The silence that followed after my single shisper was so absolute, so heavy and vast, that it felt suffocating.

The television screen continued to flicker in the dark, casting long, distorted waves of cool blue light across the ceiling panels and washing over the tangled mess of our limbs on the couch, while the lingering warmth of the kitchen seemed to grow stagnant and cold in the air between us.

Everything had stopped.

The playful urgency of a few seconds ago, the breathless hunger of our mouths meeting in the dark, the weight of his bare chest pressing me into the cushions... all of it had vanished, frozen instantly by the exposure of my left arm.

I stood there, frozen beneath him, my breath trapped like a jagged stone in my throat.

I couldn't move, and I couldn't even force my eyelids to blink.

My left arm lay exposed in the pale neon glow of the screen, the heavy gray sleeve of my sweatshirt bunched up carelessly at my elbow, revealing every single secret I had desperately tried to bury.

During those moments, Shin didn't speak or pull his body away from mine in disgust.

He just hovered over me, his upper torso suspended in the dim light, his eyes wide and completely unblinking as they bored straight down into the raw, devastating damage marked upon my skin.

The waiting was a slow, agonizing torture, and every single tick of the wall clock in the kitchen sounded like a hammer striking an anvil, echoing through the hollow chambers of my chest.

Moreover, my heart was a frantic, terrified animal, slamming itself mercilessly against my ribs with a deafening, irregular thudding that I was entirely certain he could feel against his own skin.

'Say something', my mind begged into the emptiness, the thought screaming behind my teeth while my lips remained locked tight. 'Please, Shin, just say something. Shout at me. Demand an answer. Just don't look at me like that.'

But he remained entirely motionless, a quiet statue carved out of shadow and moonlight.

His gaze seemed to slowly trace the lines that ran from the soft turn of my wrist all the way up to the crook of my elbow.

In the blue light of the television, the scratches looked dark, almost purple.

Then, a heavy, suffocating wave of pure terror began to wrap its fingers around my throat.

I watched the tight, unreadable line of his jaw, and for the first time since we had locked the door of the apartment, I felt a deep, piercing dread settle into my marrow.

I didn't know what was turning over behind those bottomless eyes of his, and I certainly didn't know if his mind was currently filling with a soft, patronizing pity, or if he was looking down at me and realizing, with absolute certainty, that the girl in his arms was completely, thoroughly insane.

'He thinks I'm a monster,' the dark voice whispered from the corners of my mind, the sound echoing with the exact pitch of my father's cruel laughter. 'He's realizing what you are. He's going to stand up, gather his clothes from the floorboards, and walk out of this sanctuary forever before he will go insane trying to figure out who you really are.'

The mere thought of the iron door clicking shut behind his back made my vision go blurry, and without realizing it, a sudden, violent tremor started deep within my chest, rippling outward until my shoulders began to shake uncontrollably against the fabric of the sofa.

I wasn't even aware that my body was breaking down.

I was just a trembling, ruined thing pinned beneath the only anchor I had left in the world.

The silence stretched for another ten seconds, heavy enough to crush the air from my lungs, before Shin finally broke it.

He didn't shift his weight, but his voice cleared the quiet like a low, gravelly vibration, sending a soft ripple through the room.

"You're shaking, Akane..."

The words were incredibly soft, whispered with a quiet, raw observation that held zero judgment; just a gentle acknowledgment of the storm currently tearing through my nervous system.

But before I could force a single word to come out from my mouth to defend myself, Shin moved.

He reached down with his right hand, his fingers moving through the dim light with a slow, deliberate grace, and gently, reverently took hold of my left hand, and slid his palm beneath mine, his fingers wrapping around my knuckles with a steady, warm pressure that immediately tried to anchor my trembling frame to the cushions.

He lifted my damaged arm slowly, lifting it through the cool air of the living room as if he were handling a piece of fragile, ancient glass that was on the verge of shattering into a thousand pieces if he applied even a fraction of unearned pressure.

Then, he lowered his head, and I watched, with my eyes wide and swimming with a sudden, hot blur of salt, as Shin leaned down over my forearm.

He closed his eyes, his dark lashes casting soft shadows against his cheekbones, and pressed his warm lips directly against the raw, swollen tracks near my wrist.

A sharp, breathless gasp caught in the back of my throat.

He didn't speak a word. He just kept his mouth pressed against the inflamed skin for a long, quiet second, the intense heat of his breath washing over the wound like a soothing balm.

