Resonance System: X Marks The Bond
Chapter 83 Episode 83: Awake
Akira’s POV
The dark stopped feeling like normal sleep and turned into something else. There was no ground under my feet and no sky above me. Just a flat grey space that stretched forever without edges or distance. My hands looked like mine but cleaner, as if the recent injuries had been wiped clean.
I understood I was in limbo. A place with no dimensions. The knowledge settled in without any explanation. I was not alone.
He stood a short distance away. Same face, same build, same eyes. The original Akira, the one whose body I had been living in. He watched me with a cold, patient look.
"You took longer than I expected," he said. His voice matched mine but felt older. "I felt the masked men put you down. I felt the rib crack and you crawl to that shed. You still held on."
I stayed quiet at first. The system’s presence sat in the background like a thin wall between us and whatever waited outside the grey. A quest marker hovered at the edge of my mind. I left it closed. I already knew what this was about.
"You want your body back," I stated like I already knew why he was plaguing my dreams and nightmares.
"It was never yours to begin with." He stepped closer. "You are a passenger who forgot the seat was borrowed. I let you run the missions and climb the ranks. I even let you get soft with the Vixar heir. The elevation is coming and I will not face it as a guest."
He moved first. The space between us vanished and his fist caught my jaw hard enough to make the grey ring. I staggered and tasted blood that should not have been there. He followed with a knee aimed at the same rib that had been hurt on the service road. The pain flared bright and real.
I twisted, took the knee on my forearm, and drove an elbow at his throat. He blocked and we broke apart. There was no crowd and no rules. Only the two of us and the endless grey.
"You fight like someone who learned by surviving," he said, circling. "I fought like someone born for it. There is a difference."
He came in faster. Short, heavy strikes meant to overwhelm. I gave a little ground, let the first two glance off, caught the third, and answered with a low kick at his knee. He took the hit the old way, planting and enduring, then smiled as if the pain proved the body still belonged to him.
"That is my threshold," he said. "You have been living on my margins."
Anger cut through the pain. I stopped giving ground.
We crashed together in the middle of the grey. The fight turned rough and close. No clean forms. We traded damage like both of us were trying to outlast the other. His forehead smashed into my nose. Mine drove into his mouth.
Blood freckled the air and vanished. I locked an arm around his neck and tried to choke him down. He hammered punches into my side until the hold broke and I hit the non-ground hard.
I rolled and came up on one knee. He was already closing again. I caught his wrist, turned with the force, and threw him past me. He hit the grey, rolled, and was back on his feet faster than I expected. The next exchange was even tighter.
He feinted high and drove a fist into my stomach. Air left me in a rush. I answered with a rising elbow that caught him under the chin and snapped his head back.
We separated for a few seconds, both of us breathing hard. The grey around us stayed flat and endless. No walls to use. No objects to grab. Only the two of us and the shared knowledge of every weak point in this body.
He wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. "You improved. The training with Vixar shows. But improvement is not yours."
He rushed me again. This time I met him head-on. Our arms locked. We pushed against each other, feet sliding on surfaces that were not surfaces. He broke the lock first and drove a knee toward my midsection.
I twisted aside and the knee only grazed me. I grabbed the back of his neck and pulled him into a short, sharp headbutt. The impact made my own vision flash white. He staggered but did not fall.
I pressed the advantage. Three quick strikes to the body. He blocked two and took the third with a grunt. His counter came fast, a backhand that opened a cut along my cheekbone. Warmth ran down my face. Limbo made every injury feel twice as sharp.
The system marker pulsed stronger at the edge of my sight.
[Quest active: Reclamation]
[Objective: Overcome the residual claim]
[Failure condition: Permanent displacement]
If I lost here I would not wake up. The original would take the body. Everything waiting on the other side would end as a failed quest.
I refused that ending.
I wiped the blood from my cheek and reset my stance. He came in with a heavy overhand right. I slipped it, stepped inside, and drove my shoulder into his chest. We went down together. On the ground the fight turned even uglier.
He tried to mount and rain punches. I trapped one arm, bridged, and rolled us. Now I was on top. I dropped short elbows toward his face. He tucked his chin and took most of them on the forehead and arms. One got through and split his brow.
