The front door of my house clicked shut behind us, but this time, it wasn't the heavy, final, prison-like sound it had made before Valentine's Day.

It was a familiar, solid, and strangely reassuring sound.

I stood in the entryway, taking a slow breath, and the air inside wasn't freezing, stale, or heavy with dust anymore, since the rich, bitter scent of the coffee Akane had brewed that morning still lingered pleasantly in the air, mixing with the sharp, clean smell of lemon polish on the hardwood.

I also noticed that the small bouquet of fake flowers that usually sat forgotten on top of the living room cabinet had been moved to the center of the entryway console, offering a small, welcoming burst of color right at the door.

I leaned down to unlace my school shoes. Right beside me, Akane did the same, toeing off her heavy leather combat boots. They hit the welcome mat with two dull, heavy thuds.

"The house is still clean," I observed, looking down the polished hallway, genuinely impressed. "It doesn't even look like the same place."

"It took a lot of work, because you're a dumbhead," she admitted, straightening up and casually tucking a stray lock of black hair behind her silver-pierced ear. "But it was worth it. We can call this a 'home' now." She said, gently punching my arm. "I'll ask for a paycheck from you next time, so you better not mess this house up again." She added.

"Okay, boss," I replied. "You're amazing."

Her cheeks were slightly flushed, a delicate, dusty pink against her pale skin.

I couldn't tell if it was from the brisk evening air outside or if she was actually a little embarrassed by my praise.

"Ahh! Stop it! Flatteries won't get you anywhere!" She said, scratching the back of her head.

"Thank you," I said softly, stepping closer to her in the narrow entryway. "You really didn't have to do all of that."

"I know," she replied, tilting her head back to meet my gaze. Her golden eyes caught the dim, warm light of the hallway lamp, shining with a quiet intensity. "But I wanted to."

Then, without making a sarcastic joke to ruin the sweet moment, she simply turned on her heel and marched toward the kitchen, her silhouette standing out sharply against the warm orange glow of the sunset filtering through the window.

"Right then," she announced, vigorously rubbing her hands together like a boxer preparing to step into the ring. "It is time for me to take command of the stove. Prepare yourself to be homeless, ghost boy. We might not have a kitchen in twenty minutes."

"No paycheck then," I joked.

Ten minutes later, the situation was rapidly deteriorating.

Akane was wearing the only apron I owned. It was a joke gift from Daiki two years ago—a bright red apron with "Kiss the Cook" written in massive, bold white letters across the chest.

Since she was smaller than me, the fabric swallowed her, the hem hanging comically low, almost brushing her knees.

"Are we absolutely sure we want to do this?" I asked, leaning my shoulder against the kitchen doorframe, my arms crossed over my chest, watching her warily, while letting out occasional chuckles.

"Absolutely," she replied, her voice radiating an alarming amount of overconfidence. She was holding a spatula like it was a broadsword. "How many eggs do you want? And stop laughing at me, it's not my fault here—"

"Two, J-Just two, please," I replied, chuckling again.

"Good. Two eggs. That sounds incredibly easy." Akane replied with a clearly annoyed expression

Then she turned the knob on the stove, and as the blue flame flared to life, she grabbed a bottle of cooking oil and poured it over the pan.

She poured. And kept pouring.

"Akane..." I warned gently, my eyebrows rising.

"Shut up. I know exactly what I'm doing." She replied, not accepting any other word from me.

She set the bottle down, grabbed an egg from the carton, and cracked it aggressively against the rim of the hot frying pan.

The shell shattered, and the yolk, the egg white, and roughly half of the crushed, jagged shell plummeted into the sizzling pool of oil.

"Shit," she whispered, her confident facade instantly crumbling.

Without thinking, she reached her bare fingers directly into the hot oil, trying to pinch out the largest fragment of shell.

"Ouch! Ah, fuck!" she yelped, immediately jerking her hand back and violently shaking her fingers in the air.

I couldn't help it. A loud, genuine laugh escaped my chest.

"Don't just stand there laughing at me, help me, dumbhead!" she shrieked, her golden eyes wide with panic and indignation as she continued to flap her burned hand around.

I immediately pushed off the doorframe and quickly closed the distance between us, grabbed her wrist, pulled her toward the sink, and turned on the cold water tap, thrusting her hand under the freezing stream.

Her palm was hot, the tips of her index and middle fingers flushed a bright, angry red.

"I've got it. Just leave the cooking to me," I said, a smile still playing on my lips.

Then, I reached around her, grabbing the spatula and deftly lifting the ruined, shell-filled egg out of the pan and tossing it into the trash.

