Rotting Land: Survive

Chapter 1015: Chapter 1001: Mountain Forest Operation (Part 2)
The car was driven by Luo Baochun, while Old Xu sat upright in the front passenger seat. Given their special roles and identities within the team, no one had any suspicions about them.
The isolated space made it convenient for Old Xu and Luo Baochun to converse, avoiding the exposure of Luo Baochun’s past as a former prisoner.
The car steadily moved forward against the bleak north wind, and the occasional appearance of a few zombies on the desolate road brought some semblance of "life" to the survivors on this mission.
The three-hour drive was neither too fast nor too slow, and without any obstacles or dangers, Luo Baochun finally drove the car to the target location based on his memory.
"Screech!" The piercing sound of brakes came from the wheel hub.
Seeing the car stop, Old Xu immediately straightened up and turned his face to ask, "Is it here? Have we arrived?"
Luo Baochun shook his head, "No, their hideout is in the mountain forest, about 500 to 600 meters from here. I’m afraid driving directly there would draw their attention. If needed, I can..."
"No!" Old Xu raised his hand to interrupt Luo Baochun, "You’ve done well, we’ll get off here."
With decisive actions, Old Xu was the first to jump out of the car, then retrieved the hand-held radio, leaning on the door frame, and instructed in a deep voice, "Everyone, get off the car."
Upon hearing this, Hua Biao pushed open the slightly ajar car door, followed closely by Hu Xiaodong and Tang Xiaoquan, who also successively jumped out.
Once everyone gathered, Old Xu further instructed, "The marked rendezvous point I saw at the police station is within that mountain forest. We are approximately 500 to 600 meters from the target. For safety’s sake, we must walk the rest of the way. Here’s the plan... Dazhuang, Hua Biao, you two stay here. The rest follow me into the mountain, any problems?"
"No problems!" They were all old companions who had been together for a long time. The cooperation and trust between the survivors were becoming increasingly solid.
Old Xu raised his eyebrows, glancing at the mountain forest in front of him, then slung the steel Q over his back and stepped inside.
The feeling of returning to the mountain made Old Xu somewhat nostalgic, and Lei Tong shared this sentiment.
Undoubtedly, the mountain forest was their former battlefield, and these two comrades from the Sharp Blade Company found familiarity here.
Since only Luo Baochun knew the exact location of the prisoners’ hideout, and given his special status, Old Xu couldn’t directly communicate with him, only following Luo Baochun from behind to guide the team’s advance.
Luo Baochun was also well aware of this.
Therefore, he walked relatively fast, trying to give Old Xu enough time to respond and arrange.
Thus, the Survivor Squad of six, each carrying their equipment, gradually moved toward the target location.
It must be said that Old Xu and Lei Tong were truly experienced veterans of mountain wilderness terrains.
Compared to others’ discomfort, they navigated the forest as if walking on level ground.
And since this place wasn’t as treacherous as their usual activity spots, therefore...
"Keep an eye on everything, watch your step, spread out the formation, keep your bodies low!" From time to time, reminding Tang Xiaoquan and the others about movement precautions kept Old Xu and Lei Tong somewhat busy.
Luo Baochun walked at the forefront on Old Xu’s "indication."
If you asked him how he felt at the moment, he would definitely tell you two words: Nervous!
Indeed, Luo Baochun was extremely nervous, despite Old Xu’s private promise not to expose his past secrets.
But today’s mission, if he encounters that former jerk, his identity would likely be exposed.
If that happens, explaining further would be futile...
This is why the cost of lying is so high; once you start, trying to stop becomes exceedingly difficult.
As they got closer to the target location, the more anxious Luo Baochun felt.
He even thought of simply confessing to everyone, to avoid being exposed later and put himself in a passive position.
In such a complicated state of anxiety, walking in these mountain woods could only be imagined as very dangerous for Luo Baochun.
As it happened, due to inattention, Luo Baochun stumbled and fell, and before he could react, a pair of withered, decayed hands silently climbed up.
"Roar!" A roar followed closely, and hearing this, Luo Baochun’s heart instantly turned cold.
At the sound, no need to confirm, even a fool, after living in the post-apocalyptic world for a while, could undoubtedly recognize its source.
Zombies! A zombie lurking among the lone leaves and broken limbs!
But if you looked closely, you would find that the zombie wasn’t lying in wait on the ground, but rather its lower body had long since vanished, with its remaining spine being split open, most of the internal organs gnawed clean, leaving only a few residual intestines trailing on the ground, spending the entire summer and autumn with its owner.
Yet even so, even when ravaged to such a withered state, the zombie still wasn’t dead.
Not only was it not dead, but it also held a stronger will to fight than when it was alive.
That’s right! The zombie was excited, extremely excited, having not seen a living being for so long, just like a celibate for many years, suddenly seeing a beautiful naked body lying before it.
It virtually leapt onto Luo Baochun’s body; it’s hard to imagine how such a decrepit zombie could make such an agile move. This illustrates just how immense the allure of fresh meat was to it.
After a brief stunned moment, realizing the danger, Luo Baochun instinctively felt fear, wanting to struggle, but the pain in his spine and the pressure on his body left him no time for the necessary reaction.
However, just as the creature was about to succeed, teetering on the edge of death’s abyss, Old Xu rushed forward wielding a knife.
Reaching out to pull "Tiger’s Fang" from his waist, Old Xu’s hand became a claw, akin to grabbing a monkey, lifting the decrepit zombie lurking on Luo Baochun, ready to bite.
Then, in the split second the creature glanced back, he accurately plunged the knife into its head.
All of this happened in an instant, and by the time everyone reacted, Old Xu had already dealt the fatal blow to the creature.
"Are you alright?" Squatting down, Old Xu gazed at Luo Baochun with serious concern.
At this moment, Luo Baochun had been scared half to death by the sudden life-and-death crisis.
It wouldn’t be fair to call Luo Baochun cowardly, after all, even the strongest have fears of the undead.
Moreover, to be torn to death by zombies, just this method of dying is enough to make anyone shudder.
Even if Luo Baochun had lived as a survivor for a long time in the post-apocalypse, facing a zombie’s attack, that innate fear was unavoidable at any time.
However, after the brief shock and terror, as Luo Baochun gradually regained his composure, he also felt a bit of shame.
As the team’s guide, Old Xu undoubtedly placed a significant level of trust in Luo Baochun, which only deepened his sense of regret and guilt for his recent carelessness. (To be continued.
