(Akane's PoV)
The walk toward my apartment complex was a calculated exercise in maintaining my internal equilibrium.
My boots hit the cold asphalt with a rhythmic, sharp strike, a familiar physical friction that usually helped reset my processing grid whenever the environment became too cluttered, while my right hand was locked through Shin's fingers with a firm, almost defensive grip.
I didn't turn my head to verify his presence; the solid, radiating heat of his bicep pressing against my shoulder was enough.
I kept the violet Lilibat plush crushed firmly against my ribs with my free arm.
I didn't even realize how hard my fingers were digging into the stitched fabric until the seams groaned under the pressure. The lingering echo of that speakerphone call was still bouncing around my temples.
Daiki Sakurai's voice—loud, chaotic, and entirely undisciplined—had managed to inject the name Sora Fujimoto straight back into my mind.
My jaw remained clamped shut, the muscles along my jawline completely rigid.
I wasn't jealous. I was simply evaluating the environmental hazards.
The school festival representative logistics were turning into a structural minefield, and the fact that the flawless, universally adored student council president had volunteered to cover my boyfriend's unauthorized attendance required an immediate tactical assessment.
'How kind of her...' I thought, recalling old memories, 'She had never done something like that for someone. She was always so strict despite her kindness and angel aura.'
Yeah. I remember that last year she snitched on me about smoking on the rooftop, not knowing that teachers wouldn't have done anything.
That was the first time we interacted. Not a good encounter, of course, but we started talking more often after that event since she apologized for not knowing about my 'privilege', which is why I knew so much about her.
A perfect student, both inside and outside school. The light coming from her aura was so bright that nobody dared to speak with her. Everyone kept admiring her from a safe distance.
'Tch—'
After quite some time walking, we finally turned the corner toward the residential area where my apartment was.
And then, the street line was completely cleared of ordinary pedestrians, leaving only two matching anomalies advancing directly toward our coordinates.
Kurone and Kenji.
The moment we saw them, I squeezed Shin's hand and gently dragged it, silently signaling for us not to stop or slow our pace.
He had received the message, luckily.
My gaze then scanned the two subjects in front of us.
I recognized the line of Kenji's shoulders first.
Even stripped of his embroidered varsity jacket, my half-brother possessed that specific, arrogant posture that always made my blood turn to liquid nitrogen.
But as the distance between us closed, the structural defects in their dynamic became more visible.
Their footsteps were entirely scorching, uneven, and broken, as if their systems had barely survived a catastrophic mechanical failure.
Kurone looked completely hollowed out. The pristine, glossy porcelain mask she spent every single morning perfecting was entirely ruined, thick black tracks of mascara cutting burning lines down her pale cheeks from hours of heavy, uninterrupted crying.
Her strawberry-blonde curls were a chaotic, tangled web around her face.
But one of the 'strangest' details was the right shoulder strap of her casual dress—it was noticeably stretched, loose, and askew, a clear physical indicator that someone had roughly jerked her frame during an argument. Moreover, her large eyes were fixed entirely on the cold asphalt beneath her soles, her chest heaving with shallow, jagged breaths.
Kenji walked right beside her, but his posture radiated an absolute, calculated disinterest. I could tell that.
He was dressed in high-end, elegant clothes, looking like a man who had just exited a high-status establishment, but his handsome face was a cold, empty vacuum.
His eyes stared straight ahead into the gray light, completely ignoring the weeping girl at his arm.
The superficial thrill of his conquest had completely run out of traction, leaving nothing but an empty, expensive shell.
In that moment, my eyes narrowed into tiny, razor-sharp slits the exact microsecond our shoulders passed.
A low, defensive growl nearly escaped my throat, my fingers locking around Shin's hand again with such sudden, white-knuckled force that his knuckles clicked under the pressure.
This time, I didn't even realize I was doing it. I didn't realize the sheer, territorial venom flashing through my golden irises as I stared dead at the side of Kenji's face, my body ready to pivot if he even dared to lift his eyes.
But... they didn't see us.
They were entirely consumed by their own mutual misery to notice the two figures moving past them in the dim twilight. They drifted past like phantoms, their footsteps fading away into the silence of the lower street.
