Chapter 45: Chapter 44: The Medicinal Tea’s Efficacy is Discovered
Xiao Lei and Wang Hao were both from Jiangcheng City. They had met by chance while buying medicine for their chronic bronchitis and had become good friends.
Last night, Xiao Lei happened to see a message in a Jiangcheng WeChat travel group about someone whose cough, caused by a pollen allergy, had been cured.
He didn’t pay it much mind at first, but then five more people in the group claimed their coughs were cured after drinking the Medicinal Tea from Lin Xian Village. One of them even had a mild case of chronic bronchitis.
He immediately contacted that group member, asked for details, and even looked at the purchase record they sent him.
After confirming the person wasn’t joking, he contacted Wang Hao, and the two of them drove to Lin Xian Village first thing in the morning.
"Brother Lei, are you sure we can be cured just by drinking a bowl of Medicinal Tea there? Medically speaking, our condition is incurable."
"Let’s just go and try. Even if it doesn’t cure us, we can treat it as a trip. That place is really popular lately."
To be honest, this kind of chronic illness was just too agonizing. As long as there was even a glimmer of hope for a cure and the price wasn’t steep, Xiao Lei was willing to give it a shot.
"Alright. I just looked it up. The place is definitely popular, but it seems a little unreal, like some kind of fake marketing."
"Haha, the fact that it seems so fake is what makes it feel real. No one would make up something this unbelievable."
The two arrived at Lin Xian Village at 8:30 a.m. and finally understood just how remote it was when people online commented on its out-of-the-way location.
If it weren’t for the traffic police on duty along the way, they felt they would have never found the place.
"This place... if not for all the online hype, I would’ve thought it was a total scam."
"I agree. It looks like an abandoned, remote mountain village. Let’s go. We’ll find the Medicinal Tea first, then go check out that amazing Arrow Tower."
Zhao Shiyun, who had been bored out of her mind, instantly perked up when she saw the two tourists approaching.
"Are you two here to buy Medicinal Tea?"
Seeing a beautiful woman selling the Medicinal Tea, the two were a bit puzzled. ’How has no one posted a picture of this!?’
"Yes, we are. Is this the Medicinal Tea that treats coughs?"
"Yes, yes, it’s very effective for treating coughs."
She wasn’t exaggerating. She’d already had plenty of people test this Medicinal Tea. You could say that for a common cough, one drink was all it took.
For more severe coughs, a few more doses would also cure it. It was truly amazing.
"We’ll take two cups to try, please."
Xiao Lei scanned the code to pay, took the Medicinal Tea, and looked at it. All he could smell was a medicinal scent.
He and Wang Hao downed the tea in one gulp. They soon felt a slight change in their throats.
"Brother Lei, I think it’s actually working!"
Wang Hao was genuinely surprised; he never expected it to take effect so quickly.
Xiao Lei, however, said cautiously, "Let’s go look around first. We’ll see how it is around noon."
The change was so obvious that it made him a little disbelieving. It was just too fast—he felt a reaction right after drinking it. It felt more like it had been spiked with some kind of fast-acting ingredient to clear heat and stop coughs.
"Alright, let’s look around. If it’s working, we’ll come back for another cup at noon."
Zhao Shiyun watched them leave, completely bewildered. ’Those two are a bit strange,’ she thought.
The two wandered around Lin Xian Village for a while and began to understand why so many people online said that while the place was amazing, there were few attractions.
And there really were few—only two open attractions. Plus, the astronomical telescope on the mountain only revealed its true charm at night.
"This owner is basically begging for food with a golden bowl. Why not develop more attractions? It’s not like we don’t have money to spend."
"Stop complaining. The owner is in the middle of construction. Besides, these two attractions became surprise hits. The owner wasn’t ready before the tourists started pouring in."
"Brother Lei, I feel so much better today! Even with all this strenuous activity, I haven’t coughed at all!"
"I think it’s the same for me."
The two looked at each other, their minds turning to the cup of Medicinal Tea they had drunk that morning.
They said in unison, "Let’s go! Time for more Medicinal Tea!"
Zhao Shiyun was just about to get off work and eat when she saw those two strange men from the morning again.
