ShadowBound: The Need For Power

Chapter 935: The Hunter’s Instinct

  • Next Chapter

Liam’s next step did not land.

He stopped.

Everything inside him went quiet in a way that had nothing to do with silence.

The forest continued around him, but his body no longer trusted it. His senses stretched outward, not through Shadow Sight, not through Raven, not through Myst in the ordinary sense. Something deeper moved beneath those things. Smell sharpened. Damp soil, crushed leaves, old bark, distant water, Celia’s faint trace, Asher’s heat, Raven above. Beneath all of it, something else pressed into the world with intent.

The feeling was familiar enough to name and different enough to be worse.

The first time he had felt something like it had been during the first assessment trial after the academy’s one-month training period. The Dire Lynx had stalked him then, and he had known with a clarity deeper than thought that a predator had fixed on him.

This was not that.

This was more deliberate.

More hostile.

It did not feel like something watching from the trees. It felt like something had already chosen him and begun the hunt. Not curiosity. Not wandering aggression. Selection.

A Hunter knew when it had been treated as prey.

The realization took only seconds.

Asher noticed the stop and turned. "Why did you suddenly—"

"Move."

Liam dashed past him before the question finished.

Asher’s expression sharpened instantly. He did not understand, but he did not hesitate. He matched Liam’s pace within three strides, irritation replaced by battle-readiness. "What the hell is happening?"

Liam did not answer.

He called Raven.

The shadow beast vanished from the sky.

A heartbeat later, she surged out of Liam’s shadow in a rush of black feathers and feline muscle, then shot toward Celia before Celia understood why the air had changed. Raven scooped her up in one brutal, fluid motion, lifting her onto her back without ceremony.

Celia’s shock broke through her anger. "What—again? Are you serious?"

Liam’s voice cut back before she could build into outrage. "Get above the forest. Contact Sheila. Ask for threat readings from the eastern ravine to our current location and along the route to Veyrhold. We need them immediately."

Celia froze, not because of the command itself, but because of his tone.

There was no boredom in it. No dry irritation. No tolerance for argument. It was calm, precise, and hard enough to make every complaint die before reaching her mouth.

"Stay high enough to see above the trees," Liam continued, still running. "Low enough that you are not easy prey for anything in the air. Do it now."

Celia gripped Raven’s ridges as the shadow beast gathered herself beneath her. "What did you sense?"

"Raven," Liam said. "Up."

Raven launched.

Her wings beat hard enough to scatter leaves as she broke through the canopy, carrying Celia into the open air above the forest. Celia’s stomach dropped with the sudden climb, but she forced herself to stabilize quickly, one hand gripping Raven and the other going to her communication insignia.

Below, Liam and Asher ran.

Now Asher pressed again. "Explain."

"We are being hunted."

Asher’s eyes sharpened. "By what?"

"Something stronger than anything we have encountered in Eldervale so far. Maybe more than one."

Asher did not laugh.

"What do you mean stronger?"

"I mean exactly what I said."

"How can you even tell?"

"Later." Liam kept his eyes forward, every step placed fast and clean. "For now, shut up, trust me, and keep running."

Asher’s mouth tightened, but he did not argue.

That alone said enough.

Above the treeline, Celia fought the wind, Raven’s motion, and the sudden weight of Liam’s order. The forest stretched beneath her in uneven green, the ravine behind them a dark wound in the land, Veyrhold somewhere ahead beyond too much terrain. The connection on her insignia crackled when she activated it, the signal catching and breaking in the air.

"Sheila," Celia said. "Commander Sheila, respond."

Static.

Raven croaked sharply, a harsh sound that snapped Celia’s focus back into place.

"I am trying," Celia hissed, then pressed the insignia harder. "Commander Sheila, this is Celia Roanne. Respond. Urgent."

The signal stuttered.

For a moment, she heard only broken fragments, then a thin line of connection caught.

"—lia? Celia, repeat."

Veyrhold was not quiet when Sheila’s insignia came alive.

Students moved around the central structure in organized streams now, carrying tools, records, reinforcement materials, and carefully marked supplies under Edith’s direction. Near the entrance, Felix had a temporary writing station set against a cleared stone support, the Command Log open while two students relayed findings from inside. Ariana’s group had already sent three requests from below.

Maxwell and Quenivarius had sent five, one of which Edith had rewritten because Quenivarius’s phrasing had made three students more confused than informed. Dylan had been useful enough that Sheila had not yet regretted allowing him near the reservoir work, though Edith had already recorded two verbal warnings under a neutral heading.

Sheila stood near the central structure’s lower entrance, reviewing a report from Felix when her insignia pulsed.

Celia’s voice came through rough with interference.

Sheila lifted her hand at once. "Celia? I hear you. Your task is complete. The notification came through, and I received the map reward. You all did well."

"Commander," Celia cut in, breath quick but controlled. "Liam requests immediate threat readings from the eastern ravine to our current location and along the route back to Veyrhold."

Sheila’s expression changed.

Not panic. Recognition.

Liam would not ask that through Celia unless there was a reason and time mattered.

"Understood," Sheila said.

Felix looked up from the log. Edith, a few steps away, turned at once.

Sheila activated the bracelet-like projection that had appeared on her wrist after the task completion. A magical screen unfolded before her, its surface filling with a live map of Veyrhold and the surrounding Eldervale region. Colored marks pulsed across terrain lines, ruins, forest sections, roads, water cuts, and areas still blurred by interference. A key glowed along one side.

Threat Map Key

Purple: Calamity

Blue: Apex

Red: Alpha

Orange: Major

Yellow: Minor

Sheila absorbed the hierarchy in a breath. Purple highest. Yellow lowest. Blue was not the top.

That did not make it comforting.

She expanded the region east of Veyrhold and traced the route between the ravine and the moving task group. The map responded to her focus, sharpening the terrain with a delay that felt too slow despite taking only seconds.

Then the readings appeared.

Blue.

Several of them.

They were not stationary. They were moving from the ravine’s wider region toward Liam’s group at frightening speed, not as a scattered cluster but as a hunting formation. The map did not name them. It only marked them as unregistered Realm-Touched activity, Apex-level pack behavior.

Sheila’s throat tightened.

Edith stepped closer, eyes narrowing. "Commander?"

Sheila did not look away from the map. "Celia, listen carefully. You need to get out of that area immediately. Apex-level signatures are moving toward you from the ravine route. Multiple readings. They are fast, and the map suggests pack movement."

On Raven’s back, Celia went cold.

The warning came through just as the forest below changed.

She felt it before she fully understood it: a pressure spreading beneath the treetops, heavy enough to make her fingers tighten. The wind seemed to lose its natural sound. Birds, insects, small shifting creatures, all of it thinned into a silence too complete to be absence. Below her, Liam and Asher ran harder.

Asher felt it then.

His flames sharpened around his hands without being called loudly, blue light licking close to his skin as his eyes flicked toward the forest behind them. "What the hell is that?"

Liam did not look back.

He had felt the edge of it earlier. Now the pressure had arrived fully, pressing against his instincts with the certainty of teeth. Whatever moved behind them was no longer only choosing. It was closing.

"Run," he said.

The forest behind them went quiet.

Not peaceful.

Empty in the way prey paths became empty when every smaller thing knew better than to breathe.

Asher’s blue flames tightened around his hands. Celia leaned low on Raven’s back, insignia still open to Sheila’s warning. Liam kept his eyes forward and did not waste time looking over his shoulder.

Behind them, something answered through the trees with footsteps too deep to be normal and too deliberate to be wind.
