Seeing Crime Scenes in My Sleep
Chapter 230 - 224: Birds of a Feather Flock Together
Amidst her hysterical questioning, the mother-in-law clutched her head with one hand and pointed a trembling finger at the ambulance in the distance.
"The... on the ambulance... Xiao Hua, go check! Why isn’t it moving?"
When Cai Xiaohua heard what her mother-in-law said, her mind went blank, her legs gave out, and she almost collapsed on the ground.
"Kang... Kangkang, Kangkang!"
Cai Xiaohua’s lips quivered for a moment before she let out a wretched scream and staggered toward the ambulance.
"Hurry up and drive! What are you all just standing there for!" Cai Xiaohua rushed to the back, peered inside, and desperately grabbed a nearby nurse.
"We’d love to, but somebody punctured the tires."
In that instant, all the words caught in Cai Xiaohua’s throat. The kitchen knife in her hand felt searingly hot.
"Is the car here yet?" a doctor administering first aid nearby called out, turning his head.
"Almost here!"
In the end, some helpful bystanders drove them to the hospital. Shortly after, the bureau received a call and began investigating who had slashed the ambulance’s tires.
"Make way, make way!"
Doctors and nurses pushed a gurney rapidly in their direction, followed by Cai Xiaohua’s wailing family.
Jiang Li watched this scene with a dumbfounded expression. ’Isn’t that the woman who was just cursing everyone and everything?’
’What’s going on?’
Tang Wen saw Jiang Li staring blankly to the side. Remembering what the chief and the others had decided, she approached to greet her.
"Miss Jiang."
Jiang Li, seeing Tang Wen appear, nodded at her and glanced toward the commotion in confusion.
"What’s going on?"
"Well, Cai Xiaohua’s mother-in-law and child were also in the elevator, and they got into an argument.
The child isn’t doing well, and then, at the worst possible moment, someone slashed the ambulance’s tires."
Jiang Li’s mouth fell open in surprise. "A boy?" ’There was only one little terror in the elevator. Don’t tell me...’
Tang Wen nodded before a colleague called her away.
The corner of Jiang Li’s mouth twitched. ’Talk about what goes around, comes around.’
’Come to think of it, I guess that family belongs together.’
’I just wonder how that pregnant woman is doing.’
Jiang Li made her way to the nurses’ station.
"Hi, excuse me. A pregnant woman was brought in a little while ago. Do you know how she’s doing?"
"Ah, Jiang Li. She was a bit hypoxic, but the baby’s safe. Is she a friend of yours?"
The nurse greeted Jiang Li warmly. Jiang Li had been here so many times, always with police officers in tow, which suggested she was someone important.
"Thanks, I was just asking."
Once she had her answer, Jiang Li slowly walked back to her room.
As she reached her door, a loud argument erupted from the room next door.
"How could you be so careless with our child? If anything happens to Kangkang, I’ll never forgive you!
WAHHHH, why is my life so miserable? My new car is gone, I got fined, and now my son is hurt too."
Jiang Li glanced toward the room. ’What a coincidence,’ she thought. ’Thank god I have a private room.’
"How is this my fault? Who knew the elevator would suddenly malfunction?
And what about those other people? They’re all grown-ups. Why pick a fight with a child?!
He just accidentally bumped into that woman, and they made such a big deal out of it. And that guy is a total psycho! He must have some kind of rage disorder!
To think he would be so rough with Kangkang... My poor grandson!"
Jiang Li sat on the sofa, munching on an apple while listening to the argument next door.
’There should be security cameras in the elevator. I remember one guy did seem really unstable. If he really does have some mental illness, then I guess it takes one to handle another.’
On his phone, Yu Huannian found a combat training camp run by some retired soldiers.
He was strong but lacked technique. He needed to train.
He contacted them and signed up. When he looked up, the argument next door was still going.
It didn’t bother him, though. He’d been hearing sounds like that his whole life.
"Hey, want to get a different room?"
"No, it’s fine."
As soon as Jiang Li spoke, the room next door fell silent, replaced by the sound of Tang Wen’s voice.
"Ms. Cai, the security footage shows you slashing the ambulance’s tires. Are you aware that’s a crime?"
Jiang Li froze mid-bite. ’Well, this is dramatic.’
"I... I..."
Cai Xiaohua stared at the police officers in her room, sputtering, unable to get a word out.
Cai Xiaohua’s husband was so enraged he slapped her right across the face. "You must be insane!
If anything happens to Kangkang, I’ll divorce you!"
The fight next door raged on, and Jiang Li listened with rapt attention. It only quieted down when she heard the sounds of Tang Wen and her colleagues leading Cai Xiaohua away.
Jiang Li got up to wash her face and get ready for bed. She’d be discharged in another two days.
The first thing Jiang Li saw when she woke up was a message from Wu Ming. They were already on the plane.
She sat up, tugging at the back of her hospital gown. She glanced at the scar cream on the nightstand but left it untouched. ’With so many scars already, what’s one more?’
"Hey, I’m heading over now."
Yu Huannian’s voice came from outside the room. Jiang Li called back in acknowledgment, her thoughts turning to that phone call.
A few seconds later, she stood up. ’Whatever comes, I’ll face it.’
She went to Luo Jingheng’s room and sat down, looking at her phone. It was only then that she saw a message from Ji Qinghe.
Cai Xiaohua was being held responsible for yesterday’s incident. Because she had slashed the tires, the rescue was delayed, and now her son was in a vegetative state.
Jiang Li scrolled through her messages, pausing when she saw Lu Xingye’s profile picture.
’She hadn’t seen him since yesterday.’
’Did he leave on a mission?’
Jiang Li opened their chat history and scrolled up. Her eyes landed on a message where he’d sent her a file, and an idea suddenly struck her.
’Don’t tell me he went to investigate my case.’
Jiang Li shot to her feet. ’A monster like Kun Sha is completely inhuman. How could his men be any better?’
She immediately tried to call Lu Xingye, but the call wouldn’t connect.
She had no choice but to call Ji Qinghe. "Sister Qinghe, do you know where Lu Xingye went?"
"Xingye? He told me he was going to a town to check on something. He won’t be around for a few days. What’s wrong?"
Jiang Li tightened her grip on her phone. "Is it because of my case?"
Ji Qinghe put down her file. "Jiang Li, Kun Sha targeting you is our next big break."
Now that Jiang Li was right under their noses, as long as they kept an eye on her, they were bound to pick up a trail.
If Kun Sha dared to show himself, they would bring him to justice and avenge their fallen comrades.
"What town did he go to?"
"Jiang Li, you’re in no condition to go out right now," Ji Qinghe said, cutting off that line of thought.
’Never mind her injuries; there were too many people watching her out there. What would they do if something went wrong?’
Since Ji Qinghe wouldn’t tell her, Jiang Li had no choice but to hang up. As she did, she felt a pair of eyes on her.
She looked up and met Luo Jingheng’s gaze.
She stared at him intently. ’His father is in that same place... wouldn’t he know everything about Kun Sha’s movements?’
’If I asked him... would he tell me?’
Luo Jingheng continued to meet her stare. As long as her eyes didn’t move, neither did he.
"Food’s ready," Yu Huannian’s voice called from the kitchen, shattering their silent standoff.
