Resonance System: X Marks The Bond
Chapter 95 Episode 95: Love
Akira’s POV
Sena found me near the back tables of the canteen after the midday rush. She sat down across from me without asking if the seat was free. Her tray held only a drink and a small plate she did not touch.
I kept eating because stopping would make the moment feel heavier. She watched me for a short time in silence. The noise of the canteen filled the space between us.
"Are you in love with him?" she asked.
The question landed without warning. My hand paused with the fork halfway to the plate. I set it down carefully and met her eyes.
"No."
She looked at me without speaking. The look was steady and patient. It made the single word feel thin and incomplete.
"I don’t know," I said after a longer pause.
She kept looking at me. The silence stretched and pressed against my chest. My ears felt warm under the attention.
"It’s complicated," I added.
Sena leaned back slightly in her chair. Her expression stayed calm and direct. She did not seem surprised by any of the answers.
"Well it sure doesn’t look uncomplicated from out here," she said.
I frowned and pushed the plate away a little. The food no longer held any interest. Her words sat in the middle of the table between us.
"What does it look like?" I asked.
She answered without hesitation. "It looks like someone who keeps being surprised that another person is consistently exactly who they said they were."
I had no reply ready. The description hit a place I had not examined closely. I stared at the surface of the table while the words settled.
Sena did not push further. She finished her drink in a few swallows and stood up. Her hand rested on my shoulder for a brief second before she left.
I stayed at the table for a long time after she walked away. The canteen noise continued around me. My own thoughts turned louder than the voices.
Surprised that another person is consistently exactly who they said they were. The line repeated itself without effort. I could not find the place where it was wrong.
Kael had said he would stay during the long recovery. He stayed. He had said he would be there for the Death God contact. He waited outside the gate even when the quest forced me to go alone.
He had said the rumors needed to end. He took me to the auction house and placed a clear claim on me in front of everyone. He bought the high-end tech because I looked at it for three seconds.
Every promise matched the action that followed. I kept waiting for the gap to appear. The gap never came.
Emotion moved through me in slow waves. Confusion sat at the center. Guilt followed close behind because I had answered Sena with uncertainty when the pattern was already clear.
Fear mixed with the other feelings. Accepting the full truth of what I felt would make the pairing even more real. The public attention already weighed on me. Adding a settled name to it felt like another layer of exposure.
I finally stood and carried my tray to the return counter. My hands moved through the motions without much thought. The conversation stayed fixed in the middle of my mind.
The rest of the afternoon passed in ordinary tasks. I checked supply lists and signed two low-level reports. The words on the pages barely registered while Sena’s description kept turning over.
I walked the long corridor toward the training wing. Hunters still glanced at me with the new pointed interest born from the pairing. The attention felt sharper after the canteen conversation.
In the yard I tried to lose the thoughts inside physical drills. Sweat built across my back and shoulders. The movement helped only a little.
Kael arrived near the usual time. He joined my space without ceremony and began the partner forms we had practiced for weeks. His corrections stayed precise and consistent.
I watched him while we worked. He was exactly the person he had always presented. Steady. Direct. Present when he said he would be present. The surprise Sena named rose again in my chest.
We stopped for water after a long set. He handed me the flask first. The small automatic care matched everything else he did.
"You’re quiet today," he said.
"Just thinking. Sena asked me something directly at midday today."
He waited without pressing. I almost told him the full question. The words stayed behind my teeth because I was not ready to hear my own answer out loud again.
"She made an observation I cannot argue with," I said instead. "It has stayed with me."
Kael nodded once. He accepted the boundary without disappointment. That acceptance was another example of the consistency that kept surprising me.
We finished the session in lighter drills. My body moved through the forms while my mind stayed on the canteen table and Sena’s voice. The emotional weight did not lift.
After training I returned to my room and sat on the bed. The anagram screenshot from the day before still sat in my messages. The pairing talk in the forums continued without me opening the threads.
I thought about the Death God registration and the hunter community registration side by side. Both had happened without my full control. Both made me more visible than I had ever planned to be.
Love was the word Sena had used. I had said no and then I didn’t know and then it’s complicated. None of those answers felt solid after hours of turning them over.
What I felt when Kael stayed through the unconscious week was deeper than gratitude. What I felt when he kissed my forehead in the auction house was deeper than relief. What I felt when he waited outside the gate was deeper than safety.
I lay back and stared at the ceiling. The emotions sat in layers. Confusion. Growing recognition. Fear of the size of it. A quiet warmth that refused to disappear even when I tried to push it down.
I could not find the refutation Sena’s words required. Kael remained exactly who he said he was. I remained the person who kept expecting the pattern to break.
Evening light moved across the floor. I made a simple meal and ate it slowly. The ordinary actions gave my hands something to do while the thoughts continued.
Gleam stayed silent. She offered no comment on human feelings. The struggle belonged to me alone.
I washed the dishes and set them to dry. Then I stood at the window and watched the complex lights come on one section at a time. The day felt longer than the clock showed.
Kael sent a short message asking if I needed anything. I answered that I was fine and resting. The truth was more tangled than that single word.
I sat in the chair near the window with my knees drawn up. Sena’s description played again and again. Someone who keeps being surprised that another person is consistently exactly who they said they were.
That someone was me. The surprise had lived under every major moment since the recovery. I had never named it until she did.
Emotion tightened my throat for a moment. I swallowed it down and kept breathing. Accepting the feeling would change how I stood beside him in public and private.
The pairing was already registered in the community. The Death God network already knew my name. Adding a clear internal truth to those facts felt like stepping across a line I could not step back from.
I stayed in the chair until the room grew fully dark. No refutation arrived. The observation remained true no matter how I turned it.
Sleep came late and restless. Dreams mixed the canteen conversation with the gate pressure and the auction house kiss. I woke up more than once with the same words in my head.
Morning light finally arrived. I rose and prepared for the day the same way I always did. The conversation with Sena and the long hours of thought walked with me into the corridor.
I still had no clean answer to the original question. The lack of a refutation had become its own kind of answer. Kael remained consistent. My surprise at that consistency remained equally consistent.
The day would continue with training and missions and public eyes. I would carry the unsettled feeling through all of it. There was nothing else to do but keep moving while the truth settled into place at its own speed.
Sena had seen the shape of it from the outside. I was still learning the shape of it from the inside. The gap between those two views had narrowed over the course of a single long day and night.
I stepped into the flow of the morning without resolving the emotion completely. The lack of resolution stayed honest. Honesty was the only ground I trusted while everything else around the pairing kept shifting and growing.