Then, he moved his lips a fraction of an inch upward, pressing another soft, lingering kiss against the next angry red line. And then the next. One by one, with a meticulous, silent devotion, he kissed every single scratch that lined the pale length of my arm.

I didn't feel pain, not at all.

His lips were soft, unhurried, and entirely gentle. There was no hesitation in his movements, no hint of disgust or revulsion as his mouth touched the ruined skin.

He was treating my wound with a deep, reverent quiet, and it made me... feel different emotions.

The utter, beautiful delicacy of the gesture completely broke something fundamental inside my chest.

In my father's house, blood and marks were always followed by shouting, by heavy hands and slamming doors, by an absolute demand for submission.

Violence was met with more violence, and weakness was an invitation for destruction.

But Shin... Shin was looking at the ugliest, most broken piece of my soul and meeting it with an absolute, silent tenderness that made my heart ache with a fierce, stabbing pain.

It broke me. It shattered the final remnants of my pride into dust.

Then, a low, choked sob tore through my throat, and before I could even process the movement, I forced my upper body upward.

I ripped my chin from the palm of my hand and threw my torso forward, burying my face deep into the smooth, bare skin of his shoulder.

Shin's arms opened instantly, closing around my back with a sudden, crushing tightness that pulled me completely off the cushions and into his lap.

He then wrapped his fingers around the back of my head, threading them through the jagged, messy strands of my black hair, and pressed my face firmly into the hollow of his neck, right against the steady, heavy pulse point at his collarbone.

Inside his arms, I let the tears fall. Every single one.

They broke over my lashes in hot, heavy streams, soaking through the wool of my sweatshirt and tracking down the bare skin of his shoulder in wet, salty paths.

I clutched at the muscles of his back, my fingers digging hard into his skin as I sobbed without restraint, my entire body shaking against his chest like a leaf in a gale.

But even as the relief of his arms wrapped around my frame, a dark, heavy knot of pure terror remained tightly coiled beneath my ribs.

The sheer, terrifying perfection of his comfort was driving me mad.

'Don't do this, Shin...' the thought wept silently behind my forehead, each sob a ragged tear in my lungs. 'Please, don't be this good to me. Don't heal me this easily. If you hold me like this, if you make me feel this safe within your shadow... it's only going to make me ten times more terrified of the day you finally realize I'm too strange to be with you. I will have only more fear of losing you.'

But even if I thought these things, I couldn't leave his side. My fingers just clung to him even tighter.

We stayed locked in that tight, unyielding embrace for several long minutes while the television continued to cast its useless blue light across the room.

I kept my hands moving across the expanse of his back, tracing the hard, solid lines of his shoulder blades, feeling the rise and fall of his deep, even breathing against my cheek.

That was a rhythmic, grounding anchor that slowly, carefully began to draw the frantic panic out of my chest, reducing my heavy sobs into a series of quiet, ragged hiccups against his neck.

Then, Shin leaned his head down, pressing a soft, lingering kiss directly onto my forehead, his fingers gently smoothing the messy black hair away from my wet temples.

After that, I slowly pulled my face back from the warm skin of his neck, though I refused to let my hands release their grip on his shoulders, and I took one long, shaky breath, feeling the cool air of the living room stinging the back of my throat as I forced my eyes to look straight into his gaze.

In that moment, I had finally realized that the only choice I had was to speak.

So, I just laid the raw, unvarnished truth out between us, letting him see the rot exactly as it was.

"Every single time my mind starts to picture you standing within the space of another girl..." I whispered, my voice dropping into its lowest, most gravelly rasp, a sudden tremble catching the edge of my words. "I feel his dirty blood violently boiling through my veins, Shin. I feel my father's shadow rising up behind my eyes."

I tightened my fingers into the cotton of his shorts, my knuckles turning white as the admission tore through my chest.

"The disgusting urge to control your every movement... the suffocating mania to claim your presence as mine and only mine in front of the entire building... it takes complete command of my thoughts. And I am terrified, Shin. I am absolutely, thoroughly terrified of becoming the exact same monster that destroyed my mother's life behind locked doors."

During my confession, Shin remained perfectly still, his hands resting quietly against the bare skin of my thighs beneath the hem of the sweatshirt, his eyes fixed entirely on my face as he listened to me.

