She Kept the Baby and Ditched the Husband
Chapter 106 Get a Divorce, I Won’t Be a Mistress
Chapter 106: Chapter 106: Get a Divorce, I Won’t Be a Mistress
Sophie Winslow didn’t care whether or not Julian Sterling had left the hallway outside.
He had probably left. After all, Stella Sutton had dressed up meticulously; they likely had a romantic, passionate night planned.
She didn’t leave her room again. Being sick, she didn’t have the energy to deal with that frustrating mess. Using the landline, she called Peter Preston’s room, telling him to cancel the birthday preparations as she intended to rest and recover her strength.
That was when Peter found out she was ill.
After reassuring Peter, she asked him to inform Lucas Langley that she had lost her phone. Following that, Lucas didn’t come up to knock on her door again. Peter must have found an excuse to handle him, leaving the rest of the night entirely peaceful.
Sophie fell asleep happily, hugging the Small Leaf Red Sandalwood Heart-shaped Lock.
The next day.
She got up and walked out of the bedroom. Turning her head, she noticed that the bouquet of tulips and the tulip cake outside had all been moved back to the living room island counter, visible as soon as she stepped out. The hotel’s housekeeping manager had most likely dealt with them, assuming she still wanted them.
Sophie walked over and gently stroked the petals. Then, she picked them up and threw them into the trash can.
After going downstairs, Sophie went straight to the hotel’s indoor pool area to find the manager in charge.
"Excuse me, did you happen to find a cell phone when you cleaned the pool yesterday?" she asked.
For a hotel of this caliber, the management system was strict to the point of being abnormal, and their hygiene standards strove for perfection. Even a pool of that size was cleaned daily. When she had been bumped into the water, her phone was flung in with her.
"I apologize," the manager replied. "If our staff had found one, they would have reported it. Failing to do so results in a fine. We haven’t received any feedback from the staff on this. Could you have lost it somewhere else?"
Sophie was doubtful. She knew she couldn’t have been mistaken; she was certain it had fallen in. However, trying to find it now would cause a massive commotion. After pondering for a moment, she decided to give up. Even if she found it, the phone had been completely submerged in water. Repairing it would be time-consuming and tedious; she might as well just buy a new one.
It was just that the phone contained a lot of information related to Lydia. Photos and videos from childhood to the present, her birth certificate, and complete records of every stage of her growth were on there. Fortunately, she treasured these things like precious jewels and had backed them all up. She could still retrieve them by logging into her account on a new phone.
Sophie took one last look at the spot where she had fallen in yesterday and decided not to force the issue.
Stepping out of the pool area, she hadn’t taken more than a few steps when someone grabbed her wrist. She turned around and met Lucas Langley’s displeased, cold eyes.
His handsome face was clouded with a chill. "Sophie, aren’t you going to give me an explanation?"
His grip hurt her wrist. Frowning, she tried to pull away but couldn’t match his strength. "I lost my phone. I was sick with a fever yesterday and couldn’t contact you. Believe it or not, it’s the truth."
She didn’t owe Lucas anything and didn’t feel the need to be subservient.
Lucas finally looked Sophie up and down. Her voice was indeed a bit hoarse, and her complexion wasn’t looking too good either. He slowly furrowed his brows. "Mr. Preston wasn’t lying to me?"
Peter had called him to explain, but he had assumed it was just an excuse.
"What good would lying to you do? Would it make you invest more money?" Sophie was losing her patience. "Let go."
Her appearance wasn’t actually gentle. She had an exquisitely beautiful oval face, and her upturned eyes were breathtakingly gorgeous. Especially when she wasn’t smiling, her pear dimples vanished, making her look quite imposing.
Lucas stared at her face and her completely unapologetic attitude. It unexpectedly made him chuckle. He glanced down at her fair wrist. With a hint of regret, he slowly let go. "Since you’ve taken the trouble to explain, I have no reason to hold it against you."
In the past, Sophie wouldn’t have even bothered giving him a reason. She probably would have just told him to get lost.
Sophie shot him a weird look. She thought, "What a psycho. What is he suddenly so amused about?"
"Even though you stood me up," Lucas said, looking down at her as he rubbed the fingers that had just grasped her wrist. "I’ll still invest in the project."
This time, it was Sophie’s turn to be surprised. She had thought Lucas would put on airs or fly into a rage and back out.
"To be honest, I currently feel that the feasibility of your project isn’t very high. There are many technological barriers, but..." Lucas’s eyes darkened. "My mother has a tumor in an extremely dangerous location; she can’t even undergo surgery. If there really is a robot like this that can overcome such surgical difficulties, why not give it a shot?"
This was research and development that would benefit patients. Even if his money went down the drain, he was willing to try.
Sophie couldn’t help but re-evaluate Lucas.
"Looking at me like that, I’ll assume you’ve fallen in love with me." Lucas pulled a contract from behind his back and handed it to her. "But you’ll have to get a divorce first. I won’t be the other man."
Sophie was speechless. She thought, "He really is a psycho."
She took the contract and glanced at Lucas’s signature on the last page.
"Mr. Langley, in the future, you will be thankful for the decision you made today," she said. Sophie advocated for investment freedom, respecting everyone’s choices. She waved the contract at him and turned to leave.
Lucas raised an eyebrow as he watched her retreating figure. He thought, "This project had better succeed. If it really succeeds..."
He stared at Sophie, then raised the hand that had held hers and looked at it. His gaze deepened.
Sophie and Peter packed up and flew to Kingsford.
With Lucas’s investment contract finalized, the project now had its startup capital. The investment required for this project was not small. This three hundred million was merely a lifeline, falling far short of their overall financing goal.
For a massive project like this, research and development came down to two words: burning money. Burning money to an extreme degree.
Currently, because of the Seth Sutton incident at Calyx Hospital, the outside world had caught wind of the situation. Everyone was waiting to see what happened, meaning the financing could very well fail. Even without Seth’s issue, it would have been difficult to raise enough funds. After all, not everyone possessed a long-term investment vision.
With this incident blowing up, it was undoubtedly making matters worse. But time waited for no one.
Upon arriving in Kingsford, Sophie immediately went to buy a new phone. When she was about to get a replacement SIM card, she thought it over and ultimately decided against it, opting for a new number instead. She would treat it as making a clean break from the past.
Stepping out of the store, Sophie received a call from Ivy Hawthorne and drove straight to Helios.
Ivy was already there. Seeing her, she immediately patted the laptop she had brought and bared her teeth in a sinister grin. "Girl, I pulled an all-nighter, reviewing it frame by frame, and I finally found the evidence."
When she had found out they were trying to pin a fatal medical malpractice charge on Sophie, her blood had run cold. The tactics were simply too dirty. If Sophie was successfully framed, it wouldn’t just be a matter of losing her authorship rights; her entire professional career would be ruined. In the medical industry, this kind of "mistake" was the ultimate taboo.
"What did you find?" Sophie asked, walking over.
Peter motioned for Ivy to play the video. After seeing the crucial footage, a cold glint flashed in Sophie’s eyes.
She stood up and looked at Peter. "Notify Calyx. We can strike back now."
