Rotting Land: Survive
Chapter 1094 - 1082
Chapter 1094: Chapter 1082
A single stone causes a thousand ripples, and besides worrying about the safety of the team members going out, the survivors at the camp are most concerned about what Duan Chengwu mentioned.
Zhao Yunhai and Lin Junfu were eating when they instinctively exchanged glances after hearing Duan Chengwu’s report, both revealing the worry in their eyes.
Without delay, Lin Junfu grabbed the hand-held radio on the table and immediately inquired: "Xiao Duan, what’s the situation now? Are the approaching figures human or zombies, and how many are there?"
Like a barrage, old Lin launched a series of questions.
After hearing Lin’s questions, Duan Chengwu frowned slightly before responding truthfully: "Right now, I only hear sounds, the specific situation is still uncertain, but I can confirm that there are living beings near the village. Arrange things at the Lin Family; I’ll inform you immediately once we know more. Over."
To avoid making noise that might alert the enemy, Duan Chengwu had to lower his voice while communicating.
Furthermore, snow and wind interference turned the words transmitted to old Lin into stuttering noise mixed with static.
Yet, even so, old Lin managed to roughly decipher Duan Chengwu’s intended message from the few key words transmitted via the hand-held radio.
"Old Zhao!?"
"Uh-huh!" Without much need for words, Zhao Yunhai and Lin, the two old comrades, having experienced similar situations multiple times, could understand each other’s intentions with just a look.
"You stay at home, I’ll go outside to call Wu Chao and Xiao Wen, and then head to the village entrance to support Xiao Duan and old Bi."
"Alright! Be careful!"
"Yeah, don’t worry."
After giving instructions, Lin Junfu grabbed his gear and rushed out of the house.
Meanwhile, old Zhao took hold of the hand-held radio and began arranging details for the camp personnel to ensure everyone was aware of the current sudden situation.
The snow continued mercilessly, and Bi Dahu lying on the ground was shivering, lacking Duan Chengwu’s cold resistance. Not even a minute after lying down, the penetrating cold had become unbearable for him.
"Old Bi, if you can’t take it, you can go back first; I can keep watch alone." Seeing Bi Dahu’s miserable state, Duan Chengwu signaled for him to retreat.
But given the current situation, no matter how tough it was, Bi Dahu couldn’t abandon his post.
"No, no problem, don’t worry about me, continue monitoring!"
Since Bi Dahu insisted on staying, Duan Chengwu did not persuade further.
The two continued to lie in the snow like leopards waiting for their prey.
As time passed, the continuously falling snow gradually covered their ambush location.
Their exposed clothing was now tinted white by snow.
From afar, it was almost impossible to see that two people were hiding underneath.
However, the perfect ambush location cost Bi Dahu and Duan Chengwu a price unimaginable to ordinary people.
Snow seeped into their clothes bit by bit, and Bi Dahu felt as if he was in a freezer, the biting cold truly uncomfortable.
However, hard work pays off, and Bi Dahu’s suffering soon bore fruit.
Approximately 7 to 8 minutes into their ambush, a Black Shadow appeared on their radar.
Due to the heavy snow density, neither Bi Dahu nor Duan Chengwu could clearly identify the approaching figure.
And being unable to determine if they were dealing with humans or zombies, they dared not take the next step rashly.
After all, humans and zombies are still different.
If it’s a zombie, they could go forward and eliminate it.
Conversely, if it’s a human, the matter becomes much more complicated.
"Don’t move!" Duan Chengwu sternly halted Bi Dahu who intended to rise.
The frustration! Originally hoping to resolve the situation quickly and relieve his frozen state, Bi Dahu was forced to remain in close contact with the icy ground by the young man’s stern warning.
Though the identity of the figures remained unclear, the direction of their movement clearly indicated they were heading towards the camp.
This indeed was a troublesome matter, but fortunately, there was only one Black Shadow.
Regrettably, this sense of relief didn’t last for ten seconds before another movement in the snow canopy made Duan and Bi’s hearts sink.
The Black Shadow retreated out of sight, Bi Dahu suggested going forward, but before he could act, the Black Shadow reappeared—this time accompanied by another.
Esteemed readers may have already determined the identities of the two Black Shadows.
Indeed, it was Tang Xiaoquan and Hua Biao returning with supplies.
After three days of arduous travel, they finally reached the vicinity of the camp.
"Hang in there, Xiaotang; just another 500 meters and we’ll be home!" Hua Biao supported Tang Xiaoquan, allowing the young man’s body to rest on his shoulder as he used brute strength to assist him forward.
For this, Tang Xiaoquan was deeply remorseful, knowing that on the third day, Hua Biao had shouldered all the burden to allow him to complete the remaining journey.
Thus, he was too embarrassed to accept Hua’s help and tried to decline while panting heavily: "Hua, Hua Zi! You, you go ahead, anyway, we aren’t far from camp now. I, I can make my way slowly, it, it’s fine."
"Stop talking! Save your energy for walking!" Ignoring Tang Xiaoquan’s refusal, Hua Biao forcibly helped him move forward.
And their joint movement provided Duan Chengwu and Bi Dahu with indisputable evidence.
"Hey! Xiao Duan, they look like people!" Bi Dahu shivered while speaking.
"Yeah." Duan Chengwu responded lightly, his expression unchanged.
Understandably, everyone knows in a post-apocalyptic world, the greatest danger isn’t zombies but human nature.
Now with confirmation that the Black Shadows were humans, their intentions and objectives became crucial.
Moreover, allowing these two to proceed would disclose their camp’s location.
But approaching them rashly could bring further complications.
One, if they request to join them.
Given the current food supply at the survivors’ camp, do they accept or reject them?
Two, if verbal disputes lead to conflict, being unaware of their numbers and equipment could be highly disadvantageous.
Given all these considerations, Duan Chengwu refrained from acting rashly and instead calmly contacted the main camp, then continued to stay hidden to further ascertain their strength.
Time ticked by, and the two Black Shadows moved very slowly.
Yet, as the distance closed, Duan Chengwu and Bi Dahu gained more information.
The two assisted each other forward, carrying large packs, and from their weary appearance, it seemed they had traveled a long way.
This sight somewhat eased Duan Chengwu’s mind.
After all, the opposing side, fatigued from long-distance travel, compared to their own, who were poised and ready, would provide a strategic advantage if a conflict were to arise.
