Chapter 109: Chapter 109: A Brother-in-Law Disciplining His Little Sister-in-Law

Sophie Winslow no longer cared how much effort Julian Sterling poured into Stella Sutton. She was finally about to see the light at the end of the tunnel anyway. Her good days with Lydia were just beginning.

Before getting off work.

Sophie checked her new phone number and found several missed calls and text messages.

"Sophie, you’ve disappointed me so much. Stella is your sister. How can you be so ruthless to her? Forcing her to apologize publicly—isn’t that just a slap in her face? How is she supposed to show her face in our circles after this? What will the Sterling family think of her? How will she ever marry into their family? Did you instigate this? Is that why Mr. Preston made such a demand?

"If you persuade Mr. Preston to back off, I will still acknowledge you and care for you as your father.

"Why aren’t you answering your phone? Sophie, you can’t be this spiteful!"

Sophie hadn’t expected Isaiah Sutton to track down her new number through Helios’s email directory. He truly spoiled his mistress’s daughter to the bone. Every word in his messages was laced with emotional blackmail and reprimands, as if Sophie were the one at fault, not Stella.

Sometimes, she really felt that love made people blind. Whether it was Julian’s romantic love or Isaiah’s fatherly affection, both men favored Stella with absolute, unreserved devotion.

She had to admit that Stella was an incredibly lucky person. Like a universally adored darling, no matter what mistakes she made, there was always a line of people ready to clean up her messes. Her charm was so potent that Isaiah didn’t even care that his own biological son had been used by Stella, suffering a severe allergic reaction that nearly killed him. Instead, he was more worried about whether Stella was being "bullied" by Sophie.

Was Seth Sutton even his real son? Did his stepdaughter really mean more to him than his own flesh and blood? To ensure Stella’s marriage into the Sterling family, he was willing to push his own son’s safety to the back burner. It was absolutely mind-boggling.

Expressionless, Sophie turned off her phone screen.

She didn’t know how Julian had explained things to Stella. He probably claimed that the demand for a public apology was entirely Peter Preston’s idea. But that didn’t matter. All she wanted was for Stella to learn that her wrongdoings came with a price.

At ten o’clock that night.

Sophie received a screenshot from Peter Preston.

"She apologized, but she’s downplaying her faults and playing the victim," Peter’s message read.

Sophie glanced at the attached post.

Stella Sutton: "My younger brother has been sick lately, and I’ve been completely overwhelmed. In my frantic state of mind, I accidentally gave him the wrong medication, which led Calyx Hospital to believe their medical staff had made an error. I am here to formally apologize to Calyx Hospital and Helios. Please look at this situation objectively. On a side note, the medical care at Calyx Hospital is top-tier. My brother is only safe and sound thanks to their utmost efforts. It is a highly trustworthy hospital."

Sophie had to hand it to her. Stella’s ability to play both sides was truly impressive. After offending Calyx and being forced to apologize, she seized the opportunity to sing their praises, using the influence of her Official Account to generate goodwill and attract more patients for them. This move made it impossible for Calyx to hold a grudge against her, and it conveniently blurred the fact that she had used her own brother as a pawn.

However, industry insiders would still hear whispers of the truth. She could only fool the oblivious general public.

The next day.

Sophie went to the hospital. She first visited her mother, who was still in a coma. After staying by her side for two hours, she headed over to see her grandfather.

The hospital had contacted her recently, mentioning that her grandfather’s mind seemed to be growing more clouded. Sophie figured that since she was about to get her divorce certificate, she should gently broach the topic with him. Giving him time to process it would prevent the sudden shock from causing the old man unnecessary distress and heartache.

Truthfully, she had never understood why her grandfather liked Julian so much over the years. Even with his deteriorating memory, he always kept Julian in his thoughts.

She had specially prepared a nourishing, easily digestible herbal soup and brought it to the hospital.

Just as Sophie stepped off the elevator, she ran right into some familiar faces.

Isaiah Sutton was pushing Maeve Walsh in a wheelchair. One of Maeve’s legs seemed to be injured, and they appeared to be looking for a specific ward. This sight instantly set off alarm bells in Sophie’s head. They were on the exact same floor as her grandfather.

Isaiah spotted Sophie, his expression instantly growing complicated. "Sophie, are you here to see your grandfather?"

Sophie immediately understood. Isaiah already knew her grandfather was staying here. Her beautiful face froze with icy hostility. "What are you doing here?"

Maeve let out a cold, elegant scoff. "Checking in for my hospital stay, naturally. I just found out that your grandfather is in the room right next to mine. This works out well. Since he’s an elder and you don’t visit often, I can help take care of him for you."

Sophie heard the thinly veiled threat loud and clear. She clenched her fists. "Are you going to choose another hospital yourselves, or should I make that choice for you?"

Back then, taking advantage of her mother’s comatose state, Isaiah had ruthlessly abandoned his wife and daughter. When her grandfather had fallen ill from the shock and could no longer protect her, Isaiah had shipped Sophie off to the countryside. Her grandfather harbored a deep, burning hatred for Isaiah and Maeve. And now, they wanted to stay in the next room and interact with him?

Isaiah looked at her in disappointment. "Sophie, is that any way to speak to Miss Walsh?"

Feigning magnanimity, Maeve chimed in. "It’s fine. I imagine she’s just upset. After all, her plans fell through. She wanted to drive Stella into a corner, but Julian wouldn’t allow it. He even spent a massive fortune to smooth things over for Stella. It’s only natural that she’s taking her anger out on us."

With a dramatic sigh, Maeve continued, "Sophie, in all these years, has Julian ever been so generous with you? A man’s money goes where his heart is. A billion dollars—his love for Stella is as clear as day. I’m sure his future betrothal gifts won’t be lacking either."

Betrothal gifts. Sophie let out a mocking laugh. She was on the verge of getting her divorce certificate, and Julian was already planning out his betrothal gifts.

"Are you and your paramour going to get lost or not?" Sophie demanded, her voice low and enunciated word by word.

Isaiah’s lips trembled as he raised his voice in a furious reprimand. "You ungrateful child! Speaking to your elders like that—you’re completely out of line!"

Hearing the commotion, the head nurse emerged from the nearby station and scolded them. "This is an inpatient ward! We need quiet here. What is going on?"

Maeve immediately turned around. "I’m so sorry. Our younger daughter got into an argument with her sister and is taking it out on us elders. It’s made her father incredibly angry."

The head nurse frowned. She cast a disapproving look at Sophie, who was still suppressing her emotions. For a grown woman to infuriate her parents like this, it was truly unfilial.

Just then.

Stella Sutton and Julian Sterling stepped off the elevator.

Sophie immediately noticed their intimate posture, and a flash of mockery involuntarily filled her eyes. Her grandfather had stayed at this hospital for years, yet she had rarely seen Julian set foot here. But the moment Maeve got injured, the "future son-in-law" was attentive enough to handle everything in person.

"What’s wrong?" Stella naturally saw Sophie. However, still simmering with anger over being forced to apologize, she completely ignored her. Instead, she naturally looped her arm through Julian’s and turned to question the head nurse.

The head nurse turned around. Seeing Stella clinging to the man’s arm, she instantly assumed their relationship and said patiently, "Since you’re the older sister, you and your partner should talk some sense into her. Tell her not to yell at her parents in the hospital."