As for why she remembered them, it was because they were the only two who had bought Medicinal Tea all day. The stuff was really hard to sell.
"Miss, two cups of Medicinal Tea!"
They quickly scanned the code to pay. 15 yuan a cup—it felt way too cheap.
After drinking the tea, the sensation in their throats returned. This time, they were certain: the Medicinal Tea really worked.
"Brother Lei, what’s the plan?"
"What else is there to say? Post it in the support groups right now!"
In their search for a cure for their chronic illness, they had joined quite a few of those support groups, looking for folk remedies.
Unfortunately, they eventually discovered that the reason these folk remedies were called "folk remedies" was because they were completely useless.
If there were really a method to completely cure this kind of chronic illness, someone would have patented it, opened a factory, and gotten rich long ago.
It was just like those rumored cancer cures; if someone really had that ability, a Nobel Prize in Medicine would be a shoo-in.
However, to their bewilderment, the messages they posted got them labeled as scammers.
Some groups kicked them out immediately. Others cursed them out, calling them damn scammers who deserved to die a horrible death.
"Brother Lei, what do we do? No one believes us."
Thinking of all the other sufferers tormented by coughing just like him, Xiao Lei decided he had to get the word out about this Medicinal Tea.
He glanced at the beautiful woman selling the tea and had an idea. ’The key to going viral is right here.’
"Miss, would you be willing to film a short video with us? We want to promote this Medicinal Tea."
Hearing his words, Zhao Shiyun looked at him warily. She didn’t even let people take pictures, let alone film a video.
"Miss, I’m not a scammer. I honestly just want to promote this Medicinal Tea. I’m a chronic bronchitis patient, and I’ve discovered that this tea can cure my condition."
"What did you say? The Medicinal Tea can cure chronic bronchitis?!"
With her medical background, Zhao Shiyun was no stranger to the disease. Modern medicine had no cure for it.
"Yeah. Didn’t you know, miss? Aren’t you the one selling this Medicinal Tea?"
Zhao Shiyun only knew the Medicinal Tea could treat coughs; she had no idea it could cure chronic bronchitis. Lin Feng had never told her.
Actually, she was mistaken to blame Lin Feng. The description only said, "Clears fire-toxin, moistens the lungs, and stops coughs." Who knew the cough-stopping effect would be so overpowered?
Lin Feng’s understanding of "stops coughs" was that if you had a cough from a cold, drinking the Medicinal Tea would cure it.
In reality, "stops coughs" meant that as long as there were direct symptoms of coughing, the Medicinal Tea could cure it. Like a special attribute, it was a rule-based effect that completely defied logic.
He hadn’t realized at all that none of the items from his quest rewards were ever simple.
Lin Feng, who had been about to eat, rushed over as soon as he heard the news.
After getting a handle on the situation, he asked the two men, "Are you certain this Medicinal Tea can treat chronic bronchitis?"
"We’re certain. We both have this chronic illness. Look, I even have proof of my treatments and medicine purchases on my phone."
Looking at the photos on his phone, Lin Feng was getting unsettled.
He had thought it was just a simple medicine for clearing heat and stopping coughs, but now he realized this medicine was a bit too overpowered.
He was starting to understand why these reward items were restricted to use only within the village.
"Shiyun, have you ever brewed this Medicinal Tea outside the village?"
"No. I can’t even sell what I brew in the village, so why would I brew it outside?"
He had always wondered why there was no reaction from Zhao Shiyun’s teacher when she showed them the recipe.
The reason was probably that a decoction brewed from this recipe outside the village would have no effect at all.
Moreover, because he didn’t have a Medicinal Herb Garden yet, the tea currently being brewed with herbs purchased from outside was actually quite weak in effect.
Also, the Medicine House hadn’t been built, so the brewed tea was still missing the bonus effect from the Medicine House.
"Gentlemen, we need to discuss this before we decide whether to film a promotional video."
"Ah! Well, will you still be selling the Medicinal Tea?" Xiao Lei asked nervously.
If he was the reason they couldn’t buy the Medicinal Tea anymore, he’d want to slap himself right then and there.
