listening to the sounds of the safe house, trying to process what had happened in the past twelve hours.
She’d been locked in a room. Dimitri had gone to fight. There had been gunshots and sounds of violence. And then it was over, and he’d come back to her like none of it ever happened
He’d killed seven men to protect her.
The reality of that was still settling in her mind.
Eve got out of bed and showered, trying to wash away the stress and fear of the previous night. The hot water helped, but it couldn’t erase the knowledge that she’d been in a place where people were dying just below her.
She dressed and made her way downstairs, following the sound of voices.
She found Dimitri and Marco in the operations room, studying maps and monitoring feeds.
The moment Dimitri saw her, he pulled her into his arms.
"How are you feeling?" he asked, kissing the top of her head.
"Confused," Eve said honestly. "Scared. Grateful. All at the same time."
"That’s normal," Dimitri said. "What you experienced last night was traumatic. It’s okay to feel all of those things."
Eve pulled back and looked at him. Really looked at him. At the man who’d killed seven people without hesitation. Without remorse. Without anything except the absolute certainty that it was necessary.
"Was it bad?" she asked. "The fighting?"
"No," Dimitri said. "We were prepared. They weren’t. It was over quickly."
Eve nodded slowly, processing that information.
"Marco," Dimitri said, "give us a moment?"
"Of course," Marco said, standing and excusing himself from the room.
Dimitri guided Eve to the couch and they sat down together.
"I need you to understand something," Dimitri said, his voice serious. "What happened last night is part of my world. It’s part of being with me. There will be people who come after us. There will be violence. There will be blood. And I will kill anyone who threatens what’s mine. Understanding that is important."
"I understand," Eve said quietly.
"Do you?" Dimitri asked. "Or are you still processing?"
"Both," Eve said. "But I understand that you did what you had to do. And I understand that you kept me safe. And I understand that I’m choosing to stay with you anyway."
Dimitri pulled her close and held her.
"I love you," he said.
"I love you too," Eve replied. "Even when you’re terrifying and dangerous and covered in blood."
"Especially then?" Dimitri asked with a slight smile.
"Especially then," Eve confirmed.
They sat together in silence for a while, just holding each other, both understanding that their island vacation was over. That the war had found them. That the next phase of their life together was about to begin.
Outside, the sun climbed higher in the sky.
And in Rome, Dante Romano was making phone calls to the few men he had left, planning his next move, understanding that Dimitri Valentino was no longer someone to be underestimated.
The consequences were only just beginning.

POV: DANTE
The lab results came back at 2 PM.
Luca walked into Dante’s office with a folder in his hands, his expression unreadable in the way that came from years of delivering both good and bad news to a man who killed people for a living.
"The pills," Luca said, setting the folder on Dante’s desk. "The analysis is complete."
Dante opened the folder and read through the technical breakdown. Benzodiazepines. Specifically, a high-dose anxiety medication. The kind that was legitimately prescribed by doctors but was also highly addictive when used improperly.
"So it’s exactly what the label says," Dante said, reading through the results. "Anxiety medication."
"Yes," Luca confirmed. "But there’s something interesting in the analysis."
"What?"
"The dosage in her system is significantly higher than therapeutic levels," Luca said. "She’s taking roughly double the recommended daily amount. That level of overdosing would cause the kind of behavioral changes we’ve been observing....drowsiness, compliance, inability to make clear decisions."
Dante looked up from the report.
"Are you saying that her father gave her anxiety medication," he said slowly, understanding beginning to crystallize. "But he’s making sure she takes so much of it that she becomes completely dependent and compliant."
"That’s the most likely explanation we have," Luca said. "It’s not poisoning in the traditional sense. It’s control through chemistry. Legitimate medication used in an illegitimate way."
Dante set down the report and thought about Isabella. About the way her eyes had started to glaze over sometimes when they were together. About the way she’d become more compliant over the weeks. About the fact that she’d been getting progressively more dependent on his presence and his touch.
It wasn’t because she loved him. It was because her father had chemically engineered her dependency, and Dante had just become a substitute for the chaos she couldn’t process anymore.
The realization should have made him angry. Should have made him want to protect her, to help her, to expose what her father had done.
Instead, it just made him want her more.
Because understanding that she was vulnerable, that she was controlled, that she was essentially broken, that made her his in a way that pure attraction never could.