'I wonder what they were doing here...' I asked myself, not stopping our walking.
I could tell that Shin was surprised too, but he didn't say anything. He just kept walking with me, his hand still in mine.
After that little event, we walked in that heavy silence for another full block before the freezing realization of what I had just witnessed completely bypassed my intellectual armor, hitting my core with a terrifying speed.
"I hope with everything I possess that you'll never turn into that, Shin," I said. My voice came out incredibly low, a rough, gravelly rasp that barely carried through the winter air.
Shin stopped his boots instantly against the pavement, his torso spinning around to face me entirely. "What do you mean, Akane?"
"Indifferent," I whispered, the word tasting like ash in my mouth as I finally forced my golden eyes to lift from the plush mascot, locking them straight onto his.
The memory of Kenji's cold, unblinking vacuum face was burning behind my eyelids. That was the same look he had on his face whenever he saw me crying because of my parents. "I hope you never look at my face and become entirely indifferent to my existence, Shin. I don't think my system could survive it if you stopped looking back. Indifference is the worst thing possible, even worse than hate. Simply because hate requires feeling something."
After my words, Shin didn't offer a scripted answer. He just stepped forward, invading my personal space, and reached out both of his long hands to firmly grab my shaking fingers, pulling them away from the crushed plush and locking them within his own warm palms. He squeezed with an absolute, unyielding strength that physically anchored my frame to the concrete.
"That is an absolute psychological impossibility, Akane," he swore fiercely, his eyes burning into mine with an uncompromising finality that left zero room for doubt. "That will never, ever happen to us. I will never look away from you. Never."
I didn't give him a verbal reply. My throat was too tight, the old, suffocating weight of my childhood isolation threatening to collapse my composure.
But my fingers slowly, beautifully wove themselves back through his, my grip turning desperate as we resumed our hurried march toward the complex.
Then, we kept walking until we reached the concrete entrance of the apartment building, bypassing the lobby without a word, and rode the elevator up to the fourth floor in a tense, breathless silence. I led the way down the sterile corridor until we reached the door marked 402, then slid the key into the lock, twisted it with a sharp, rapid movement, and pushed the door open, pulling Shin inside before slamming the heavy wood shut and throwing the bolt into place.
The moment the lock clicked, sealing the rest of the world away behind the barrier, the final piece of my unapproachable lone wolf armor completely disintegrated.
I dropped my bag to the floorboards with a loud, metallic clatter, and without a single second of hesitation, my hands flew to the zipper of my old black hoodie—the one I had stolen from his closet—and pulled it down, tearing the thick cotton fabric from my shoulders and throwing it onto the floor.
I reached behind my back, unbuttoning the pleated black skirt and letting it drop to my boots, followed immediately by my tights, until I was standing in the center of the dim entryway clad in nothing but my black lace underwear.
Then, I looked back at my beloved and adorable boyfriend and noticed his flustered expression.
So... hot, in some ways.
"Get out of your clothes, Shin," I commanded, my voice dropping into a flat, raspy monotone that vibrated with a tightly coiled, frantic energy. "Do it right now."
He blinked, his eyes widening in genuine, sudden surprise as he stood in the hallway, his hands hovering over the hem of his gray sweater. "Akane...?"
"Do it," I repeated, not giving him a single millimeter of margin to argue. "Please..."
And then, Shin followed my orders without asking for further explanations.
I wasn't surprised, for some reason.
But this time, I didn't wait for him to complete the action.
I grabbed the front of his sweater, the exact microsecond he pulled his arms through the sleeves, my fingers locking into the fabric, and violently hauled him down the short corridor straight into my dark, minimalist bedroom.
Then, I pushed his chest hard, using the momentum of my entire body weight to force him back onto the mattress.
Before he could even draw a breath to ask what was happening, I crawled over his thighs, straddling his waist, and pinned his shoulders flat against the sheets.
Then, I leaned down, my hair falling forward like a dense curtain, completely isolating our faces from the rest of the room.
"Now we are completely, structurally secure," I whispered against his lips, my breathing shallow, ragged, and hot. "Now we are absolutely certain that nobody from that building can see your face. Nobody can look at you here. So... I guess that nobody could snitch on you skipping school."
