Guy

“I’m sorry, Angel. I almost didn’t make it in time.” I smiled at Sapph, while holding Bayani’s blade in my bare hand.

The blade he used was wrapped in dragonsbane and it burned through my body, demanding I submit. But I refused.

He almost took the woman I loved away from me, from the world. That was fucking unacceptable.

With a roar, I lashed out at him with my tail. He saw it coming but he moved to dodge it. My arm hung limply at my sides, fingers gone numb from contact with dragonsbane.

“Are you alright?” I used my good arm to help move her. She was still stunned from whatever he said earlier or maybe it was the way he said it. At least, I thought it was from his words. But then I noticed the broken pieces of someone on the ground. A woman I’d only seen one time before.

The trial. Sapph’s memory of her sister, Anais.

“Oh goddess, Sapph, I’m so sorry.”

“For what?” Her eyes were wide open as she stared down at her sister. Was it really her or just another trick by Barbie? I wish I knew. But either way, something about her death was working through Sapphyra.

“She was your sister…please don’t tell me you forgot about your sister?”

Nothing. Not even a tail flick.

“She used to braid your hair and she did that twin puffball for you? The one you wanted when you were a little girl?”

Her hand twitched and hope surged within me. Could she be remembering? I’d better keep going.

“Look, I’m not gonna pretend to know much about your sister but I know that rat bastard that just attacked you is your dad, Bayani.” Her hands curled into fists, trembling with rage.

“And he won’t stop torturing you until you and everyone you love is dead.” I hated saying those words but she needed to hear them. Anything to get her back to her old self.

She stood up on shaky legs and…slapped both sides of her face at once.

“What the fuck? Are you okay?” I whispered. Who does that?

She turned to me with a small smile. “Bout as well as can be. But yes, thank you Citi…what was your name again?” She paused, eyes searching mine like they held a secret only she could see.

“It’s Guy. Guy Dynamo.”

Sapph turned away from me and covered her mouth, stifling a giggle.

I blushed and rolled my eyes, hiding the heartbreak as best as I could. “You love that name.”

“It’s…unique.” She softly admitted, locking eyes with me. For just a second I saw her, the old Sapph, coming to reach out to me.

But then the air around us shifted and we both moved before it happened. Bayani had brandished a second blade and slashed towards both of us. Sapph was amazing, she kept up with his movements, dodging him like it was nothing.

Me on the other hand? Not so lucky.

“Fuck!”

He got me. White hot pain tore through my soul as he slashed one of the most sensitive parts a dragon could have: my wing. The membrane that allowed me to fly, in between vertebrae, was ripped through. Normally I’d heal fast but his blade is wrapped in my one weakness.

Which means he was definitely out for the kill, just like I’d thought.

I hate being right.

“Guy! Hold on!” She called out to me but I knew it wouldn’t matter.

This guy was moving like a demon and as fast as either of us was, we couldn’t outmaneuver him.

So we had to outthink him. What would Wyatt do?

Wait. Watch. Assess and strike. Seems like the thing to do but those aren’t Wyatt’s words. They were grandpa’s.

That’s right, I’m not just a dragon, I’m also a soldier.

“Sapph, let’s go back to back.” She raised a brow, questioning me only for a moment. When I took up a boxing stance, that’s when she moved. Her back was pressed against mine.

“Wait and watch.” I mumbled just low enough for her to hear me.

She didn’t move a muscle. We both listened for the movements that followed his strikes.

Another pair of slashes. This time both of them at me. Sapph moved me around, blocking his blade with her scaled forearm. He moved out of the way of my tail again but this time I noticed something different.

His backstep settled on the ground for three seconds far too long. Three seconds, that’s all the time we would have to step in and take advantage of him.

“Sapph.”

“Yes?” she answered immediately.

“Did you see it when he broke away this time?” I kept my voice low and the plan as vague as possible, hoping she would pick up on it. I hadn’t noticed that her forearm’s scales were falling away, leaving bloody pools in their wake.

Shit.

“Yes. I saw it. He’s still faster than us both.” Her voice was still steady despite being injured and her wounds were healing faster than mine at least. The blood had already stopped for her but I still didn’t have any feeling in my arm.

“I know. But he can’t dodge everything at once, right?”

Her back straightened with that acknowledgment. Both of our tails coiled briefly around each other and she gasped as something hot and familiar ran through our spines.

A memory flashed through my mind: the day we attacked Rupert together. We were in sync like we’d been fighting since diapers.

The mate bond. It was still there!

“Right. Just say when, Cit…I mean, Guy.” I could hear the grin in her voice.

My Sapph was still fighting back and every breath we took together, brought her closer to me.

“Close your eyes.” It was risky but not being able to see was a constant trick grampa taught us. It forces your other senses to kick into overdrive.

Like your hearing, for example.

Soft footsteps, like rain drops against leaves, fell all around us.

He was watching us too. Waiting for the moment to strike.

I gave it to him. Moving just a couple inches away from her, an opening he could exploit.

The wind moved, he was rushing towards us again. This time I could hear his blade slicing through the air.

Just when I smelled the steel of his blade right against my nose, I moved slightly to the left. He snipped some of my hair and tried dodging but my tail shot out, not to grab his ankle but to trip him up.

Of course he jumped over it. And he didn’t see Sapph’s tail aiming for his chest until it was too late.

She’d strung him up like a butcher does a cow, piercing his chest with her tail in a loop.

He coughed up blood as his mask fell away. He looked like a very angry version of Sapphyra, minus the pink hair and blue eyes.

“Damn beast. Why must I always lose to a devil like you?!” Bayani barked out, foaming at the mouth. “If I had known what you would have become, I would have killed you in the womb and made sure you stayed dead!”

My eyes widened as tears rolled down Sapph’s rounded cheeks. Her throat quivered like it struggled to swallow that man’s bullshit.

How long had he been feeding her all this hatred?

“You’re…wrong.” She whispered. “You’re fucking wrong because I’m a hero!” Her voice rose and she stepped forward, placing a hand over her chest.

Her uniform started shifting back into the familiar black and pink that I’d come to love. But just as she got within striking distance of her father, Barbie appeared in front of him in a flash of bright blue light.

Was the wishboard letting her do this?

“Ah, I see you’ve got my gift.” The blonde bitch gave Sapph the most devilish grin I’d ever seen.

“Go on then, hero.” She fanned her arm out in front of Bayani. “Take out the bad guy!”

Sapph’s uniform turned back white and pink, shattering my hope that she’d fought her way back to me.
