Rumor Has It I'm Dating the Football Captain
Chapter 165: He Found Us
Chapter 165: Chapter 165: He Found Us
Daisy stared at the name printed on the yellow replacement request.
REQUESTED BY: ADRIAN COLE.
"Adrian Cole," she whispered.
Ben leaned over the metal viewing table and read the signature block again. He compared it against the mental profile they had already built for the man. Former financial controller at Calloway Football Group. Authorized financial representative for Kessler Sports Consulting. He was already present in the older records, sitting right at the intersection of the two companies.
"We have a document proving he requested the original be removed," Ben noted.
Daisy looked at him. "That is enough to make him worth finding."
Ben nodded. "Exactly."
Daisy did not close the folder right away. She examined the replacement request more carefully. A digital reference code was stamped at the very bottom of the page, linking the missing physical document to the scanned version in the database.
She read the fine print beneath the barcode.
REPLACEMENT AUTHORIZED FOR EXTERNAL REVIEW.
Daisy paused. "External review?"
Ben looked over her shoulder. He read the text.
"The document wasn’t just removed for internal filing."
"Someone wanted the original kept out of the company’s normal records while a digital version remained available," Daisy said.
Ben stared at the screen.
"Which means whoever did this controlled which version people saw."
"If an outside auditor came looking, they would only see what they were meant to see."
It made the cover-up far more deliberate. It was not a sloppy mistake. It was a highly organized system of burying the truth.
They packed up their notes and drove back to the newsroom.
Thirty minutes later, they were standing in front of the whiteboard. Ben uncapped a black marker and started building a fresh timeline right in the center of the board.
"Two thousand nineteen," Ben said, writing the year at the top.
He drew a line downward.
"Kessler transactions begin appearing in the main ledger."
He drew another line.
"Adrian Cole is the financial controller at Calloway. During that same period, he becomes the authorized financial representative for Kessler."
Daisy watched the ink dry. "Then Mercer discovers the financial discrepancies."
Ben wrote Mercer’s name. "Mercer raises concerns. Miles becomes involved in the internal response."
"Mason’s name appears in the altered records a few weeks later," Daisy continued. "Then the original authorization disappears into the executive archive."
Daisy stepped back from the board. She crossed her arms and studied the flow of names and dates.
"Adrian had access," Daisy concluded.
Ben put the cap back on his marker. "And Miles had authority."
Daisy looked at him. "So which one was actually running the operation?"
It was the new, defining question. They had two suspects. One had the power to make the investigation go away. The other had the financial expertise to move the money.
Daisy went back to her desk. She began searching Adrian’s professional records. His old Calloway position was long gone, scrubbed from the active corporate directory.
She dug into the state business registry. His corporate history showed he did not simply disappear after leaving the football club.
"He moved into private financial consulting," Daisy reported, scrolling through a list of public filings.
"Any notable clients?" Ben asked.
Daisy filtered the search results. She found a consulting contract registered to his firm. She read the client name and matched it against their notes from the night before.
"One of his former clients was a company connected to the same administrative hub we discovered yesterday," Daisy said.
That put Adrian right back inside the same network. It was not concrete proof of illegal activity, but it was a pattern they could not ignore.
Daisy picked up her phone. "I am going to call his consulting firm."
Ben walked over and placed his hand over her screen. "No."
Daisy frowned. "Why?"
"Because if Adrian knows someone is looking for him, we lose whatever advantage we have left," Ben explained. "He already requested the original document. If we spook him, he goes underground."
Daisy folded her arms. "So what do you suggest?"
Ben looked at the timeline on the board. "We find out where he is first."
Across the city, Mason sat at the head of a polished conference table.
Calloway Football Group was holding a routine executive briefing. Department heads were running through quarterly projections and legal updates. The conversation was incredibly dry.
A senior legal executive flipped to the next page of his report.
"We are still managing the fallout from the external records requests," the executive stated. "The compliance team is flagging a few historical personnel files that were accessed by the press."
Mason flipped his own folder open. "Which files?"
"Mostly lower level administrative staff from 2019," the executive said dismissively. "And one former financial controller. Adrian Cole."
Mason recognized the name instantly. His attention sharpened.
He kept his posture relaxed. He did not mention Audrey’s investigation. He did not tell them that he knew exactly why the press was pulling those records.
"Why are they looking at Adrian Cole?" Mason asked calmly.
The executive shrugged. "Routine fishing expedition. He managed vendor accounts during the stadium expansion. It is nothing to worry about."
"Send me his archived personnel record," Mason instructed.
The executive looked surprised. "I can just have legal summarize it."
"Send me the file," Mason repeated. The tone of his voice left no room for debate.
Ten minutes after the meeting ended, a secure digital file arrived in Mason’s inbox.
He opened it in his office.
Adrian Cole’s employment history was standard. Promotions, performance reviews, salary bumps.
Then Mason clicked on the attached security profile. A photograph of Adrian loaded onto the screen.
Mason stared at the face. He recognized him.
Not personally. They had never worked together. But Mason remembered seeing Adrian during his early years hanging around the corporate offices as a university student.
Adrian had not been sitting in a cubicle crunching numbers. Mason distinctly remembered seeing Adrian walking out of the private executive elevators. He was walking right next to Miles.
Mason realized Adrian wasn’t simply a former financial controller who happened to handle Kessler’s finances. He had direct access to the executive side of the company. He had direct access to Miles.
Mason picked up his phone and dialed.
Audrey answered on the second ring. "Hey."
"Do you know who Adrian Cole is?" Mason asked.
Audrey sat up straighter at her desk. "Why?"
"Because I just found his name in an old Calloway personnel file," Mason said.
Her voice became instantly serious. "What did you find?"
Mason told her about the legal briefing. He told her about the photograph and his memory of Adrian standing with his half-brother.
He gave her the facts, but he did not tell her what to conclude.
"I don’t know what it means yet," Mason admitted.
"Neither do I," Audrey replied.
"Good."
Audrey paused. "Good?"
"Means we are not jumping to conclusions," Mason said.
Audrey smiled slightly. "You sound like Ben."
"Don’t insult me."
Audrey laughed, the sound bright and easy through the speaker. "I have to get back to work. Thank you for telling me."
"I told you I wouldn’t leave you out," Mason promised.
They hung up.
At the newsroom, Daisy was typing furiously.
She ran one more search through the corporate registry. She bypassed the standard tax filings and dug into the active shell companies registered under Adrian’s consulting firm.
She found a current company registration.
But the interesting part was not Adrian’s name. It was the registered contact service attached to the bottom of the page.
It was the exact same registered agent used by Kessler Sports Consulting.
But there was another detail listed right next to it. The name of the legal representative filing the paperwork on behalf of the registered agent.
Daisy slowly looked away from her screen.
"Ben."
He walked over, coffee in hand.
"What?"
She turned the monitor toward him,
"Look at the legal representative."
Ben leaned closer as his eyes moved across the page and then stopped.
"That’s the same firm."
Daisy nodded.
"The ethics complaint against Audrey."
Neither of them spoke.
Ben’s expression hardened.
"We didn’t find him."
Daisy looked at him.
"What?"
He pointed at the screen.
"He found us."
