Resonance System: X Marks The Bond
Chapter 88 Episode 88: Shinigami
Akira’s POV
The quest arrived in the quiet hours before dawn.
I was alone in the small room Kael had given me near the recovery suite. My body still carried the last aches from the long sleep. The new sense of mana in the air moved around me in soft currents. I had been practicing the slow pull of it when the system window opened without warning.
[Quest: Survive contact with a Shinigami]
[Objective: Survive]
[Failure condition: Death]
I read the words twice. The cold that followed them felt different from every earlier quest. It was the cold of something held back until the exact moment the system decided I could carry it. I still did not want to carry it.
Survive contact. Not kill. Not clear a dungeon. Only survive. The wording left no room for victory conditions beyond staying alive. I sat on the edge of the bed and let the window fade. My hands stayed still on my knees while the meaning settled deeper.
I did not tell Kael.
The choice formed fast and solid. He had already spent a week watching me breathe through machines. He had already faced council questions and corridor rumors because of me. Adding this quest to the weight he carried felt wrong. I would handle the knowledge alone for now.
The fear sat heavy in my chest. Shinigami were not ordinary threats. Even the lower ones moved in ways that broke normal patterns. Contact alone had ended hunters stronger than the rank on my public file.
The system waited until my internal strength and mana control rose before it delivered the task. That fact did not make the task feel safer. It only made the timing feel deliberate.
I stood and pulled on a simple jacket. The corridors were mostly empty at this hour. I walked without hurry toward the old archive annex where Gleam preferred to rest when she was not needed in the spirit well. The air mana answered when I reached for a thin thread of it. The steady pull helped keep my steps even.
Gleam was already waiting when I opened the door. She had changed.
The small bright form I knew was gone. In its place stood a woman with long dark hair and calm eyes. Her figure was soft and strong at the same time.
A warm elegant air moved around her that did not belong to ordinary people. She watched me with the same quiet attention she had always given me in her spirit shape.
"You felt the quest," she said. Her voice was clear and low.
"Yes." I closed the door behind me. "Survive contact with a Shinigami."
She nodded once. The movement made her hair shift across one shoulder. I could still sense the dragon nature under the human shape.
The increase in my power and the way I now drew mana from the air had given her enough strength to take this form. The system had never explained the link. I did not ask for the explanation now.
"I will stay with you," she said.
I sat on the low bench near the wall. Gleam sat beside me. For a long time neither of us spoke. The room held only the soft sound of our breathing and the distant quiet of the building.
The fear did not leave. It sat in my stomach like cold water. I kept seeing the words of the quest. Survive contact. The system had judged me ready enough to face it and still too incomplete to win beyond survival. The gap between those two judgments felt wide and sharp.
Gleam lifted one hand and then paused. Instead of using her fingers she shifted a portion of her form. A slender length of scaled tail appeared and moved with careful grace. She began to separate small sections of my hair near my temple. The soft tugs were steady and familiar.
She had started this after the service road. She never explained why. When the worry sat too heavy she simply began the braids and kept going until my breathing slowed. The human form made the gesture look different but the comfort remained the same.
I let her work. Three full hours passed by the small clock on the shelf. Sometimes I spoke about the wording of the quest. Sometimes I stayed silent. Gleam listened without pressing for more than I offered. Her hands and the soft movement of her tail kept the braids neat and even.
"I did not tell him," I said after a long stretch of quiet.
"I know."
"He would try to stand in front of it."
"Yes."
"I cannot let him do that every time."
Gleam finished one small braid and started another. The warm air around her stayed constant. It eased the worst edges of the cold the quest had left in me.
"You are allowed to carry some things alone," she said. "You are also allowed to decide when that becomes too heavy."
I watched the floor while she worked. The guilt about secrecy mixed with the fear of the coming contact. Both feelings sat side by side and refused to cancel each other.
Kael had already paid too much for my silence and my injuries. Adding a Shinigami quest to his list felt like another debt I was not ready to place on him.