"Ever since we officially became a couple, no... even before..." I continued, a wet sob catching in my throat as I forced the words out, "and every time I witness you interacting with other girls in those corridors... the fire under my skin starts to burn. I feel this extreme, frantic madness to pull you deep into my territory, to lock you away from the rest of the world where nobody else can ever look at your face. And... and the worst part is that I perfectly know that it is a horrible, toxic thing to desire. You spent seven miserable years of your life trapped in a cold, silent cage as Kurone's shadow. Denying you the freedom to live, to speak, and to move through the world just to feed my own paranoid whims... it would be the absolute worst, most disgusting thing I could ever do against your heart, especially after the immense pain you've already survived."

I looked down at the dark lines on my left arm, the blue light making the swelling look even more pronounced.

"And today... during the afternoon block... I completely lost it. I sat at my desk for an entire hour, entirely unable to hear the teacher's voice, because my mind was trapped in a frantic loop, picturing you standing close to Sora. I saw her smiling at your face, saw her reaching for your sleeve... and before my common sense could even catch up to the panic, my hand just started moving on its own under the wood of the desk. I began compulsively clawing at the skin, digging my nails deeper and deeper into the muscle just to use the physical pain to stop the shouting in my head... until my arm looked like the wreckage you see now."

A fresh tear broke over my nose, splashing onto his bare chest. I then looked up at him, my eyes wide and filled with a raw, agonizing vulnerability that I had never exposed to another human soul.

"I'm... I'm incredibly strange and broken, aren't I, Shin? I didn't even know this part of me existed," I choked out, my voice cracking entirely. "I am just so desperately, fiercely terrified of losing you. What exactly is going to happen to my universe if one day your eyes open, and you finally realize that you deserve someone significantly better than a problematic girl like me? Someone perfect, like the president? Someone who isn't twisted by a monster's legacy? The mere thought of you leaving me for someone else is painful. I spent years standing in the dark, watching your silhouette from a distance, hoping against hope that one day I could build a future beside your arm... and now that you're here... I can't lose it. You are literally the only one I have in this world, Shin. The only one I can call 'Family'. I want you, and only you. For now, and for the rest of our days."

The admission hung in the quiet room like a heavy shroud; the raw truth of my insecurity lay completely bare under his analytical gaze.

Shin didn't look away.

Throughout the monologue, his hands had remained firmly and steadily anchored against my legs, his touch a constant, unyielding weight that kept me from floating away into the dark.

He stared into my wet, trembling face for several quiet seconds, his expression completely undisturbed by the madness I had just detailed.

Then... he spoke.

His voice was a low, smooth, and thoroughly sincere rumble that carried the solid weight of a mountain.

"You are never going to become like him, Akane," he said simply.

I blinked, his words catching inside my ears as I searched his face for any hint of a lie.

"Because... after everything you told me about him," Shin continued, his dark eyes locking onto mine with an absolute, uncompromising finality, "a monster like your father would never shed a single tear out of fear of hurting the person he claimed to love. He enforced his desire through violence because he believed his dominance was a justified right. But you... you are sitting here weeping in the dark, mutilating your own skin, entirely because you are terrified that your love might accidentally cause a single scratch on my freedom."

He reached up with his right hand, his long fingers gently, tenderly cupping the side of my wet face.

"That distinction is the only thing that matters, Akane," he whispered, his thumb softly erasing a fresh tear from my cheekbone. "Monsters don't possess a conscience. You do. And I am genuinely, deeply grateful that you found the capacity to speak these words to me. It makes me incredibly happy to know the depth of what you're carrying for me. Truly." He added, smiling.

Then, a small, breathless shudder escaped my lips.

I closed my eyes, my entire frame leaning into the warm palm of his hand like a drowning sailor catching a floating lifeline.

Then, I reached up with both hands, locking my fingers securely around his wrist, gripping his arm with a desperate, white-knuckled tightness, as if I were terrified that if I let go for even a microsecond, his presence would dissolve into the blue light of the television.

Shin tilted his chin down, his breath warm against my forehead as his voice dropped into an even softer, more resolute frequency.

"Every single time that dark voice starts shouting behind your eyes, every time this fear tells you that I'm going to walk away... I want you to clear your throat and tell me directly. Always," he murmured against my hair. "Don't hide these thoughts under your sleeves anymore. Just tell me you're afraid, and I will always be right here to hold you, to reassure your mind, and to remind your heart that I am exclusively, entirely yours. No one else is ever getting between us, Akane. And I've never been more sure of that."

