Chapter 230: The Command Center - I

By the following morning, the five-day timer was gone.

Hans stood near the western side of Main Base with the Construction Yard behind him and several hundred meters of cleared industrial ground ahead.

The Command Center had been waiting for him since sometime during the night.

"What will this thing bring to me?"

Hans brought up the construction map.

Several positions inside Main Base were valid, but most of them were too close to existing production structures or roads already carrying enough traffic. He shifted the placement farther into the secured section near the base’s command and communications infrastructure.

The System checked the location.

Hans confirmed it.

"Deploy."

The ground ahead lit up.

The Command Center’s footprint spread considerably farther sideways than Hans expected. Foundations formed across the cleared industrial ground before thick reinforced walls rose around a broad central structure. Three main stories took shape above them, with recessed entrances protected beneath heavy concrete overhangs and separate vehicle approaches connecting to the surrounding base roads.

Power and data trunks linked into the existing System grid as the outer sections finished forming. Communications masts unfolded across the roof afterward, followed by several smaller antenna assemblies that turned toward the existing base network.

There were no enormous hangars like the Airfield, exposed production halls like the War Factory or cooling structures rising above everything around a Power Plant.

The Command Center simply sat low and wide across the ground, with most of its exterior built around reinforced walls, controlled approaches and considerably fewer ways inside than an ordinary office building.

It did, however, look considerably harder to accidentally walk into.

Hans waited until the last sections finished materializing.

Command Center access is authority-scoped. Physical presence inside the facility does not grant Commander-wide command or information access.

Live Radar information and Tactical Data Mesh functions require connection to an eligible external Radar source.

Hans read through the panel. The expansion radius was useful, but that was hardly what made the building different.

Most of his other structures produced something, repaired something or directly supported combat.

This one took most of the information his troops gathered and gave him a centralized way of managing it.

Then his attention returned to the five new officers.

"Wait, I have sub-commanders now? And five of them?"

He opened the new Command Personnel Registry.

It was not limited to the five new records.

His existing command structure had already begun appearing inside it. Anton and Sabine retained their Company appointments and the command history they had accumulated before the building existed. Felix appeared under Sixth Company farther down the registry, while Matilda’s broader operational authority sat under a different category entirely.

Hans paused on that one.

Apparently, spending months making her coordinate companies, artillery, Engineers, Flight Operations and almost everything else underneath him had not changed what she actually was.

Matilda was still a DASF unit.

Hans had simply given her a much larger job because he needed somebody competent to do it.

The five unfamiliar records appeared separately.

All were Company Command Qualified, divided between Infantry, Armor, Air and Naval specialization, but none had been assigned to a formation yet.

Months ago, Anton and Sabine had grown into larger commands because Hans’s army expanded faster than the organization around them. Matilda had filled an even larger gap on the same principle.

The Command Center was apparently the System’s way of turning that improvisation into something more permanent.

"You know I could’ve made use of this months ago, right?"

The System did not respond. Hans looked at the five new officers again.

"Can’t you just give me more?"

Another panel appeared.

Hans stared at it. Five were free.

"...You could’ve shown me that first."

The panel remained where it was.

He checked the other two additions briefly. Radio Operators gave his formations dedicated communications personnel instead of relying entirely on whatever radios and command vehicles were already available.

The Communications Relay Station handled the fixed side of the same problem, extending secure communications between separated positions without pretending to be another Radar Facility.

Both could wait until he understood what the headquarters itself expected from them.

Hans closed the new menus and approached the main entrance.

The doors did not open immediately.

Several dark lenses were recessed beneath the concrete overhang above him, accompanied by narrow sensor strips built into both sides of the entrance. One of the cameras adjusted toward Hans as he entered the covered approach.

A small panel beside the doors lit up.

"I was beginning to think this place was not secured on its own."

The locks disengaged almost immediately afterward and the reinforced doors separated.

Hans glanced once at the cameras before walking through.

At least anybody trying to enter this place would have to do more than find the front door. And even then, perhaps the cameras would catch them and alert the base.

Inside, he expected another mostly automated System building. Instead, people were already moving around.

Several personnel occupied the workstations beyond the entrance, while others crossed between the communications rooms, logistics sections and deeper command areas carrying tablets or checking the displays built into the walls.

Hans slowed.

None of them matched the five officers the System had just given him.

He opened the nearest information panel.