I paused, my golden eyes flashing with a sudden, malicious spark as the image of Sakurai's smirk flashed through my brain.
"Just remind me to gather the kitchen knives before we leave for school tomorrow morning," I murmured, a dangerous curve touching my lips. "I am entirely certain one of those steel blades has Sakurai's name explicitly carved into the handle. I need to eliminate him for existing."
Shin let out a low, soft chuckle beneath me, his hands automatically rising to wrap securely around my narrow waist. "I'll help you pack them, boss. But right now, you need to tell me what's actually running through your head." He said, before caressing my cheek.
His touch was enough to turn me on to maximum levels... I can't properly explain why...
That question stripped away the last of my aggressive facade, and the frantic energy was completely drained from my muscles, leaving me entirely exposed under his gaze.
I let out a long, shuddering sigh, my arms completely giving out, and I collapsed forward, burying my face deep into the warm hollow of his bare neck.
"Ah... damn it," I whispered, my voice breaking into a rough, fragile thread as I snuggled my weight completely into his chest, my limbs going slack against his frame. "I couldn't physically handle the distance anymore, Shin. I couldn't handle being out there in the outside world where other people have the right to look at you. I'm sorry... I just needed to touch you. And also... I wanted you to be safe from any kind of problem regarding school."
Shin didn't offer a single word of judgment. His long arms wrapped fiercely around my back, his palms flattening against my skin, pulling my torso down until our heartbeats were perfectly aligned, vibrating through our ribs like a single, unified circuit. I could even feel his arousal.
Then, we lay there in the quiet darkness of my bedroom for what felt like an absolute eternity.
The frantic, territorial panic that had been static-charging my nervous system since the bakery counter slowly began to quiet down, neutralized entirely by the steady, deep rhythm of his breathing beneath my cheek.
My right hand was resting flat against his sternum, my fingers lightly, unconsciously tracing small, repetitive circles over his skin.
I didn't even realize I was executing the motion. It was an involuntary, physical habit my system had developed—a mechanical re-verification that the boy beneath me hadn't evaporated into a phantom.
Every time my mind replayed the image of Sora Fujimoto's clear, beautiful eyes fixing on his jawline, my fingers would tighten their grip against his skin, my nails digging slightly into his flesh before I could catch myself. For some reason, that was even worse than the feeling of seeing Kurone again.
"You're squeezing me remarkably tight, Akane," Shin murmured into the dark, his hand moving automatically through my tangled black hair, his fingers offering those slow, soothing scratches at the base of my skull. "Not that I dislike it, of course."
"I am merely maintaining the baseline security of my territory, Ishikawa," I mumbled into his shoulder, refusing to lift my head to let him see the pink flush staining my cheeks. "The contract parameters require continuous monitoring," I added, unconsciously moving my hips against him.
"You don't have to monitor me in the dark," he replied softly, his voice a gentle, comforting rumble under my ear. "I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere."
I remained silent, my eyes staring widely into the shadows of the bedroom.
The analytical, cold part of my brain—the side that had spent years evaluating human behavior from the benches of the park—was trying to dissect my own internal failure.
I was Akane Takanashi. I was the girl who had survived an absolute war zone of an abusive household by turning myself into an unapproachable, menacing machine.
I had learned how to nurse my own wounds and protect my own boundaries before I even entered middle school.
I had spent years passing myself off as a quiet, stoic boy named Ren, completely controlling my expressions, my voice, and my posture so nobody would ever dare to see a target.
So why was the machine completely falling apart now?
The realization hit my chest with a cold, heavy weight.
I had spent seven years watching him from the shadows, fully convinced that if I ever managed to claim a space beside him, I would be his absolute, flawless protector.
I thought I was the strong one. I thought I was the one pulling him back from the edge of the roof.
But the absolute truth was that the moment he placed that brass house key into my palm—the moment he looked into my eyes and declared that he trusted me more than anything else in the world—he had completely dismantled my armor.
He had made me soft, exposing the raw, bleeding child hiding beneath the leather boots and the silver industrial piercings.