After his words, a massive, overwhelming wave of pure, painful happiness completely flooded my chest, the sheer intensity of his words sending a sharp ache straight through my ribs.

That was a beautiful, stinging relief that washed away the remaining frost from my soul.

"Thank you, Shin..." I whispered into the quiet, my voice breaking as my fingers tightened around his wrist. "I love you so incredibly much."

The moment the explicit words cleared my throat, Shin's dark eyes suddenly widened for a fraction of a second.

He froze against my shoulder, his pupils dilating slightly.

I have already told him that I love him, but... this time was... different. And I'm sure that Shin felt it too.

Before he could form a response, he reacted with his body.

Shin pulled his arms around my waist and back with a sudden, near-crushing tightness that completely flattened my chest against his bare torso.

He squeezed my frame against his body with an intense, desperate strength, as if he were trying to physically fuse our two souls together to protect us from the outside corridors.

"Stupid girl..." he muttered into my neck, his voice a rough, gravelly rasp that vibrated with a deep, hidden emotion. "Don't you dare make me worried like this next time. Speak to me, just like you did. I'll always be there."

I didn't answer him with words. I just buried my face back into the warm, familiar curve of his neck, my hands moving rhythmically across the hard muscles of his back as another wave of soft, quiet tears slipped from my eyes.

But this time, those were the clean, weightless tears of a broken girl who had finally located her permanent safe harbor.

We stayed locked in that tight embrace for a long, unhurried time, the loud blare of the television fading into complete irrelevance while the steady, unified beat of our two hearts filled the empty room.

The silence between us was warm, comfortable, and entirely clean.

There was no need for further explanations, no need for dramatic performance; the simple reality of his arms holding my frame was more than enough.

After a few more quiet minutes, the cool evening air of the living room began to settle against the bare skin of my legs, making me shift slightly within his lap.

I slowly pulled my face back from his shoulder, looking down at his handsome, unblinking features with a soft, content sigh.

"Let's move into your bedroom layout now, Shin..." I whispered, my voice a low, raspy purr that carried a deep, foundational intimacy. "I have an intense, immediate need to feel the continuous weight of your presence beside me tonight."

There wasn't a single drop of lust or physical heat. That was just a simple, honest desire to stay close to the person I loved, to sleep within his shadow where the ghosts of my family couldn't reach my head.

I looked at his serious face for a second, then a small, mischievous smirk slowly reclaimed the edges of my lips, my classic lone-wolf arrogance making a deliberate return to clear the heavy atmosphere from the room.

"And while we're going," I added dryly, tilting my chin up with an air of cold superiority, "you are explicitly required to pick me up and carry me to your room like a flawless princess. My legs are currently operating under a severe emotional deficit, and I believe that I still need some reassurance."

Shin looked at me for a wide, unblinking second, completely stunned by the rapid shift in my attitude, before a loud, clear, and thoroughly beautiful laugh erupted from his chest.

The sound was so adorable that he somehow illuminated the entire apartment. For me, at least.

"Alright, princess," he chuckled, his eyes crinkling at the corners with a deep affection. "Guess I have no other choice, right?"

"Exactly, Ishikawa. No other choice." I replied, holding out my arms.

Then, Shin shifted his weight on the couch, sliding his arms beneath the hem of my oversized sweatshirt.

One hand was backing my shoulders and the other locked securely behind the curve of my bare thighs.

With a single, effortless upward surge of his leg muscles, he lifted my entire frame completely off the cushions, cradling my body against his chest as if I weighed absolutely nothing to his system.

I instinctively threw my arms around his neck, my fingers locking into the dark strands of his hair as he turned his torso and began to walk slowly, toward the isolation of his bedroom.

'I love you so fuckin' much, Shin... I'm happy.'

The wool of my sweatshirt shifted against his skin as he moved, with the cool air of the apartment filtering through the corridor.

Down on my left forearm, the red tracks and swollen scratches were still throbbing with a dull, physical sting under the dark fabric.

The wounds hadn't vanished into thin air, and the sickness inside my family bloodline hadn't been miraculously cured in the span of a single evening.

But as I looked up at the sharp, calm line of Shin's jawline in the dark, feeling the steady, rhythmic beat of his heart moving against my palm, a deep, unyielding peace settled permanently behind my ribs.

My arm still burned, but for the first time in my entire miserable life... I wasn't afraid of the dark anymore.

I just wanted to be with him.
