Role Stealer: The Script Executioner
Chapter 104: The Passage Beneath the Lake
Vaelora turned toward the crack in the floor.
"Come with me, Elias."
Her expression was neither kind nor cruel.
It was certain.
"Or watch another world disappear."
The red light rose higher.
It spread across the hall in thin lines, moving beneath the black stone like veins beneath skin. The tables shook. Glasses fell and shattered. The food Jax had been reaching for slid across the surface and disappeared through the widening crack.
Jax stared after it.
"That was the only thing here I trusted."
Sarah grabbed the back of his coat.
"Move."
"I am moving emotionally."
"You are standing still."
"I am processing the loss."
Another tremor struck the tower.
The walls bent inward.
Vaelora did not move.
She stood at the edge of the crack while the red light wrapped around her boots. Her crown brightened, and the fire trapped inside it began turning slowly.
Mira raised her blade.
"You expect us to follow you into that?"
"I expect you to choose before the passage chooses for you."
Aster stepped toward the crack.
"Where does it lead?"
"The third world."
"You have never crossed it."
"I have seen it."
"That is not the same."
"No," Vaelora said. "It is worse."
Kai stayed beside me.
His hand remained against mine, but his fingers were tense.
"What is the third world?" he asked.
Vaelora looked at him.
"A world that was never meant to exist."
"Then why does it?"
"Because someone built it from everything the other worlds rejected."
The crack widened.
For an instant, something appeared below us.
A forest beneath a violet sky.
A road made of white stone.
A city hanging upside down in the clouds.
Then the image vanished.
The heartbeat beneath the lake grew louder.
Mira looked at Serin.
"You knew this was happening."
Serin stood near the closed doors, her face pale.
"I knew the passage would open."
"You did not say it would destroy the city."
"Vaelora did not know either."
Vaelora’s visible eye moved toward her.
"Do not speak for me."
"I am speaking because you will not."
The red light flashed.
A shockwave crossed the hall.
Serin fell against the wall. Dorian caught her before she hit the floor.
Vaelora looked at him.
"You should not have come."
Dorian steadied Serin.
"Neither should you."
"I belong here."
"No one belongs beneath a lake."
Jax raised one finger.
"I have been saying that since we entered."
No one answered him.
The crack opened enough for a staircase to become visible below.
The steps descended into red darkness.
Each one was made of a different material.
Glass.
Wood.
Bone-white stone.
Black metal.
The final step could not be seen.
Aster crouched near the edge.
"Those are not stairs."
"What are they?" I asked.
"Decisions."
"How do you know?"
"Because I have seen them before."
"In the first world?"
"In the place between worlds."
He looked toward Vaelora.
"She built the passage from choices people refused to make."
Mira lowered her blade slightly.
"That is impossible."
"Everything beneath this lake is impossible."
Vaelora walked onto the first step.
The glass beneath her foot filled with a memory.
A young Vaelora standing in a ruined street.
The buildings around her were burning. People were running between the flames, carrying children and broken machines.
A younger Serin stood beside her.
"I cannot find my brother," Serin said.
Vaelora turned toward the smoke.
"You cannot go back."
"I have to."
"If you go, you will die."
"He is still there."
Vaelora took her hand.
"Then I will go with you."
The memory faded.
Vaelora stepped onto the wooden stair.
This time, the step showed a different moment.
Vaelora sitting beside a hospital bed.
A boy slept beneath a white sheet. His face was pale, and thin red lines moved beneath his skin.
Serin stood beside the bed, older now.
"You promised you could save him."
"I promised I would try."
"You used his memories to build the first bridge."
"I needed a mind strong enough to hold the passage."
"You used my brother."
"I gave him a way to survive."
"He does not even know his own name."
Vaelora looked toward the sleeping boy.
"He will know when the world is ready."
The image disappeared.
Serin closed her eyes.
"You kept that memory."
Vaelora did not turn around.
"I keep everything."
The next step was black metal.
It showed Vaelora standing beneath a lake that did not yet exist.
Around her, a circle of people knelt in silence. Each person held a glass vessel containing a glowing memory.
A man in a gray robe spoke.
"You cannot bind an entire city to one desire."
Vaelora answered.
"I am not binding them."
"You are asking them to remain."
"They are afraid to leave."
"Because you have shown them what lies outside."
"I showed them the truth."
"You showed them the worst possible future."
Vaelora raised her crown.
The lake formed around the city.
The black tower rose.
The people became connected by red lines.
Not chains.
Threads.
But every thread led back to Vaelora.
The memory ended.
Aster stared at the stair.
"You did not build Lyradis to protect people from loneliness."
Vaelora looked at him.
"You were there."
"I watched you make their loneliness useful."
Her eye hardened.
"And I watched you abandon everyone who could not cross with you."
The accusation struck him harder than the darkness ever had.
Mira stepped between them.
"Enough."
Vaelora looked at her.
"You defend him because he reminds you of the person you failed to save."
Mira’s face became cold.
"Do not enter my memories."
"I do not need to enter them. You carry them openly."
