Kieran’s body convulsed one final time as Penelope poured everything she had left into the working, her hands trembling around her staff, blood from the cut above her eyebrow mixing with sweat as she forced the last threads of dark magic out of her brother’s body.

He screamed, a raw, human sound now, no longer doubled or hollow and then went still, chest rising and falling in shallow, exhausted breaths, his eyes fluttering open a pale, ordinary brown for the first time in what felt like an eternity.

"Penelope," he rasped, voice cracking. "What did I—"

"Later," she said, already turning away from him, gathering the last dregs of her strength for what came next. "Rest. You’re free now."

She found the source of the dark magician’s remaining power at the edge of the platform where Mavros had fallen, not gone entirely, some final tether of his essence still clinging stubbornly to the fading remnants of the spell, refusing to release its hold even in death.

With a final, furious surge of her staff’s light, she severed it completely, extinguishing whatever remained of him from the world for good.

The moment the dark power fully vanished, Eleanore’s screaming finally stopped.

But the silence didn’t bring relief. Above her, flickering weakly in the air, the last remnant of the system finally sputtered to life one final time, not with a quest, not with a task, just three words hanging fractured and dim against the night sky.

|| And They lived Happily Ever After ||

It flickered, before shattering into nothing, gone forever.

A heartbeat later, a sharp, tearing pain lanced through Eleanore’s belly, and she doubled forward with a gasp, both hands pressing hard against the small, three-month curve of her stomach as though she could hold everything inside her together by sheer force of will alone.

"No—no, no, no—" Her voice cracked into something desperate, terrified, entirely different from the pain of the extraction moments before. "Caelestis, something’s wrong, I can feel it, I can feel it slipping, please—"

"What’s happening?" Caelestis’s face went white, hands hovering helplessly over her stomach, utterly unequipped for a danger he couldn’t fight with a blade. "Eleanore, talk to me, what do you feel—"

"Our child—our child is dying," Eleanore sobbed, the words tearing out of her raw and broken, some deep, instinctive certainty settling cold and absolute in her chest. "I can feel it, Caelestis, please, I can’t lose our child, not after everything, please—"

Penelope was already moving, dragging herself across the platform on legs that barely held her weight, staff serving as her only support, her own strength visibly nearly spent from severing Kieran’s possession and Mavros’s lingering magic in the same breath. She sank down beside Eleanore without hesitation.

"Please," Eleanore begged, gripping her hand with what little strength she had left, pain and terror both raw in her voice. "Please, save my child. I don’t care what happens to me, just save my baby, please—"

"Look at me," Penelope said, voice steady despite the exhaustion straining every word. "I am not letting either of you go tonight. Do you understand me? Not after everything you’ve both already survived."

She placed one of her hands against Eleanore’s stomach, closing her eyes, and this time the working came harder, slower, her staff’s glow flickering unsteadily as she poured the last true reserves of her strength into it.

Eleanore felt the sharp, tearing pain begin to ease, replaced by something warm and fragile and uncertain, and she held her breath, hardly daring to hope, watching Penelope’s face contort with the strain of holding the working together.

"Come on," Penelope whispered, more to the child than to anyone else present, sweat beading along her brow despite the cool night air. "Come on, little one, stay with us. Your mother isn’t done fighting for you yet, and neither am I."

The seconds stretched unbearably long, Caelestis gripping Eleanore’s hand so tightly it ached, both of them frozen in terrified silence as Penelope’s magic pulsed weaker, then stronger, then weaker again, fighting for purchase against whatever damage the extraction had caused.

Then, all at once, Eleanore felt it—a small, unmistakable flutter of movement beneath Penelope’s hands, faint but steady, like a heartbeat finally settling back into its proper rhythm.

Penelope collapsed backward with a ragged, exhausted breath, staff clattering from her grip. "Your stable," she managed, voice barely above a whisper. "Weak, but stable, fighting, Eleanore. She’s a fighter, just like her mother."

Eleanore broke into open, overwhelming sobs, one hand pressed protectively over her stomach, the other still locked tight in Caelestis’s grip. "Thank you," she gasped. "Thank you, thank you—"

"Rest," Penelope said weakly, her own eyes already fluttering shut with exhaustion. "Both of you. The war’s over now."

It was Stella’s voice that broke through the moment a few minutes later, calling out across the wreckage with desperate relief, Hael close behind her, both of them soaked through from the storm that had finally broken but very much alive, very much safe. Stella reached them first, dropping to her knees beside Eleanore with a strangled sob at the sight of her, pale and shaking but breathing, alive.

"You’re alive," Stella breathed. "You’re both alive."

"Barely," Eleanore said, a watery, exhausted laugh escaping her despite everything. "But yes. We made it. All three of us."

Hael knelt beside Caelestis, gripping his shoulder tightly, both men wordlessly acknowledging everything they’d feared and everything they’d somehow, against every odd, managed to survive intact.

Above them, the storm clouds finally began to break apart, the first pale light of dawn creeping over the ruined battlefield, illuminating the small, exhausted, impossibly grateful circle of people gathered together in the wreckage of everything that had tried to tear them apart.

Caelestis pressed his forehead gently against Eleanore’s, both hands still trembling as they rested over the small, precious life still growing safely beneath her palm. "Our child going to be alright," he whispered, disbelief and gratitude tangled together in his voice.

"He is a fighter," Eleanore whispered back, tears streaming freely now, though nothing about them carried pain anymore—only relief, only love, only the fierce, unshakable certainty that whatever came next, the three of them would face it together. "Just like his father."

"Her father, you mean?" He says, and Eleanore chuckles at that.

The sun rose fully over the battlefield, casting warm light over a family finally, fully whole, Eleanore let herself be gathered into Caelestis’s arms and allowed herself, for the first time in longer than she could remember, to simply exist in the quiet, hard-won peace of a story finally, completely her own.