He bucked hard and reversed the position. His weight settled on my hips. A fist came down toward my face. I turned my head and the punch hit the grey beside my ear.
The non-ground did not soften it. I felt the shock through my skull. Another punch was already coming. I got my arms up and absorbed what I could while I worked a leg free. When the opening came I threw him sideways and scrambled clear.
We both stood again. Blood marked both of our faces now. My side ached deep where the rib had been damaged in the real world. His breathing was heavier than before. The endless grey watched without interest.
"You should have stayed under," he said. "The elevation does not need a divided host."
"I am not divided," I answered. "I am staying."
He attacked with everything left. The strikes came faster and less controlled. I used the defensive turns Kael had forced into me over those long mornings in the yard. I stopped planting and taking the damage. I redirected. I made his power travel past me instead of through me. Each clean turn seemed to frustrate him more.
He overcommitted on a wide hook. I stepped in, caught the arm, and used his own momentum to send him to the grey. He hit hard and rolled up slower this time. I did not give him room to recover. I closed and kept the pressure on. Short punches. Tight elbows. A knee when the angle opened. He blocked and covered but the damage was adding up.
We locked up again near what would have been the centre of the space. His forehead pressed against mine. Both of us were breathing like we had run for miles. His eyes were the same shape as mine and full of a cold, fading certainty.
"You got attached," he said through clenched teeth. "That weight will slow the elevation."
"Then I will carry the weight," I told him. "But I am sorry because I am not giving the body back."
The last stretch was pure attrition. He tried to create space and reset. I stayed close where my shorter work was stronger. He landed a solid uppercut that made my knees dip. I answered with a flurry of body shots that forced the air out of him.
He stumbled and I followed. A final exchange of heavy, tired punches left both of us swaying.
He gathered himself for one more rush. I saw the plant of his foot, the same endurance pattern I used to live by. Instead of meeting force with force I turned it. His weight carried past me. I hooked an arm around his neck as he went by and dropped my weight. We hit the grey together. I locked the choke and held on while he thrashed.
The residual claim surged. I felt the familiar drag that had pulled me back every time I tried to surface before. The limbo wanted to keep me. The original wanted the body. The system waited for a result.
I thought of Kael’s voice when he found me on the service road. I thought of the mornings in the training yard. I thought of the people still waiting on the other side of this grey.
I held the choke and poured every remaining piece of will into the simple act of staying. The grey began to crack. The original’s form flickered and lost density. His hands pulled at my arm with fading strength. His eyes widened with the shock of an ending he had not planned.
"I’m sorry. But I have people waiting for me," I said through my teeth.
He tried to speak and only managed a broken sound. Then the residual claim came apart. The original Akira dissolved into the grey and left nothing behind.
I watched as the system marker updated.
[Quest complete: Reclamation]
[Residual claim purged]
[Host stability restored]
[Initiating return sequence]
The grey folded in on itself.
Pain hit first. The real rib. The healing cuts. The deep tiredness of a body that had fought on two levels at once. Then sound. The low hum of medical equipment. The soft scrape of my own breathing. Then touch. Fingers wrapped tight around my hand, warm and steady.
I opened my eyes. And Kael was there.
He looked worn down in a way I had never seen. Hollow-eyed. Unshaven. The usual sharp control was gone. The moment my eyes focused on him the strain in his face cracked. His hand tightened hard around mine.
"Akira." His voice came out in broken sobs. Almost like he couldn’t believe the view in front of him.
My throat felt dry. The word came out rough and small. "I’m here."
He made a sound that was part relief and part something rawer and leaned forward until his forehead rested against mine. I felt him shaking. My free hand rose slowly and settled against the back of his neck.
"I couldn’t wake up," I whispered. "There was a fight. Inside. I had to win it before I could come back."
Kael pulled back just enough to look at me. His eyes were wet. He did not push for more details. He only took in the fact that I was speaking and looking at him on purpose.
"You’re back," he said, voice rough. "That’s enough for now."
I let my eyes close again. This time the dark was ordinary. The limbo was gone. The original’s claim was gone. The quest was finished. Kael’s thumb moved across my knuckles in a steady rhythm and the last of the cold finally left my limbs.
I was awake.
And the body I had fought for was mine again.
