Sapphyra [Adult Superhero Progression]
Chapter 155
Barbie was silent. Not that I would let her talk with my tail wrapped tightly around her body. I even gagged her with it, just to make sure.
Without her fucking shit up with the Monolith, it had stopped attacking…or I guess falling on the city. Now it was just locked in place, hovering above Cyran with half of its body missing. I’ll deal with that in a minute.
For now, I had two problems to deal with. The first one’s scent just made its appearance, not bothering to hide his location.
I landed in front of Cyran's new jail and met Voss at the door. His eyes softly glowed as chains from his body wrapped around the target of my hunt. Zeke.
“Are you finally back to normal?” Voss asked as Zeke growled at me from behind him.
“No…but it’ll have to do for now.” I nodded towards one of the cell doors. “Open it. I’m tossing her in there until further notice.”
Voss tilted his head, raising an eyebrow like he’s waiting for the punchline to this joke. But I'm not laughing. After enough silence—and a very pissed off face from me—he gets the message loud and clear.
“As you command, boss lady.” Voss snaps his fingers and the cell door opens. I quickly toss Barbie in there like yesterday’s garbage, wiping my hands clean of her. I tried not to look at her slightly smug face as she leaned against the gray cell wall.
“Can I ask why—”
“She’s the reason the city almost got flattened.” I cut off his question, not really in the mood for a Q and A.
“Well…shit.” Voss scratches his head and leans back in his seat. He looks comfortable in that chair, like it was made for him. All he’s missing now is a box of hot, glazed donuts.
My stomach growled, pissing me off further. It’s no fun being hangry, especially when the world is constantly being threatened.
“If you’re hungry, I got some leftovers from a drop off earlier. Fresh vegetables from two little capps. They were kind of cute honestly.”
Silla and Corre. It couldn’t have been anyone else.
“Wait. You just let them walk in here? What happened to all the animosity between descendants and capps?”
“Hmph.” He pulled out an apple and bit into it, smacking his lips with each crunch of his jaw.
I’m gonna smack him. I don’t kill but I will absolutely smack the shit out of people annoying me on purpose—especially after today.
“They said they were your friends. Well, you and Guy. Once I figured out they weren’t lying…well, why the hell would I turn down free fresh food?”
That is a good point.
“Damn. Here I was thinking that you all handled your disagreements without my intervention.”
Voss rolled his eyes. “Yeah, I doubt that.”
I narrowed my eyes on him. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
“It means you’re the superhero and the negotiator. Hell, you have more job hats on than Rupert did.”
Pursing my lips, I walked over and grabbed a peach from the basket he’d placed on top of his desk. Tasting that sweet, juicy first bite made me lose my shit. No decorum here. I ate the whole thing—pit and all in one bite. And then the second peach…and the third.
“Should you be eating that fast?!” Voss asked, tentatively reaching for the basket.
I didn’t mean to and I’m absolutely blaming the pregnancy but I roared at him. A couple pieces of fruit hit his face and he snatched his hand back like he’d touched a hot stove by accident.
“Okay, okay! Damn. Note to self: never get in between a pregnant dragon and their food.”
When I’d eaten everything, basket and all, I burped and rubbed my belly gently.
“I’m still hungry.”
Voss held his hands up, palms spread, eyes wide like a deer caught in headlights.
“Don’t look at me! I’m not food. Here.” He snapped his fingers again and the massive doors behind him opened up.
“If you’re going to eat something, go eat your family or something. Your husband and son are getting on my nerves.”
I blinked slowly, making sure I heard him right.
“You’re just…letting me back there?”
He nodded. “Yep. I’ll even let you into their cell. I figure it’s better you use the time you have right now versus waiting for their trial. Besides,” Voss stood, leading me towards their cell down the grand metallic hallway. “You look like you need your mate.”
As I followed him, my thoughts drifted towards Guy and Erek. Wyatt was technically my mate but not naturally, yet for most of my life he was all that mattered to me. In some ways he still does.
But my heart has grown bigger now.
I glanced at Zeke, trying my best to ignore the odd stare in his amber eyes.
“What are you going to do with him?”
“Lock him in a cell for the time being. Why?” Voss said, shrugging like it was just another Tuesday.
I actually don’t know what day it is, so it might be Tuesday for all I know.
“Just wondering. Technically he’s family and he’s younger too.” Although now that I really look at him, his baby face wasn’t matching his eyes.
“Yeah well, family or not? He tried breaking in here to talk to the rest of his family. Despite me telling him that wasn’t okay, he wouldn’t take no for an answer.”
I frowned and shook my head. “Well just be careful, okay? Barbie is his mate so keeping them in the same prison is probably a bad idea.” Voss nodded and carried on down the hallway.
When we stopped in front of a large cell, I was impressed at how much nicer than the last one it was. They had two beds on opposite sides of the room and…that was about it. Open toilet in the middle and gray walls just like every other jail cell I’ve seen.
I gripped the bars and sighed as my eyes landed on my husband. He lay in his bed, eyes closed, hands clasped behind his head. He’d neglected his grooming, something he normally hates.
“Wyatt?” I asked, finding my voice.
“Yes, Sapphyra?” It felt odd hearing him use my name. And he still wasn’t looking at me.
“We need to talk.” I nod towards Voss and he opens the cell doors but as soon as I walk in, Wyatt holds up a hand.
“No.”
“No?” My heart dropped.
His eyes finally opened and very little of the man I loved was left. Instead, all I got from him was a cold weariness in his dark amber eyes.
“If we’re talking, it has to be with you several feet away from me.”
They softened just a moment as he said words I never thought I’d hear from my obsessed lover.
”Sapphyra, I’m sorry. I can’t be next to you right now.”