The hours moved without rush. Gleam braided section after section with the same calm focus. My hair grew heavier with the small neat plaits. The repeated motion gave my mind a simple rhythm to follow when the larger fear tried to rise.
I thought about the last time I had faced anything connected to Shinigami. The memory brought the taste of blood and the weight of the service road.
The system had watched me survive that and then raised the bar. Survive contact. The words left no path to glory. Only the demand to remain standing when the contact ended.
Gleam’s presence kept the spiral from growing too wide. Her human shape still carried the same steady loyalty she had shown in the spirit well. The elegant warmth around her made the plain archive room feel less cold. I did not thank her out loud. She already knew.
When the third hour ended she let the last braid rest against my neck. The scaled tail withdrew and her hand returned to its human shape. She sat back and looked at me with quiet eyes.
"The quest will not wait forever," she said.
"I know."
"You will not face the contact today."
"No."
"Then rest while you can. Draw the air mana in small amounts. Keep the body steady. When the time comes I will be there."
I nodded. The fear remained but it no longer felt like the only thing in the room. Gleam’s company had given it boundaries. The braids along my hair gave my hands something simple to touch when the thoughts grew sharp again.
I stood and stretched the stiffness from my shoulders. Gleam rose with me. In the human form she stood nearly as tall as I did. The warm elegant air moved with her and settled the last restless edges of the morning.
"I will return to the spirit well until you call," she said.
"Thank you for staying."
She gave a small almost-smile and the human shape began to fade. Light gathered and then folded inward until only the familiar bright spirit form remained for a moment. Then she slipped back into the well and the room returned to ordinary quiet.
I stayed alone for a few more minutes. The quest window stayed closed but the words remained clear in my mind. Survive contact with a Shinigami. The cold of that delivery still sat under my ribs. I carried it with me when I finally left the archive annex.
The corridors were busier now. I kept my pace even and my face calm. No one stopped me. The braids Gleam had made stayed hidden under the collar of my jacket. Their quiet weight reminded me that I had already sat with fear for three full hours and remained upright.
I returned to the small room and sat on the bed again. The air mana answered when I reached for it. I drew a thin steady stream and let it settle into my pool. The work was simple and controlled. It gave my hands and mind the same steady focus Gleam’s braiding had given them.
Kael would ask how I was when he saw me next. I would tell him I was healing and that the new mana sense continued to answer. I would not tell him about the quest. The decision still felt right even while the guilt of it stayed present.
The system had waited until I could handle the information. Handling it did not mean I had to share it at once. I would carry this one until the contact came or until the weight grew too heavy to keep alone. For now the braids in my hair and the quiet hours with Gleam were enough to keep the cold from spreading further.
I lay back on the bed and stared at the ceiling. The quest waited somewhere ahead. Survive contact. The words held no comfort. They only held the clear demand that I remain alive when the meeting ended.
I closed my eyes and kept breathing. The air mana moved around me in soft currents. Somewhere in the spirit well Gleam rested in whatever form she chose. The day continued outside the room. Inside it I sat with the new fear and the old determination and let both of them exist without forcing an answer.
The system had given the quest. I had received it. The next step would come when it came. Until then I would heal and train the small control I had and keep the knowledge close. The cold remained. It no longer ruled every thought.
I opened my eyes again and sat up. There was work to do that did not involve Shinigami. Supply checks. Light movement to keep the healing rib from stiffening.
The quiet practice of drawing mana from the air without draining myself. Ordinary steps that kept the body ready for the day the quest stopped being words on a window.
I stood and began those steps. The braids shifted softly against my neck with each movement. Gleam’s silent care stayed with me even while she rested. The fear of the coming contact stayed too. I carried both as I left the room and returned to the ordinary flow of the morning.
Survive contact.
I had read the words. I had sat with them for three hours. I was still standing. For now that was the only progress the quest required.