And now that the child was out in the light, she was absolutely, thoroughly terrified of losing the only sanctuary she had ever possessed.
Nobody had trusted me enough to give me the keys to their house, like it was the most normal thing in the world.
I shifted my weight slightly, my bare leg hooking over his thighs to anchor myself further, my chin resting on his chest as I finally forced myself to look up into his dark eyes.
"Shin," I whispered, my voice sounding incredibly small, the raspy edge completely stripped of its usual venom.
"Mh? What is it, Akane?" He said, smiling softly at me and caressing my head.
"Do you honestly think... do you think I'm completely insane?" I asked, the question escaping my lips before my intellect could rationalize a script to hide it.
My fingers played nervously with the edge of his gray sweater on the mattress. "I mean... the way I handled that girl at the register... the way I looked at Kenji in the street... I didn't even realize my face was doing those things until you called me out on it. I spent half a decade mastering absolute control over my micro-expressions, Shin. But the exact microsecond that angel looked at your face, my system completely overrode my logic. I turned into a violent, territorial freak."
I had already told him about my insecurities... but at the same time, I now felt like I needed to hear more of his words.
As soon as I spoke, Shin stopped moving his fingers through my hair. He stared down at me through the silver moonlight filtering through the blinds, his dark eyes wide, calm, and infinitely gentle.
There wasn't a single grain of fear or judgment in his expression; there was only that deep, unyielding clarity that had made me fall in love with him seven years ago.
"You're not insane, Akane," he said softly, his hand moving down to tenderly, reverently cup the side of my jawbone, his thumb erasing a stray lock of hair from my forehead. "You're just finally allowing yourself to be a human being. Inside this room... inside my arms... the armor you've built through all these years is completely useless. You don't have to be the invincible lone wolf here. You're allowed to be jealous. You're allowed to be insecure. You're allowed to just be my girl."
The words hit my chest like a sudden, massive tide of pure warmth, completely crushing the last of my defensive walls.
A sharp gasp of pure emotion caught in my throat, my golden eyes widening as a thick, crystalline layer of tears finally broke over my lower lashes without even realizing. I didn't even try to hide them.
I was crazy. He was capable of making someone like me feel like a total crybaby. I love him.
At least, he made me feel like a real human after all this time. My entire soul was just a dam or a sponge that absorbed everything for years before exploding because of him.
"F-Fool," I stammered, my voice cracking completely as a single tear cut a hot track down my cheek. "You are completely, structurally unfair, Ishikawa."
"I know," he smiled, a genuine, beautiful grin splitting his face in the moonlight. "But I care about you. A lot."
My heart jumped. I'd be lying if I said that my heart didn't want to say an 'I love you'.
Then, Shin leaned his head up from the pillow, closing the short distance between our faces, and pressed his lips against mine in a slow, deep, and incredibly deliberate kiss.
That clearly wasn't a clash of frantic desire; it was a silent, physical translation of the promise he had made in the graveyard.
'I am here. You are safe. I belong to you.'
I opened my mouth beneath his, tasting the absolute honesty of his devotion, my arms tightening around his neck with a fierce strength.
When he pulled back, my breathing was ragged, my chest heaving with a profound, peaceful gratitude.
I dropped my head heavily back onto his chest, my nose nuzzling flat into the skin of his neck as my fingers interlocked tightly with his on the sheets.
The heavy quiet returned to wrap my bedroom, but the cold friction was completely gone, replaced by a deep, familiar heat that anchored both of our souls to the mattress.
In that moment, I didn't feel the need to monitor the perimeter, verify the locks, or check for school spies.
I was just a girl resting in the arms of her boyfriend, completely secure in the dark, and as my eyes were half open, savoring every single moment, I knew with absolute certainty that the lone wolf had finally discovered her home.
And in that moment, during our intimacy, I felt Shin's hand reaching the curves of my butt.
His touch was soft and gentle, but enough to drive me insane.
"S-Shin...?" I mumbled, my hips unconsciously leaning into his touch.
'Ah... Fuck... I want him so much...' I thought.
In the exact moment I spoke his name, Shin whispered something to my ear.
"I want you right now, Akane,"
And in that moment, I knew what was about to happen.