Kai tightened his hand around mine.
The red light beneath us pulsed.
The stairs shifted.
The glass step behind Vaelora cracked.
Serin spoke from the hall.
"If the passage collapses, everyone in Lyradis will be pulled into it."
??Everyone?" Sarah asked.
"Every body. Every memory. Every promise."
"And where will they go?"
Serin looked at the darkness below.
"Wherever the passage decides."
Dorian studied the stairs.
"Then we should stabilize the route."
Vaelora turned toward him.
"With what?"
"Authority."
She looked at me.
"No."
The word came from Kai.
Vaelora turned toward him.
"No?"
"You want Arthur to build the road."
"Elias."
"You called him Elias."
"That is what he is."
"He is both."
Vaelora studied him for a moment.
"You remember more than you admit."
Kai’s expression hardened.
"I remember enough to know what happens when people ask him to build something they intend to control."
The red light moved up the walls.
The tower groaned.
Vaelora took another step down.
The white stone beneath her showed a city unlike Lyradis.
The sky was dark blue, filled with enormous silver moons. Tall grass moved across endless fields. In the distance, a group of people stood around a fire, singing.
No towers.
No walls.
No doors.
The image felt peaceful.
Too peaceful.
"What is that?" Mira asked.
"The third world," Vaelora answered.
"It already exists?"
"Partially."
"What does that mean?"
"It exists wherever someone dreams of leaving without knowing where they will go."
Aster looked into the image.
"I have been there."
Vaelora’s eye narrowed.
"When?"
"Before Lyradis."
"You entered the unfinished world."
"I entered the place before it had a name."
"Then you know what waits there."
"I know what waits for people who arrive carrying unfinished memories."
"What?"
"The world gives them shapes."
Aster turned to us.
"It does not ask who you are. It asks what you want to become."
Jax frowned.
"That sounds suspiciously like a place that judges people."
"No," Dorian said. "It sounds like a place that amplifies them."
"That is worse."
Vaelora descended another step.
The image beneath her foot changed.
This time, it showed me.
Not as Elias.
Not as Arthur.
As a young man standing in a field beneath a violet sky.
Vaelora stood beside me.
Her hair was loose. Her crown was absent. She was smiling.
I was holding a wooden door in my hands.
Behind us, a small house was being built from white stone.
"You cannot keep rebuilding the same door," she said.
"I am not rebuilding it."
"You are."
"I am making it larger."
"So more people can pass through?"
"So no one has to remain outside."
Vaelora looked toward the horizon.
"What happens when everyone enters?"
"They can choose whether to stay."
"And if they choose to leave?"
"Then we let them."
She looked at me.
"Even if you love them?"
I remembered my answer.
"Especially then."
The memory broke.
Vaelora continued down the stairs.
I could not move.
Kai was watching me.
"What did you see?"
"Us."
"Before?"
"Before the Tower."
"What was she to you?"
I looked at Vaelora’s back.
"I do not know."
"You loved her."
The words did not sound like an accusation.
That made them worse.
"I think I did."
Vaelora stopped on the stair below us.
Her shoulders tightened.
Mira looked between us.
"Vaelora?"
The woman beneath the lake did not turn.
"Love is a dangerous word in Lyradis."
"Why?" Kai asked.
"Because here, love is not only a feeling."
She looked over her shoulder.
"It is a bond the city can use."
The stair beneath her foot filled with red light.
A second memory appeared.
Vaelora and I standing beside the first door.
The same door Kai had opened.
The city was collapsing around us.
I was holding the Authority.
Vaelora was holding the crown.
"Someone must remain," she said.
"No."
"If everyone crosses, the world outside will collapse."
"Then we divide the passage."
"We tried."
"We failed."
"You failed."
I looked at her.
"Do not make this about blame."
"It has always been about blame."
She raised the crown.
"If you cross with them, you will lose the memory of me."
"I will remember."
"You will not."
"I promise."
"You always promise."
The first door began closing.
Vaelora reached for me.
I grabbed her hand.
For a second, we stood together between the worlds.
Then she released me.
I fell through the door.
She stayed behind.
The memory vanished.
No one spoke.
I looked at Vaelora.
"You stayed."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because you asked me to."
"I did?"
"You said someone had to hold the passage open."
"I thought I was asking you to cross later."
"You were asking me to remain."
"I would not have done that."
"You did."
Her voice did not contain anger.
That was worse than anger.
The red light beneath the stairs began spreading across the hall.
Vaelora turned away.
"That was the first time you promised to return."
"And I did."
"No."
"You are here."
"You returned as Arthur."
The word moved through the tower.
Kai’s hand slipped from mine.
Vaelora looked at him.
"He returned without remembering me."
Kai’s expression was guarded.
"Maybe he returned because he had to."
"Maybe."
"And now?"
"Now he must decide whether he is still the person who made the promise."
Mira stepped down onto the first stair.
The glass beneath her foot showed a memory.
Kai, as a child, standing outside the door.
Mira holding his hand.
Arthur and Vaelora arguing behind them.
