Shadow Monarch in DC

Chapter 617: The Eyes of Heaven

Maze held Michael’s gaze for a long moment. Then she turned and walked back to the bar, with heavy footsteps.

Lucifer picked up his glass and took a slow sip.

"So. The Shadow Monarch." He set the glass down. "I’ve been watching him, it’s hard not to really. He’s made quite a mess of things, killed Darkseid’s avatar, sealed the Anti-Monitor, erased the Gentry, took on Death’s mantle, and now he’s at war with new enemies." He paused, his smile sharpening. "I have to admit, I’m impressed. He’s done more in a few years than most beings manage in an eternity."

Michael’s expression didn’t change. "He’s dangerous."

"He’s interesting." Lucifer leaned back, crossing his legs. "There’s a difference. And you’re here because Father sent you, which means he’s caught the attention of the great sliver city. Which means.." he paused, "...you’re worried."

Michael’s jaw tightened just slightly, just enough for Lucifer to notice.

"We’re not worried. We’re... concerned about certain things."

Lucifer laughed.

"Oh, concerned. That’s much better. That’s the word you use when you’re too proud to admit you’re afraid." He leaned forward, his elbows on the table. "What is it, Michael? What has the great and powerful Archangel so concerned that he would descend from his lofty perch and grace his fallen brother with a visit?"

Michael was silent for a moment.

"The Shadow Monarch is not like the others. He is not a tyrant or a conqueror, not a being of pure darkness. I understand quite well his motives, he fights for his family and this world. For the people he loves." He paused. "That makes him unpredictable, someone with that sort of power is bound to be unstable. And yet so far he has been.." he hesitated, as if the word tasted strange in his mouth, "...righteous."

Lucifer’s smile faded.

"Ah," he said quietly. "I see."

"His enemeies are not wrong to fear him," Michael continued. "He has taken the concept of Death itself and made it his own. He has created new Monarchs, given them powers that were never meant to be shared. He has defied their order for the hope of a better future." He paused. "And he has done it all for love."

Lucifer was silent for a long moment.

Then he laughed, almost sad.

"And that’s what scares you, isn’t it? Not his power. Not his armies. Not his shadows." He met Michael’s eyes. "It’s that he’s good. That he fights for something real. That he’s willing to burn the whole universe down for the people he loves." He paused. "You don’t know what to do with that do you? You never did."

Michael’s expression was unreadable. "Father wants to know what he is truly made of, what he really wants at the end of his crusade."

"He’s Death," Lucifer said simply. "The end of all things. The one certainty that even you and I cannot escape one day, but maybe it will only be you... who knows." He picked up his glass and swirled the whiskey, watching the light dance through the amber liquid. "And yet, he’s also a father and a friend. A man who built a home and a family in the middle of a war that was never his to fight." He took a sip. "He’s the most human being I’ve ever met. And he’s not human at all."

Michael studied his brother. "You like him."

Lucifer shrugged. "I find him fascinating. Which is more than I can say for most of Father’s creations." He set down his glass. "So. What does Father REALLY want?"

Michael was quiet for a moment. Then he spoke.

"I really don’t know... I was tasked to ask you about him, Father was pretty vague about him.." he paused, "...if the concept of Death should be returned to the Endless where it belongs, for example."

Lucifer’s eyes narrowed. "And what do you think?"

Michael met his gaze. "I think the Shadow Monarch is the most dangerous being on the universe right now, because of his purpose." He paused. "He will not stop and he will not compromise. He will fight until his enemies are destroyed, until True Darkseid is unmade, and when he’s done, he will stand at the top of the multiverse with nothing left to fight, and we will have to decide what to do with him."

Lucifer smiled.

"And you’re afraid that when that day comes, he’ll turn his eyes toward you."

Michael didn’t answer.

Lucifer leaned back, his smile widening.

"Good."

Michael’s eyes narrowed. "What?"

"I said good." Lucifer picked up his glass and raised it in a mock toast. "Because if the Shadow Monarch does turn his eyes toward Heaven, it will be because Heaven gave him a reason. And if Heaven gives him a reason..." he paused, his eyes gleaming with dark amusement, "...then maybe, just maybe, he’ll succeed where I failed."

Michael rose from the booth, his expression cold.

"This conversation is over."

Lucifer watched him go, his smile never fading.

