The heavy oak doors of the cathedral groaned open, and I sauntered into the dark, echoing nave.
To be completely honest, I could have easily scavenged a heavy stone altar piece or a pile of pews to weigh down that Umbrella pressure plate so Rebecca didn’t have to sit her thicc, denim-clad ass in the dirt. But doing that would have taken extra time, and more importantly, I didn’t want my medic anywhere near this main hall when the next fight kicked off.
Call it trauma or whatever, but back in my old life when I played Resident Evil Zero, Rebecca was an absolute liability in this specific room. Her base health pool was pathetic, and she died if a B.O.W. so much as sneezed in her general direction. Granted, my current Rebecca was thoroughly marinated in my Progenitor Panacea—her bone density was basically organic Kevlar and her pipes were clogged with super-soldier serum—but old habits die hard.
And who was the lucky contestant waiting behind door number one?
A giant fucking bat.
Because of course it was. Resident Evil Zero had a severe lack of actual zombies and a terminal obsession with giant mutated pests. Giant leeches, giant centipedes, giant spiders, giant monkeys, and now a giant bat. Was this Resident Evil or Animal Evil? Did Umbrella’s entire B.O.W. budget go into a literal petting zoo of oversized, bloodthirsty fauna?
Still, I was actually anticipating this boss.
A bat can fly, you know? And what man hasn’t dreamt of kissing the skies? If I killed and absorbed this oversized flying rodent, there was a very real chance I could snag a set of leathery wings or some aerial mutation.
I stepped into the center of the cathedral, my heavy reptilian claws clicking against the stone floor. I looked up at the vaulted ceiling.
Silence.
Cricket noises.
Where the fuck is the boss?
The guy was supposed to crash through the cathedral’s roof after the player goes into a nearby side room and comes back out. But that was the game, right? Surely I didn’t need to—
The Infected Bat unloosed a deafening, glass-shattering screech that vibrated straight through my newly acquired reptilian skull.
Sonic attack?! What is this, Pokémon?!
It spread its massive, twelve-foot leathery wings and launched off the ruined altar, diving straight for my face.
Guided by sheer Hunter Alpha reflexes, I dropped my ass flat against the stone floor just as the giant flying rat whooshed through the air right where my eyes had been a second ago.
The bat banked hard, circling up toward the vaulted ceiling with heavy beats of its wings, hanging in the shadows with beady red eyes glowing like hot embers.
Yeah, I’d be pissed too if a choir chair gave me a concussion in my sleep.
I didn’t have a gun, and my giant scythe-claws made fine motor skills an absolute joke, so I looked around for the next best ranged weapon. A heavy brass candlestick was resting on a side table. Snatching it up with my clumsy talons, I reared back and hurled the metal javelin straight at the hovering pest.
The bat tilted its body with an agility no flying rodent had any business possessing. The brass missed by a mile, clanging loudly against the far wall.
It let out a series of mocking clicks before dive-bombing me again. I rolled out of the way, watching its talons gouge deep trenches into the stone floor.
Alright, this fucking thing has absurd I-frames.
I grabbed an entire wooden choir bench, my Hunter Alpha strength making the solid oak feel like cardboard. As the creature made another swooping pass, I swung the bench like a baseball bat.
The creature executed a mid-flight barrel roll, effortlessly dodging the heavy lumber. It circled right back, opening its jaws wide and lunging straight for my throat. I ducked just in time to catch the hot, rancid breeze of its breath against my scales as its teeth snapped shut with a heavy CLACK right by my ear.
Fuck this aerial bullshit.
I spotted a heavy stone gargoyle bust sitting on a decorative pillar. I hoisted the fifty-pound chunk of carved rock and launched it at the bat with everything I had.
The gargoyle sailed through the air like a cannonball.
The bat caught it. Mid-fucking-air.
It wrapped its foot-claws around the stone, hovered for a fraction of a second, and hurled the heavy projectile right back at me.
