Book 4, Chapter 183: Something Is Suspiciously Missing In My Inherited Memories

Chen Chuan sat still as the memories appeared in his mind. All of them came from the memory medicine.

Usually, the medicine kicked into effect when he was deep in sleep or in a rather relaxed state.

Before this, he had been busy reaching the Fourth Limit and entirely focused on mental training, so he replaced sleep with meditation. He had also been swarmed by problems, so he didn’t have time to relax. That was why the memories didn’t show up. After all, they could become distractions.

Now that he reached the Fourth Limit and became a martial arts master, only a handful of people could threaten his life in Jibei Road’s Central City. He wasn’t in such a hurry to train anymore, so his mind and body relaxed completely, and the memories his mother left behind finally showed up.

In the past, the memories were erratic and disconnected. Sometimes, they connected to certain thoughts, experiences, or sights. He couldn’t control it.

But with his current strength, he was no longer restricted by whatever conditions were set in the memory medicine. As his body transformed, his mental energy grew, and his knowledge and mastery of his body improved.

With a single thought, all the memories that had and hadn’t shown up rose in a clutter in his mind. It took a bit of time to organize them, and they started playing one by one in probably the right sequence.

After looking through all the memories, Chen Chuan had more or less a general outline of the events.

Most of them were his mother’s experiences and adventures from when she was younger, along with certain things that happened before and after the old Chen Chuan was born. The second largest group of memories were training methods and techniques for martial arts. To him, that portion was the most precious.

The remaining part was her encounters later on, as well as how she got her hands on the medicine. But there weren’t a lot of memories about this, and Chen Chuan saw nothing, only heard words.

In all, most of the memories were good, just like the stories parents would tell their children of their adventures from when they were younger. She also taught him some martial arts knowledge. As for the bad memories that might make him feel down, his mother seemed to not want to show them directly and downplayed them.

Because of it, he did not learn everything. It wasn’t because his mother was trying to hide it, but from what he could tell, it was because his parents didn’t want him to be involved in them, just know about certain dangers and enemies. That was why they did this.

Chen Chuan noticed that whenever something important happened, the brunette always showed up. It could be said that the source of everything that happened to his parents was related to her.

She came from a rather unique background, and his mother was her bodyguard. While his mother never directly spoke about it, based on clues here and there, Chen Chuan managed to figure out her identity.

He opened his eyes. “Safe Shield, help me find all executives of Proto-Being, past and present, along with their relatives and families. I need details about those from twenty to thirty years ago.”

“Understood. You have sufficient authority to review the information. Retrieving it from the database.”

Once Safe Shield gave him the information, Chen Chuan saw a string of words on his Realm Pass. Most of them were a simple introduction to Proto-Being.

The creator, Gao Weishen, built the company in Welbur, a country in the Western Continent. By now, the company was 190 years old.

Gao Weishen came from a branch whose ancestors were from the Eastern Continent, and they had familial ties with the former royal family.

Two hundred years ago, due to them losing a political fight, this branch was exiled to the Western Continent. Le’garde III, the emperor of the Western Continent back then, named the head of the family Marquis Etwar, and they settled in Welbur. Then, they used their vast connections in the Eastern Continent to perform international trade, a lot of which was the slave trade, and make a massive profit.

Despite being in a foreign country, the Etwar family paid great attention to their bloodline. The main family never married anyone who wasn’t a noble from the Eastern Continent, so they retained their eastern features and had no children of mixed blood.

150 years ago, due to the discovery of high energy algae and the advancement of technology, all the empires descended into turmoil. The main family then migrated to Oceanland. Since they provided financial support to the Linacrox Union when it was just established and actively fought for them, they got a pretty important position.

The Linacrox Union now had eighty-two states, and Trent Haimo was one of the five largest states. The sacred land of the natives was once there, but now, it was completely occupied by the Gao family, and Proto-Being’s headquarters was located there.

During the age of the mega alliance, the world was busy building Central Cities and the World Ring. Proto-Being was a major player by then and joined the efforts. So, they got a lot of technology and research results. After the mega alliance collapsed, it became an international corporation.

