Akira’s POV

The gate cluster looked normal on the board. I read the listing twice before I left. There were very low activities, no clear edges and no warning labels listed.

I told Kael only one part of the quest. It had to be solo. He heard that word and still said he would be there. I walked to the cluster alone because the system gave me no other choice.

My steps felt heavy on the way. The air outside the gates smelled ordinary. Inside my chest the fear already sat there waiting quietly.

I checked my gear one last time at the entry point. The small book of basic notes hung at my hip. Nothing about it felt useful for what was coming.

The outer layer closed around me when I stepped through. Air grew thick right away. Sound moved in odd short echoes. My skin tightened under the jacket.

I walked forward anyway. The usual steady hum of a gate was missing. A slow pressure took its place and pressed from every direction.

My breathing turned shallow. I kept my eyes on the path ahead. The threshold came into view sooner than I expected.

The Shinigami stood there. Death God. It had no right to be at the gate edge. Thresholds stayed empty. This one held a presence that made my mouth go dry.

I stopped hard. Fear shot straight up my spine and spread cold through my chest. My hands twitched toward a weapon I never drew.

The system had given one clear rule. Stand still. Survive the contact. Running or fighting would break the quest. I forced my feet flat on the stone. Shoulders down. Hands open. The book at my hip felt like dead weight.

The Death God turned its full attention toward me. Pressure jumped higher. It felt like something pushed against my ribs and spine from the inside.

Terror weakened my legs. Every instinct told me to move. I locked my knees and stayed rooted. Time changed. Four seconds stretched into something much longer. Each one dragged across my nerves like rough cloth.

The Death God looked straight at me. Not at the book. Not at my clothes or the gate marks. At me. The focus landed heavy and complete.

I felt opened. Strength, fear and every private thought lay bare under that gaze. Nothing stayed hidden. My lungs worked too fast. I kept pulling air because stopping was not allowed. Sweat ran cold down my back and sides.

Kael’s promise cut through the fear for a second. He had said he would be here. The solo order had locked him out. Guilt slid in beside the terror and sat heavy.

The Death God did not move closer. It only looked. The pressure sank deeper into my bones. I thought my legs would fold. I ordered them to hold.

My vision narrowed at the edges. I fixed my eyes on a single point of stone and refused to blink too long. The gaze kept pressing. Then the attention lifted. The Death God pulled back and faded from the threshold. Space rushed into the empty place it left.

I stayed on my feet. Fine shakes ran through my arms, legs, and hands. My shirt stuck to my skin with cold sweat. The gate layer fell silent. There were no other hunters and I couldn’t feel the wind. Only the leftover feeling of being fully seen.

I dragged air into my chest. Each breath scraped a little. The fear did not leave with the Death God. It stayed thick in my stomach and throat.

My hands rose and covered my face. Fingers trembled against my skin. I held them there until the worst of the spinning slowed. I had lived through it. That fact felt distant. My mind was still trapped inside those four stretched seconds.

The look kept replaying. The weight of it. The sense that every corner of me had been measured. The clear knowledge that the system had aimed at me at this exact moment.

Anger rose under the fear. The system had shaped my strength and mana until I carried enough presence. Then it sent me alone to be recognized by a Death God.

I lowered my hands and stared at the empty threshold. The creature was gone. The wrong feeling in the gate air stayed behind. My legs shook hard. I made them hold my weight. Sitting down too soon felt like I would lose the last piece of control I had.

Kael waited outside. He would see my face and know. The solo rule had kept him safe from the pressure. I felt glad and guilty in equal measure.

I wanted his hands on me more than anything. I also never wanted him to feel what had just pressed through my body. Both wants pulled at once and left me exhausted.

The system’s window opened at last.

[Host Contact survived]

[Quest complete]

The words were plain and short. They carried none of the shaking that still moved through my muscles. I watched them fade into nothing.

My knees gave out. I dropped onto the gate floor. Cold stone pressed through my pants and into my skin. I sat with my arms loose on my knees. Breathing stayed uneven and loud in the quiet. The empty layer stretched out around me on all sides.

Relief came in small slow pieces. I was alive. The Death God had looked and then left. The quest was finished and my body was still whole.

Fear stayed larger than the relief. It filled my chest and stomach and the back of my mouth. The four seconds kept turning over behind my eyes.

I wrapped my arms around myself. The braids Gleam had made brushed my neck with every small movement. They felt like the only soft thing left in the layer.

My eyes burned. I blinked hard and stared at the stone between my feet. It was solid. I was still sitting on it. I told myself to stand and walk out. My legs refused the order. They needed more time before they would carry me.

Loneliness settled hard. The solo rule had done exactly what it was meant to do. I met the recognition alone. Kael would read the truth on my face the moment I stepped outside.

Love for him mixed with the leftover terror. He would want to know what happened. I did not know how many details I could give without pulling him deeper into the same fear.

I put my forehead down on my knees. The position helped a little. I listened to my own breathing until it slowed by a fraction. The system had gotten what it wanted. A Death God had recognized me. I had stood still and lived. The cost was the deep tremor that refused to leave my arms and legs.

I stayed folded like that for a long time. No new sound entered the layer. No second presence returned to the threshold. When I finally lifted my head the gate still looked empty. The pressure was gone. Only the memory of it remained.

I pushed up onto my knees first. Then I forced myself onto my feet. Balance swayed and then held by pure will. I took one step toward the exit layer. Then another. Each step felt thick and unsteady.

The fear walked with me. The plain fact that I had survived walked with me too. They stayed side by side without mixing. Light from the outside world began to show ahead. Ordinary sounds started to leak back in. Voices. Footsteps. The normal noise of the complex.

I stepped through the final layer and into the open air. My legs shook so hard I had to put a hand on the wall to stay upright. Kael was right there. He moved toward me the instant he saw my face. Worry and love already filled his eyes.

I could not find words at first. He closed the distance fast. His hands settled on my shoulders and took most of my weight.

"It’s done," I said. My voice came out thin and rough. "I survived."

His grip tightened. He pulled me against him and held me up. I let my forehead rest on his shoulder while the last of the gate cold left my skin. My hands clutched the back of his jacket. The shakes were still there. He felt them and only held on tighter.

The Death God had seen me. I had stayed still and lived. The rest of the fear would take days to loosen its hold.

I stood inside the circle of his arms and let the simple truth settle over me. I was still here. He was here with me on the other side of the gate. For the moment those two facts were enough to keep me standing.

He did not ask questions right away. He just kept holding me while my breathing slowly matched his. The solid feel of him pushed the leftover terror back by a small degree.

I had walked into the gate alone. I walked out of it into his hands. The quest was complete. The cost still lived in my body. I let him carry part of the weight while I remembered how to stand without the stone floor under me.