Akane didn't protest; she just stood by the sink, holding her hand under the water, watching me work.

Her cheeks were burning bright red—not from the heat of the stove, but from absolute, mortified embarrassment. The terrifying lone wolf of the junior year had been utterly defeated by a single egg.

I was actually surprised, because Akane had already cooked for me, and I couldn't understand why she was having problems.

In ten minutes, I had salvaged the disaster. I plated two perfectly fried eggs, sunny-side up with crispy edges, alongside two golden-brown slices of toast, and sliced a fresh apple for the side.

I set the plates on the small dining table while Akane was standing by the counter, her arms crossed over the ridiculous "Kiss the Cook" apron, her eyes narrowed in a suspicious glare.

"You're a cheat," she muttered darkly.

"I am not a cheat. I just actually know how to cook. I had to learn for my own survival since my parents are never here," I replied.

"Same thing," she grumbled, untying the apron and tossing it onto the counter. "Guess we match the missing parents, too."

"I guess so, living alone at our age surely is a pain in the ass," I sighed.

Then, Akane and I sat down at the table.

She sat directly opposite me, immediately pulling her bare legs up and sitting cross-legged on the chair.

She was wearing my black t-shirt again, the wide neckline slipping carelessly off one shoulder to reveal her pale skin and the dark ink of her collarbone tattoo.

"It's not a Michelin-star meal," I admitted, gesturing to the plates. "But it's definitely edible."

Akane picked up her fork, pierced a piece of the fried egg, and brought it to her mouth. She chewed slowly.

"Mmmh," she hummed, fluttering her eyes closed in exaggerated bliss. "Not bad, Ishikawa. Not bad at all."

"You literally burned yourself for this. I had to make the best meal possible," I replied, clearly satisfied by her praise.

"It was a noble sacrifice. Totally worth it." She said, with a 'happy' expression on her face.

I smiled, picking up my own fork, and then we ate in silence for a few minutes.

It was that same, rich, comfortable silence we had shared on the roof, a silence that felt like home.

"So, I've heard the news about the next school event," Akane said, using her knife to cut a precise square of toast. "This Spring Festival thing... what exactly is it? I always skip school events."

"It's just a massive school event," I replied, shrugging my shoulders. "Food stalls, carnival games, a giant bonfire, a couples' dance at the end... stuff like that. The whole neighborhood usually comes."

"And, you're involved in it, right?" Akane asked, pausing to eat for a moment.

"Unfortunately, yes. Takaneda-sensei drafted me this morning and made me one of the class representatives with Daiki."

Akane raised a dark eyebrow, a spark of amusement in her eyes. "Daiki? You mean... Sakurai? That nerd?"

"Yeah. Exactly him. But he's a good guy, at least. He's one of the few people I could talk with," I replied.

"I'm so sorry for you," she said, though her voice was entirely devoid of sympathy and thick with suppressed laughter.

"It's not that bad," I admitted, taking a bite of my apple. "Actually... maybe it will even be fun this year."

She paused, her fork hovering in the air, before looking at me with genuine surprise flashing across her features.

"You're incredibly optimistic today," she noted.

"Strange, isn't it?" I replied.

"Very," Akane said, as if she were mocking me, but I saw her hand tightening the grip on the knife, for an instant.

We looked at each other across the small table for a long, suspended moment, with the dim light of the kitchen casting a warm glow over her face.

Then, she smiled, and I smiled back. And the rest of the dinner passed in a blur of light conversation, easy laughter, and the comforting clatter of silverware against ceramic plates.

After dinner, Akane insisted on washing the dishes, claiming she needed to redeem herself for the egg disaster. I tried to say "no" to her, but she didn't accept that answer.

I leaned against the counter, watching her work, and admired the straight, confident line of her back, the way her jagged hair fell around her face, and her small hands submerged in the soapy water.

"Hey, Shin," she called out, not turning around from the sink.

"Yes? What is it?"

"About that piano in your bedroom... do you actually play it?" She asked while washing the dishes.

The question caught me completely off guard. My posture stiffened slightly.

"Uh... yeah. A little bit," I stammered, rubbing the back of my neck. "I'm not a professional or anything. Let's say that my father bought it for me when I was little because I always admired piano players, and he even said that 'Music is the only thing that will never leave you alone'." I added, recalling my father's words with a bittersweet nostalgia.

In that moment, Akane stopped her dishwashing for a second and moved her gaze to me. Her eyes were soft.

"Can you play something for me?" She then asked, before going back to work.

My stomach did a nervous flip since I never expected such a request.

