Six Months Contract With The Mafia God
Chapter 203: The Suicide Mission
Marco set the case on the bed and opened it.
Inside were the tools of modern espionage, listening devices no larger than grains of rice, transmitters disguised as dental work, cameras embedded in buttons, trackers woven into fabric fibers.
"This is your primary communication device," Marco said, holding up what looked like a standard molar. "Titanium reinforced. Encrypted transmission. Once every forty-eight hours, you activate it by pressing your tongue against the back upper right. It sends a burst transmission to our satellite receiver. Takes three seconds. Undetectable."
James nodded, understanding the gravity of what he was about to do.
"Second device," Marco continued, "is your location tracker. Embedded in the sole of your left shoe. It’s passive....doesn’t transmit unless we ping it. Can track you to within ten meters."
He held up a standard-looking button.
"Camera. Lodges in a shirt button. High definition. Sound and video. Battery lasts seventy-two hours."
James listened as Marco walked through each device.
A listening device disguised as a scar. A transmitter woven into his boxer waistband. A microfilm cartridge hidden inside a medical ID bracelet that would list him as diabetic in case they did a thorough body search.
"The key," Marco said, meeting James’s eyes, "is that you don’t think about them. They’re part of you now. But more importantly.....if they discover them, you’re dead. There’s no negotiation with The Covenant. There’s no extraction if you get burned. You understand?"
"I understand," James said quietly.
"Dimitri wants me to make sure you know that."
"I know." James had made peace with that reality weeks ago. "This isn’t a rescue mission. It’s a one-way operation. I go in, I gather intelligence, and I hopefully survive long enough to transmit it back."
"Hopefully," Marco repeated, and something like respect flickered across his face.

POV: MARCO
The van was parked three blocks away from the target location.
It was a standard commercial vehicle....the kind used by IT companies or contractors. Nothing that would draw attention. Nothing that would suggest it contained some of the most sophisticated surveillance equipment in the world.
Inside, Marco sat at a bank of monitors with Thomas...the communications specialist, Davis...tech analyst, and Rodriguez....security chief.
James was in the back, getting final preparations done.
His last few minutes as a free man, essentially.
"Devices are all syncing," Thomas said, his fingers flying over keyboards. "Primary, secondary, tertiary....all coming online. Signal strength is excellent."
"Location tracker?" Marco asked.
"Five bars. We’ll have live positioning the entire time."
Marco checked his watch. 6:47 PM. James was scheduled to be at the recruitment site at 7:15. The Covenant operated out of an abandoned pharmaceutical facility in New Jersey....perfect isolation, perfect security, perfect containment for their operations.
The door to the back opened, and James emerged.
He looked completely different now.
The devices had been installed with surgical precision. The molar was seamless. The button camera was indistinguishable from any other button. The tracking device was invisible in his shoe. The listening scar was just one more mark among many scars James carried.
But more than the physical equipment, there was something else that had changed.
James’s entire demeanor had shifted. His expression had gone blank. His eyes had taken on that thousand-yard stare that came from compartmentalizing everything except the immediate mission.
"You’re good to go," Marco said.
James nodded once.
"When you get taken, don’t fight it. Let them control the situation. Make yourself seem desperate, vulnerable, perfect for their purposes. The more you seem like a broken test subject, the less suspicion you’ll generate."
"Understood."
"Two-hour check-in window. If we don’t hear from you by 9 PM, we assume you’re in full isolation and we switch to passive tracking only."
"Got it."
Marco extended his hand.
James shook it, his grip solid and warm and absolutely steady.
"Thank you," James said quietly.
"Don’t thank me yet," Marco replied. "You’re not out of this yet."
James moved to the door, then paused.
"If this goes wrong, if I don’t make it out....I want Dimitri to know that I’m doing this willingly. That every moment of this is my choice."
"He already knows," Marco said.
James nodded and stepped out of the van into the New Jersey evening.

POV: JAMES
The pharmaceutical facility was exactly what he’d expected.
Decrepit. Abandoned-looking. The kind of place that local kids would dare each other to explore. The kind of place that nobody important would notice if strange things happened inside.
James had been "recruited" through a dark web forum offering money for medical trial participation. No background checks. No questions asked. Just a location, a time, and the promise of five thousand dollars for volunteering for a clinical trial.
He’d applied using a burner identity. He’d provided false medical records (prepared by Dimitri’s forged documents team). He’d made himself look desperate, a story about medical debt, about needing quick cash, about being willing to risk his health for money.
And The Covenant had accepted him.
Of course they had. They were looking for exactly this type of person. Desperate. Willing. Unlikely to have people who would immediately report him missing.
As James approached the facility, he saw three figures emerge from the shadows.
Professional. Alert. Armed.
"You James?" the largest one asked.
"Yeah," James said, affecting the nervous energy of someone approaching something they knew was dangerous but desperately needed to do anyway.
"You understand what you’re signing up for? There’s no backing out once you’re inside. You’re committed for the duration of the trial."
"How long is the duration?" James asked.
"Depends on the trial. Could be days. Could be weeks. Could be longer." The man stepped closer, his eyes assessing. "You still want to do this?"
James nodded, letting fear show on his face. Letting them see his desperation.
"Alright. We’re going to search you. Standard protocol. If you have anything on you....phones, tracking devices, weapons....now’s the time to surrender them. If we find something during the search, you get hurt. Understand?"
"I understand," James said.