This was all public information, though the Resolution Department had more details. Even so, there was still no confidential information.

“Lead Investigator Chen, I’ve sent you the information you requested,” Safe Shield said.

Chen Chuan read the information presented on the screen. Around thirty years ago, Gao Lun, the sixth descendant of Marquis Etwar, was the president of Proto-Being. He had two sons and a daughter. The eldest son was Gao Xinjian, the second son was Gao Xinwen, and the youngest daughter was Gao Yuling.

Due to his old age, Gao Lun later retired behind-the-scenes. Now, Gao Xinjian was the one running the company and managing the businesses in the region. As for Gao Xinwen, he was in charge of expanding the business abroad.

Meanwhile, Gao Yuling had gone missing more than ten years ago, when she was on a holiday abroad. Her bodyguard disappeared with her, so she was suspected to be dead.

This didn’t cause too much of a stir, because Proto-Being used the ancient inheritance traditions of the Eastern Continent. Only boys had succession rights, so Gao Yuling’s disappearance didn’t change the power structure of Proto-Being.

Ten years ago?

Even though he didn’t have an exact timeframe, that was shockingly close to the time his parents disappeared.

“Do you have Gao Yuling’s picture and details, Safe Shield?” Chen Chuan asked.

“Since the main family practically never show their faces in public and keep a tight control over their information, I don’t have any details about them. I only have an unverified photo of Gao Yuling from when I believe she was twelve,” Safe Shield answered.

“Let me see,” Chen Chuan requested.

A picture immediately showed up on his Realm Pass. The background showed that it was taken on a ship. It was a selfie taken when some rich tycoon took a cruise ship out on a holiday. Two girls were waving at seagulls flying in the distance.

One of them was clearly the rich tycoon’s daughter, because her figure and face were almost identical to the man’s. The side profile of the other girl made it hard to identify her, but she had light brown hair.

Chen Chuan stared at her. The woman in the memories did have light brown hair. Since he couldn’t verify whether it was her from her side profile and hair color, he took a look at her raised arm and fingers.

There were certain physiological traits that couldn’t be changed unless someone got implants. As he made comparisons between the woman in the memories with the girl in the photo, then linked them together with the information he had, he became certain that they were the same person.

If Safe Shield was right that the girl in the photo was the youngest daughter, then the woman in his memories was Gao Yuling.

He started thinking. Gao Yuling’s disappearance was highly suspicious. He couldn’t imagine how a member from the Gao main family could just vanish. If thinking in the most basic manner, then her disappearance should be tied to some business or family conflict.

If that were the case, were his parents dragged into the mess?

It was clear that this happened while Yu Zhen, his mother, was in charge of Gao Yuling’s safety while she was traveling in the Great Shun Republic. Both of them also seemed close to each other. Some hints in his memories also pointed to Proto-Being.

Could the old Chen Chuan’s death be related to them as well? The old Chen Chuan had been dead for around six years at this point, but there was still a long period of time between his death and his parents’ disappearance. Was there really a connection between them?

Right now, there were too few clues. Chen Chuan lacked crucial information, such as what the red vial was. He didn’t find any clues in the memories.

That might be because someone was missing from this puzzle.

Based on the clues left behind, his parents had gotten him a martial arts teacher.

This person should have taken him to Central City after his parents left, and he should have discovered the memory medicine in Grand Prosperity Finance based on the clues in the apartment, then uncovered all the martial arts techniques and training methods inside. From there, he could become a martial artist.

But the teacher never showed up, and the old Chen Chuan stayed in Yangzhi City while walking down another path until his untimely death.

Chen Chuan was pretty sure that the martial arts teacher had sole knowledge of many things.

Even though he didn’t know who the person was, he was sure that his parents trusted them very much. They might be Yu Zhen’s peer or senior.

He then remembered that his mother’s mentor was Madam Ni’s junior. She had also shown up in the memory medicine before. She should be a Third Limit martial artist, so he might be able to learn something from her.

With a wave of his hand, everything on his screen vanished.

He went to the sofa and stared at the sky outside.

Before, he was weak and could only set these things aside. Now, though, he was a martial arts master and could protect himself. He should find time to figure out this mystery.