"I don't... I don't really play in front of anyone," I admitted, my voice dropping. "It's just a private thing. I just mess around."

Akane turned off the faucet. She grabbed a towel, dried her hands meticulously, and then turned around to face me, leaning her hips against the counter.

"You don't have to play for me if you don't want to, Shin," she said, her voice incredibly calm and reassuring. "I'm not forcing you. But... I would really love to hear you."

Her golden eyes were entirely serious. There was absolutely no pressure in her request, no heavy expectation, no demand to be entertained. It was just pure, genuine curiosity, like she just wanted to know another piece of me.

I looked at her, and the lingering anxiety simply evaporated.

"O-Okay," I whispered.

Then, we walked upstairs together.

My bedroom was completely dark, except for the pale, silvery glow of the streetlamps filtering through the open blinds, casting long rectangular shadows across the carpet.

The upright Yamaha piano sat in the corner of the room, draped in a heavy white protective sheet.

I hadn't opened the lid in months. Maybe even a year. I used to play random melodies for Kurone, but she never truly cared.

Moreover, whenever I had tried to play recently, the music just sounded hollow and depressing.

Akane walked over to the bed and sat down on the edge of the mattress. She crossed her ankles, folded her hands neatly in her lap, and kept her golden eyes fixed on me.

"I won't judge," she said softly, perfectly reading the residual hesitation in my posture. "Just play."

I walked over to the corner, grabbed the edge of the white sheet, pulled it off, folded it, and tossed it onto the desk chair. A few motes of dust danced in the moonlight.

I sat down on the leather bench and opened the wooden lid, revealing the black-and-white keys.

My fingers were actually trembling slightly as I raised my hands. I hadn't played a song for another human who wasn't Kurone since I was in elementary school.

I took a deep breath, closed my eyes, placed my hands on the keys, and then began to play.

The melody was slow, sweet, and profoundly melancholic.

I had composed the progression a couple of years ago, during a particularly terrible, lonely night when I couldn't sleep because Kurone had canceled our plans at the last minute to hang out with her friends.

I had never played it for anyone, and to be honest, I had never even fully finished writing it.

But tonight, sitting in the dark, knowing she was watching me... the music felt different.

My fingers moved across the keys effortlessly, automatically. The notes seemed to take on a life of their own, pouring from the piano and filling the purged, empty spaces of my bedroom with a rich, haunting resonance.

Behind me, Akane didn't say a single word. She didn't move. She barely even seemed to breathe.

When my fingers pressed the final chord, letting the sound slowly decay into the air, the silence that followed was so absolute, so heavy, that it almost scared me.

Then, I heard her voice.

"Encore."

I opened my eyes and turned around on the bench.

She had moved. She was sitting on the very edge of the bed now, leaning forward. In the pale moonlight, I could see that her golden eyes were shining, glassy with unshed emotion.

"Encore?" I repeated, blinking in surprise.

"Another one," she demanded softly. "Please."

"I don't have another one," I said, scratching the back of my head.

"Then invent one, right now," Akane demanded.

I looked at her, who wore the smile of a girl utterly captivated.

Then, I turned back to the piano. My heart was soaring. I placed my hands on the keys and began to play again.

This time, the melody wasn't melancholic. I played something lighter, faster. Something that sounded like the wind rushing across the school rooftop, something that sounded like freedom.

When I struck the final, bright chord, I heard a soft sound behind me.

Akane was clapping.

It was a small, quiet, profoundly sincere applause. In that dark, empty room, illuminated only by city lights, the sound of her hands clapping together was the most beautiful, validating sound I had ever heard.

"You are incredible," she whispered into the dark. "You clearly play like a pro."

I felt a hot flush of heat rush to my cheeks that made me close the piano lid and stand up.

"I'm nothing special," I mumbled, rubbing the back of my neck.

Akane then stood up from the bed and walked across the short distance between us, stopping mere inches away, forcing me to look down into her eyes.

"You are special to me, Shin," she said, her voice fierce and absolute. "From now on, I want you to start doing the things you love. I could feel that music is your passion, so I'll demand a performance from you every single day, okay?" Akane said, gently caressing my cheek. "You must live again, Shin."

My heart executed a violent, soaring leap against my ribs after hearing her words. She made me happy.

Then... I don't know who moved first; maybe it was me, pulled forward by the irresistible gravity of her gaze. Maybe it was her, stepping into my space.

In a fraction of a second, we were standing chest to chest. I bowed my head, and our foreheads touched.

Our breathing synchronized instantly, mixing in the small space between our lips. The scent of sandalwood and peppermint washed over me, intoxicating and familiar.

