Sage of Humanity
Chapter 2308 - 2306: Picking Up a Companion
The Star Abyss Heir's competition had reached this point, and if Lu Ye truly wanted to find a companion, he certainly couldn't be careless. The companion needed a certain level of strength.
If not at the Peak Dao Fusion, then at least the 9th Order.
Only then, during combat, would they not become a burden.
Previously, among the more than fifty thousand Harmonization Practitioners, very few female cultivators had reached this level of cultivation. Lu Ye estimated that at full count, there wouldn't be more than a few hundred, certainly not over a thousand.
It was thus quite challenging to find a suitable companion under such conditions.
Actually, that Junior Sister Shuang was quite suitable. Though her temperament was a bit cold, her strength was sufficient. If Ning Gu could be killed, Lu Ye was confident he could convince Junior Sister Shuang to agree to team up with him.
After all, she and Ning Gu were only temporarily teamed up and didn't know each other before; it couldn't be said that they shared any sentimental ties or bonds.
In the days that followed, Lu Ye first tended to his injuries for a while and then continued to roam, also searching for potential partners.
Unfortunately, there wasn't much success.
A month passed in a blur.
On a piece of floating land, Lu Ye sat cross-legged, drifting with the currents, counting his Star Abyss coins.
Since the start of the Star Abyss Heir's struggle, about three months had passed. Yet, he only had around two hundred Star Abyss coins.
This demonstrated the difficulty of obtaining these coins since they could only be earned by defeating enemies; they couldn't be looted from others.
Each Star Abyss coin represented a slain Harmonization Practitioner.
He didn't know how efficient others were at slaying enemies, but he definitely wasn't among the least productive, though certainly not outstanding either.
Those at the Peak Dao Fusion, traveling in groups, surely surpassed him in slaying efficiency.
In a mysterious space similar to a treasure vault, there was a treasure he wanted to exchange for, but it required five hundred Star Abyss coins. Lu Ye wasn't sure if he could gather enough before the competition ended.
He would do his best. If he couldn't gather enough, there was nothing he could do. The Star Abyss coins were never wasted. At worst, he could exchange them for a batch of Dao Bones from the vault, all left behind by Harmonization Practitioners after their deaths. The Dao force they contained couldn't be compared to those from the Enter the Path cultivators.
While counting, Lu Ye suddenly turned his head to look in a certain direction, from which the sounds of battle came.
He put away the Star Abyss coins and swiftly made his way towards the source of the commotion.
A conflict meant cultivators were present; as long as he killed them, he could gain Star Abyss coins!
Soon, Lu Ye arrived at the site of the battle. He wasn't too late, but by now, the conflict was nearing its end.
The combatants were two female cultivators; one appeared quite injured and weak, while the other seemed unharmed.
However, the injured female cultivator held an absolute advantage, while the unharmed one retreated step by step, struggling to hold on.
Such a situation was undoubtedly due to the considerable disparity in strength between them.
Lu Ye also noticed a Star Abyss coin quietly floating not far from their battleground, indicating that a cultivator had died there.
Although unaware of the full story, Lu Ye quickly deduced the situation from what he observed. It seemed two companions of the Harmonization Practitioner level had encountered the severely injured female cultivator and saw an opportunity to strike. Unexpectedly, even injured, she was not someone they could contend with.
The male cultivator was killed, leaving only the female cultivator desperately supporting herself.
The opponent seemed to have the intention to retreat, and indeed, allowing her to leave while severely injured was the best choice. Yet, the injured female had no such intention. She seemed determined to eliminate her opponent, much to the latter's dismay.
Having watched for a moment, Lu Ye's eyes lit up.
This was like having a pillow delivered right when he needed sleep! He had been considering finding a partner but had no suitable candidates so far.
Yet here was one appearing right before him; he couldn't let this opportunity pass!
From his observations, this injured female cultivator had quite good cultivation. Perhaps not as strong as Junior Sister Shuang but surely of the 9th Order Dao Fusion. Such cultivation, combined with a Dao soldier, could exert strength surpassing two hundred Daos.
More importantly, she was of the human race!
On the Baiyu Platform, Lu Ye had noticed that while the human race had a considerable presence among the more than fifty thousand Harmonization Practitioners, they weren't as numerous as one might imagine.
Given the choice, Lu Ye would certainly prefer to collaborate with the human race, feeling an innate bond with them.
Having made up his mind, Lu Ye stepped boldly into the battlefield between the two women.
The sudden appearance startled both combatants, who each readied themselves in vigilance. Lu Ye swung his long blade, the saber light shining brilliantly.
A moment later, the battle ended with the death of the weaker female cultivator.
Standing with his blade, Lu Ye turned to look at the pale-faced female cultivator, whose expression was extremely solemn. The previous scene had made her acutely aware of Lu Ye's strength. If she weren't injured, she might hold her ground against such a foe, but right now she was badly hurt, with her Dao force in disarray, unable to even unleash half her usual strength.