"Tell Father I said hello," he called after him. "And tell him, if he wants to know what the Shadow Monarch wants, he should ask him himself. He’s a surprisingly reasonable man. For someone who commands the armies of the dead."

Michael didn’t respond. He walked out of Lux without looking back.

Maze appeared at the edge of the booth, a fresh glass of whiskey in her hand.

"Well," she said flatly. "That was interesting."

Lucifer took the glass and downed it in one gulp.

"Wasn’t it?" He set the empty glass down and looked toward the door, his expression thoughtful. "I think I like this Arthur even more now, we need to have a chat."

Maze snorted. "You just like that he’s causing problems for Heaven."

"That too." Lucifer smiled, his eyes glowing faintly in the dim light of the bar. "That too."

Earth - Metropolis

The sun was setting over Metropolis, painting the skyline in shades of gold and rose, the streets were alive wih cars honking, pedestrians chattering, the distant wail of a siren that faded as quickly as it came. It was ordinary, it was everything Michael had expected to find when he descended from Heaven.

He walked among them, unseen.

Not invisible, he was too careful for that, but he looked so ordinary that he was completely unnoticed. His suit was plain, his posture unremarkable, his face carefully neutral. He looked like any other businessman heading home after a long day, a man with somewhere to be and nothing to fear.

But his eyes saw everything.

The first conversation caught him by surprise.

Two young women sat on a bench outside a coffee shop, their laptops open, their coffees cooling beside them. One of them was scrolling through her phone, her expression shifting from boredom to excitement in the span of a heartbeat.

"Oh my god," she said. "Did you see this? Another gate cleared. No casualties."

Her friend leaned over, scanning the screen. "That’s the third one this week. The Shadow Lanterns must be working overtime... I heard they are clearing dungeons on their own."

"The Shadow Lanterns?" The first woman laughed. "Honey, that’s the Shadow Monarch’s people. They’re not just working overtime, they’re everywhere. My cousin told me they saved her entire guild last month. Just appeared out of nowhere, killed the boss, and vanished before anyone could say thank you."

"I heard he doesn’t even ask for payment or take the gates loot. The Shadow Monarch, I mean. He just... helps."

"I heard he’s terrifying."

"Yeah, but he protects us. That’s what matters."

Michael stood frozen, listening.

He walked on.

In Gotham City, the Bowery was not a beautiful place. It was dark and broken and filled with the kind of people who had learned to expect the worst from the world. But even here, in the shadow of crumbling buildings and flickering streetlights, Michael found something he had not anticipated.

A group of teenagers stood on a corner, their clothes patched, their faces smudged with dirt. They were laughing, passing a phone between them, pointing at the screen with the kind of excitement that seemed out of place in a place like this.

"Look at this!" one of them said a boy with a crooked smile and a bruise on his cheek. "The Shadow Monarch’s dragon just took down a gate boss in like, two seconds. Two seconds. That thing was supposed to be S-rank!"

"Which dragon?" another asked.

"I don’t know... The shadow one? The one that showed up during the mecha dragons attack."

"Man, I wish I could see it in person. Imagine having a dragon like that."

"I’d settle for one of his shadow soldiers," a third teen said. "Did you hear about what they did in Central City? A whole building was about to collapse on a bunch of civilians, and then boom, shadows everywhere, holding it up until everyone got out. And then they just disappeared. No one even got a chance to thank them."

"Man, imagine being that powerful and still caring about regular people like us... I want to be like him."

The teens fell silent, their expressions thoughtful.

Michael walked on.

In Central City, The park was quiet, lit by the soft glow of streetlamps and the distant lights of the city. A couple sat on a bench, holding hands, watching the stars begin to appear in the darkening sky.

"I remember when the robot dragons attacked. We were in the middle of it, remember? Those things came out of the sky, and we thought we were going to die. And then the shadows appeared. Thousands of them. They fought those monsters like it was nothing." He paused. "I never saw him. The Shadow Monarch. He didn’t come down and give a speech or anything. But his shadows saved us. They saved everyone... this is how we got to be here, alive and enjoying the stars."

"I wish I could meet him," the woman said quietly. "Just once. Just to say thank you."

"Maybe someday."

"Maybe."

Michael stood beneath a nearby tree, listening, his hands clasped behind his back, his expression unreadable.