"Shin..." she whispered.

"Akane."

Her hand moved up in the dark, her fingers finding mine. She intertwined our hands, squeezing tightly.

Then, she stepped back, pulling me with her toward the bed.

"I-It's late," she murmured, her voice thick and raspy.

"I know."

"We should go to sleep. We have school tomorrow."

"I know."

But neither of us made a move to get under the covers. I stood there, looking at her, feeling a familiar, heavy, burning heat begin to coil tightly in the pit of my stomach.

Akane let out a low, tired, genuinely happy laugh.

"We are completely insane, I guess," she murmured, shaking her head.

"Probably," I agreed.

She then let go of my hand, but she didn't walk away. Her hands moved down to the hem of my oversized black t-shirt she was wearing.

There was no embarrassment and no frantic, adrenaline-fueled rush like the night before. There was only the calm, deliberate certainty of two people who knew exactly who they belonged to, and who knew they were finally home.

She pulled the t-shirt over her head and tossed it onto the desk chair, revealing her beautiful, naked, and toned physique.

I did the same, stripping off my shirt and tossing my jeans onto the floor.

We climbed into the bed, sliding under the heavy duvet.

The contrast of her cool skin pressing against my hot chest sent a violent shiver of pure electricity down my spine.

We tangled our legs together instantly, seeking out each other's heat in the cold room.

Akane immediately curled into my side and rested her head flat on my bare chest, right over my heart, and draped her arm across my stomach.

I wrapped my arms securely around her, pulling her as close as physically possible. I buried my face in her dark hair, inhaling deeply.

My body was practically vibrating.

The friction of her bare skin against mine was agonizingly perfect, and my mind was already racing, anticipating the heat, the touch, the surrender.

Moreover, Akane's index finger was tracing small patterns against my chest, and that was making me crazy. Her touch felt so amazing.

In that moment, I wanted her. God, I wanted her so badly it hurt.

"No sex tonight, ghost boy," she murmured, her voice muffled against my chest, thick and heavy with impending sleep.

I froze. My brain short-circuited for a second.

"Okay," I managed to say, though my voice cracked slightly, heavy with a very obvious, undeniable disappointment.

I felt her chest vibrate against mine as she let out a silent, wicked chuckle.

"Tonight, I just want to sleep exactly like this," she whispered, shifting her weight, intentionally pressing her bare thigh flush against my rapidly hardening arousal.

"Okay," I repeated, my voice a strained, desperate rasp. It was the only word I could physically form.

Despite her words, I had the feeling that she didn't mean them. She was probably teasing me, I could feel it.

Her hand then moved across my stomach, her fingers finding mine under the covers. She squeezed my hand tightly, anchoring me to her.

"Goodnight, Shin," she purred, the smirk practically audible in her voice.

"...Goodnight, Akane," I groaned, closing my eyes, knowing sleep was going to be completely impossible for the next few hours.

I lay there in the dark.

Her breathing eventually slowed, falling into a deep, regular rhythm. Her body grew incredibly hot, heavy, and undeniably real against mine.

And as I lay there, feeling the agonizing, beautiful torture of wanting her, I realized something profound.

For the very first time in seven long years, as I lay in the dark, I didn't think about tomorrow.

I only thought about the present, about her, about us.

I closed my eyes, trying to suppress the burning desire coiling in my gut, but that was... useless.

And then, Akane made the situation infinitely worse.

She shifted beside me, muttering something in her sleep about the pillow being too flat, before turning onto her side, with her back pressing against my chest.

Then, she curled into a fetal position, tucking her knees up toward her stomach.

And in doing so, she deliberately—or so it felt—pressed the curve of her bottom directly against my arousal.

"Mmmh," she hummed softly, wriggling her hips slightly, as if searching for a more comfortable position.

A comfortable position... Right.

I bit my lower lip so hard I tasted blood.

'Ah... damn...'

She knew exactly what she was doing. There was no way she didn't.

Her breathing was still slow and even, feigning sleep, but I could feel the subtle tension in her body—the way her muscles remained slightly rigid, the way her heartbeat was just a fraction too fast against my chest.

She was teasing me. Torturing me. And she was probably enjoying every second of it.

I didn't move. I didn't dare. But I also didn't pull away.

I just lay there, holding her, burning for her, wondering how I had gotten lucky enough to be tormented by the most beautiful, most infuriating girl I had ever met.

And despite the ache in my body, despite the impossibility of sleep, I smiled.

Because she was here, and she was real. Because, in those moments, she was mine.

'I don't think I'll be able to hold back... damn...'