The stone slammed into my chest plates, sending me stumbling backward. Before I could regain my footing, the oversized rodent swooped down with terrifying speed. Its talons shot out and clamped like iron vices around my scaly ankles.
I let out a garbled, furious roar as my feet were violently jerked out from under me.
The bat flapped its massive wings, generating an insane amount of lift to haul my two-hundred-pound body off the floor. I thrashed wildly, my scythe-claws slicing empty air.
Oh shit, it’s going to drop me from the ceiling.
But the bat was way more sadistic than a standard AI mob. Instead of flying up, it leveled out three feet off the ground, flying at breakneck speed straight down the center aisle of the cathedral.
My upper body swung downward like a heavy pendulum, and my reptilian head and shoulders plowed right through the rows of solid oak pews.
Wood exploded in every direction. My thick green scales absorbed the worst of the impact, but my brain rattled inside my skull like a maraca. The sheer kinetic force of getting my face dragged through a dozen church benches left me disoriented and spitting splinters.
Reaching the end of the aisle, the bat finally let go, tossing my battered body into the front row. I tumbled over the broken wood, landing in a chaotic heap near a side shrine.
A deep, unfiltered, feral rage boiled up in my gut. The Hunter Alpha biology completely hijacked my brain.
I scrambled to my feet, spitting a mouthful of shattered oak, and locked my eyes onto a massive, heavy wooden statue of Jesus Christ mounted near the baptismal font. I violently ripped the savior off his pedestal, gripping his wooden legs like a Louisville Slugger.
The bat screeched, banking around for another low-altitude strafing run.
I planted my digitigrade feet, winding up with my holy bludgeon. The moment the bat swooped into range, I swung Jesus with the combined fury of a pissed-off gamer and a feral bioweapon.
The wooden statue connected dead center with the bat’s ribs. The sickening crunch of breaking bones echoed through the hall. The giant pest shrieked in absolute agony, its flight path violently disrupted as it crashed onto the stone floor in a tangle of leathery wings and fur.
I didn’t give it room to breathe. I threw my full weight on top of the struggling creature, raising my holy club high into the air.
I beat the absolute shit out of the bat with the Son of God. I just kept bringing the heavy statue down on its skull and shoulders, completely lost in a blind, bloody frenzy. Blood sprayed across the pews, coating my claws and scales. I didn’t stop swinging until the Jesus statue completely splintered into sharp, gore-soaked chunks of useless wood.
Tossing the broken savior aside, I pinned the thrashing monster to the floor. I dug my scythe-claws deep into the thin, leathery membrane of its right wing and violently yanked backward, tearing the connective tissue right off its skeletal arm. The wing shredded like wet paper. I moved to the left wing, hooking my claws in and ripping it completely apart to render the creature permanently grounded.
In a desperate, dying spasm, the bat kicked out with its powerful hind legs, catching my chest and launching me backward off its mangled body. I slid across the blood-coated stones, coming to a halt near the altar.
The bat scrambled upright, dragging its shredded wings behind it. It looked like a giant, furry potato trying to hobble away on toothpicks. It couldn’t fly. It couldn’t fight. It was just pathetically trying to crawl toward the side doors, leaving a thick trail of dark blood behind.
I pushed myself up, stalking after it with slow, deliberate steps. I closed the distance and raised my right arm.
My massive claw shot forward, punching clean through its furry back. The razor-sharp tips erupted out the front of its chest cavity in a spectacular spray of gore. The bat let out a choked, gurgling wheeze.
I rummaged around inside its chest cavity for a second, feeling a hot, slippery, pulsing mass. I clamped my talons around it and forcefully yanked my arm back.
The bat’s massive, fist-sized heart came out, still violently beating in my palm. Dark blood cascaded down my forearm, pooling on the floor. The giant creature twitched violently for a few seconds before collapsing into a motionless heap.
I brought the pulsing organ up to my lipless mouth and took a massive, unceremonious bite.