How could she possibly be a match for Lu Ye?
Would she die here?
Well, so be it!
In her heart, she thought, showing a resolute expression on her face, as she shook her longsword, the sword belonging to her Dao soldier seemed to flow like liquid, enveloping her entire body, and she instantly transformed into an extremely sharp sword light that charged at Lu Ye.
This temper... a bit intense!
Lu Ye was amused yet helpless. He was just about to ask if the other party wanted to team up, but before he could open his mouth, this woman had already taken on a stance as if she intended to perish together with him.
Lu Ye didn't understand what this secret technique was called, but judging by its momentum, it was obviously the woman's last desperate effort!
Since that's the case, he might as well test her strength.
With the longsword in hand, the wheel turned like the moon, and he fiercely slashed down!
At the moment the saber light and sword flashes collided, it was like a mini solar explosion, the dazzling brilliance could be seen clearly even hundreds of thousands of miles away.
The radiance dispersed, and Lu Ye looked at the woman quietly floating before him with a speechless face.
He had tested the opponent's strength, which indeed met his requirements; teaming up with her wouldn't be a burden.
But why did she pass out all of a sudden?
The female cultivator's face was pale as paper, and her blood had dyed her clothes red. Judging from this situation, she had already been severely injured before this battle, and in such a state, she executed a powerful secret technique, naturally, she couldn't endure.
The woman's appearance was beautiful, her figure was graceful, and her curves exquisite. Due to her injuries, her clothes were somewhat ragged, revealing some white skin, yet she lay unconscious before Lu Ye, unaware.
And because she was unconscious, the longsword that had transformed into liquid and enveloped her had reverted to its original form.
With malicious intent, this female cultivator would likely suffer some cruel and inhumane humiliation.
Lu Ye merely gathered his strength, wrapped up the female cultivator and her Dao soldier, collected two Star Abyss coins, and swept her away to a secluded place to settle down.
After more than a day, while meditating to adjust his breath, Lu Ye suddenly opened his eyes and looked at the female cultivator lying not far away and said, "You're quite injured, but your foundation is intact, so with some recuperation, you should be fine. But physical injuries are easy to recover from; psychological scars are up to you. If you don't want to live, I can fulfill that wish now."
When the female cultivator was unconscious, Lu Ye had examined her injuries.
He didn't know what the female cultivator had encountered before, but during the examination, he realized she had some issues with her mindset, seemingly having suffered a severe blow, carrying an aura of desolation.
This was likely why she desperately executed that secret technique, wanting to perish together with him.
At that final moment, she didn't intend to survive.
But if she truly didn't want to live, why did she engage in combat with others? Wouldn't letting someone kill her serve the same purpose?
Lu Ye couldn't figure it out, but this was ultimately someone else's matter, and he wasn't about to inquire.
To him, she was a potential companion for pairing up. If she was willing, then it would be a joyful outcome; if not, he could still get a Star Abyss coin.
Even though they were both from the human race, in such an environment, Lu Ye had no trace of sympathy.
The woman slowly opened her eyes; she had awakened earlier. After secretly examining herself and confirming she hadn't suffered any violation or other misfortune, she felt relieved.
Though her heart was desolate, there were still some things she wished to avoid.
The recovery ability of Dao Fusion was remarkable. Within a day, the woman had recuperated considerably. She slowly sat up and then walked straight away.
Lu Ye blinked in surprise. What did this mean, leaving just like that?
After all, he could be considered her savior; in that situation, even if Lu Ye didn't kill her but left her there, her fate would have been dire.
Not expressing gratitude is one thing, but leaving without saying a word is excessive.
He hesitated for a moment but ultimately didn't chase after her; it was just a Star Abyss coin after all; if she left, so be it.
But what surprised him was that moments later, the woman actually returned. Only then did Lu Ye realize what she had been doing, evidently having found a place to change her clothes because they were previously damaged.
Though her face was still pale, her appearance was much improved.
"Thank you, Fellow Daoist. How should I address you?" the woman gently spoke.
Lu Ye gave his name.
The woman nodded, "Song Weiwei."
This was undoubtedly her name.
"Fellow Daoist, are you alone?" Song Weiwei asked again, ever since she had seen Lu Ye, he had been by himself, and up till now, she hadn't seen any companions, indicating there was only one reason: Lu Ye's companions were dead!
Just like hers.
"Yes!"
"I see." Song Weiwei understood and then went over to sit quietly, meditating to recover.
What did you understand? Lu Ye frowned.
But seeing Song Weiwei's demeanor, it was evident she was willing to team up with him; otherwise, she would've already left. This was logical; two men and women, companions dead, meeting each other was fate, and both their strengths met each other's needs. In the current environment, it would be hard to find a better companion than each other.