Mira heard Vaelora say, "If you take him through, he may never return."
Arthur answered, "If I leave him here, he will become the passage."
Mira looked at Kai.
"Do you want to go?"
The child nodded.
"Do you want me to come?"
He nodded again.
Mira looked toward the adults.
"Then I will not let either of you decide without him."
The memory ended.
Mira took another step.
"I remember that."
Vaelora’s eye moved to her.
"You were the only one who asked him."
"And you still took the choice away."
"I was trying to save him."
"You were trying to save the promise."
Vaelora did not respond.
The passage beneath the lake opened wider.
A wind rose from below.
It carried voices from the third world.
Some were calling.
Some were singing.
One voice spoke my forgotten name.
"Elias."
Another voice answered.
"Vaelora."
The two names moved through the darkness together.
The fifth bell rang above the city.
The sound entered the red light and turned it white.
The walls of the tower began to dissolve.
Serin shouted from above.
"The city is losing its shape!"
Marcus reached for her.
"Then we go down."
"Into the passage?"
"Unless you want to be buried beneath Lyradis."
Serin looked toward Vaelora.
"She will not let us leave."
Vaelora looked at her.
"I am not keeping anyone here."
"You have been saying that for years."
"I am opening the road."
"For whom?"
Vaelora’s gaze moved across the group.
"For anyone willing to cross."
The stairs began descending faster.
The hall stretched around them, becoming a vertical tunnel of red and white light.
Buildings appeared beneath us.
Bridges.
Fields.
A city with no walls.
The third world was no longer far away.
It was beneath our feet.
Vaelora extended her hand toward me.
Not commanding.
Not begging.
Waiting.
"Come with me."
Kai looked at me.
He did not tell me what to do.
Mira did not either.
Aster turned toward the dark passage.
Jax whispered, "This is the part where someone makes a terrible romantic decision, isn’t it?"
Sarah elbowed him.
"I am only identifying the pattern."
I looked at Vaelora’s hand.
I remembered the promise.
I remembered the door closing between us.
I remembered returning as Arthur.
And I remembered Kai carrying a name that was never his to protect.
I took Vaelora’s hand.
Her fingers were cold.
The moment we touched, the tower screamed.
The passage opened completely.
The lake rose into the air.
Lyradis began to fall upward.
People across the city were pulled from the streets, but they did not disappear. Red threads connected them to the bridges, the houses, and one another.
Serin shouted orders.
Dorian and Neri began directing people toward the open roads.
Sarah and Kael held a collapsing bridge in place.
Jax carried three glass memory vessels beneath one arm and complained the entire time.
Marcus stood beside the central tower, using the remaining system fragments to slow the collapse.
Mira took Kai’s other hand.
Aster placed his palm against the red light.
The four positions connected.
Body.
Authority.
Witness.
Remainder.
Vaelora stood opposite me.
The fifth position appeared between us.
**DESIRE.**
Vaelora looked at the word.
"No."
The system tightened around our hands.
The passage demanded a choice.
Not whether we would cross.
Why.
I felt Vaelora’s desire enter the connection.
She wanted to bring Lyradis into the third world.
She wanted to save everyone.
She wanted to make sure no one could abandon her again.
Kai’s desire followed.
He wanted his own body.
His own memories.
A life that was not a correction.
Mira wanted a world where Kai could choose without being sacrificed.
Aster wanted a place where the past could not name him.
I wanted to return to the promise before the Tower changed it.
The passage waited for one desire to become dominant.
Vaelora looked at me.
"If you choose yours, Lyradis may not survive."
"If I choose yours, no one will be free."
"You think I do not know that?"
"I think you are afraid of what happens if you stop holding them."
Her hand tightened around mine.
"And I think you are afraid that if I let go, you will remember why you loved me."
The words struck through the connection.
The third world opened beneath us.
For one moment, I saw Vaelora without the crown.
A girl standing beside a burning city.
A woman holding a dying boy.
A ruler beneath the lake.
And the person who had once held my hand as the first door closed.
I felt the love she had carried.
Not a command.
Not a bond.
A wound that had learned how to rule.
I looked at her.
"I remember."
Her face changed.
"What?"
"Why I loved you."
The passage went silent.
Kai looked at me.
Vaelora’s hand began to shake.
"Why?"
"Because you wanted to save people even when saving them meant they would leave you."
Her eyes filled with something the red crown could not contain.
"And now?"
"Now I love you enough not to let you imprison them."
The fifth position broke.
**DESIRE: UNRESOLVED.**
The passage rejected the command.
The white light exploded.
Vaelora released my hand.
The world beneath us opened.
Everyone fell.
I reached for Kai.
Mira reached for Aster.
Serin reached for Marcus.
Vaelora disappeared into the light below.
The last thing I saw before the third world swallowed us was her red crown breaking apart.
Then a voice rose from beneath the falling city.
Not Vaelora.
Not Elian.
Not the Tower.
A voice that sounded like the world itself.
"Welcome to Lyradis Below."
And we crossed.