Warm, metallic, and surprisingly rich, it tasted like very gamey chicken.
I swallowed the raw muscle, chewing loudly in the dead silence of the cathedral. Blood was smeared across my face, dripping from my chin, and my entire torso was painted in thick, red viscera. The feral fog finally lifted from my brain, leaving behind a sudden wave of post-combat clarity.
Jesus.
I looked over at the splintered wooden cross and the absolute massacre surrounding me.
I really went completely apeshit there for a minute.
A massive, thunderous belch rumbled up from my stomach, echoing off the stained glass windows.
I shook my head, pressing my blood-soaked hand against the bat’s massive corpse. My chest plates unzipped with a wet squelch, and dozens of thick red tendrils aggressively blasted outward. They plunged into the dead meat, functioning like high-powered industrial vacuums. The massive carcass rapidly liquefied, the biomass slurping into my body in a glowing red slurry.
Within seconds, the boss was completely dehydrated, leaving behind nothing but a hollow, flaky skin.
The glowing blue holographic screens of the System immediately materialized in my peripheral vision, cheerfully interrupting my quiet moment of post-massacre reflection.
[Target Eliminated. Biomass Absorbed.
Unique Biological Entity Registered: Infected Bat.
Description: A naturally occurring mammal infected by a variant of the t-Virus. It has grown to massive proportions and possesses heavily enhanced muscle mass, allowing it to easily lift human-sized prey.
Highly aggressive and territorial, though biologically fragile compared to purpose-built Umbrella B.O.W.s. ]
[Evolution Points Earned: +500 EP.]
I stared at the glowing blue text in absolute disbelief.
Are you shitting me? Five hundred points for a goddamn boss fight? I practically got a concussion and dragged my face through a dozen mahogany pews for the equivalent of a mid-tier loot drop.
Before I could aggressively complain to the System manager about the terrible exchange rate of my suffering, the screen refreshed with the latest shop additions.
[Evolution Shop updated. New Mutations Available
<I Am Batman> — 200 EP
Description: The host can rapidly secrete and expel dozens of small, harmless infected bats from the pores of their back and shoulders. These bats deal zero combat damage and serve absolutely no tactical purpose, but they provide an impeccable, highly dramatic gothic aura for intimidating your foes.]
Well, that’s incredibly stupid. I’ll probably buy it later.
[Mutation: Bat’s Echolocation — 150 EP
Description: Grants the host biological sonar capabilities through high-frequency squeaks, allowing for precise aerial navigation and environmental mapping in pitch darkness.]
I tilted my scaly head, wiping a smear of bat blood off my snout.
Isn’t that just a bootleg version of the Clicker echolocation I already rolled from the gacha? Convergent evolution or whatever multiversal asset-flipping this System uses, I guess.
I completely ignored the redundant traits. Rubbing my blood-soaked scythe-claws together in greedy anticipation, I exited the mutation tab and navigated straight to the main attraction: the Form section.
[Current Biological Forms Available: ]
[t-Virus Zombie (Common) — Owned ]
[Cerberus / MA-129 (Uncommon) — Owned ]
[Infected Scorpion - 800 EP]
[Plague Crawler (Uncommon) — 300 EP ]
[Centurion Centipede (Rare) — 1000 EP ]
[Mutated Spider - Black Tiger Variant (Uncommon) — 500 EP ]
[Hunter Alpha (Semi-Epic) — Owned ]
[Infected Bat (Rare) — 1300 EP]
I let out a low, rumbling hiss through my teeth.
Damn. This oversized rat is pricey as fuck for a Rare-tier form. Especially considering my wallet is sitting at exactly 1,369 EP right now.
Buying it would completely bankrupt me. I’d be left with a pathetic sixty-nine points to my name. But the sheer tactical advantage of untethered flight in a survival horror setting was impossible to ignore. No more getting bottlenecked in puzzle rooms. No more wandering through subterranean sewage.
Eh, fuck it. We ballin’.
I mentally slammed the purchase button.
