Chapter 1601 -67: Extreme Cold

Two days later, Su Xiao was riding on Bubu Wang’s back, followed closely by the quickly running A Mu.

The bitter cold wind blew, sweeping up a flurry of snow. Su Xiao had reached the North Border, situated on a snowfield called Nitani. Upon reaching the snowfield, Bubu Wang was the happiest.

“Nitani Snow Plain, soon.”

Su Xiao put away the map in his hand. According to the information revealed before Mo Yi·Nora’s death, the Death Land was located on a mountain of ice deep in the North Border.

In fact, upon reaching Nitani Snow Plain, no civilians from the North Border could be seen. The North Border is three times the size of the Central Plains and twice the size of the Southern part. Over 70% of this area is uninhabitable.

After arriving at Nitani Snow Plain, Su Xiao found that daytime temperatures could reach as low as minus 52°. At this temperature, even a spittle would freeze into ice before hitting the ground.

Bubu Wang and A Mu were completely unconcerned with the temperature here, even wanting to lie in the snow for a nap, while Su Xiao relied on his strong constitution to withstand the cold.

The sky was a vast expanse of white, and the sun was nowhere to be seen. Nitani Snow Plain was in a polar day zone, where the dark night only lasted 2 to 3 hours.

The environment here was already harsh, but Su Xiao had to continue deeper into the snowfield, to reach the Permafrost Sea, a place even the North Border people wouldn’t go.

On the border of Nitani Snow Plain, the wind and snow were howling. Zang Ge was trudging through the snow, his once formidable presence now gone. His face was covered with gray-white soot, and the beast skin he wore was tattered. If anyone said he was scavenging, people would believe it.

Zang Ge grabbed a handful of snow and stuffed it into his mouth, crunching on it. His current appearance no longer resembled that of an assassin from the Void.

Deep in the snowfield, Su Xiao took out some fresh water from his Storage Space. After just a couple of sips, the water in the bottle froze into a lump of ice.

The temperature had already reached a terrifying minus 67°, but it was still manageable for Su Xiao to maintain his body temperature.

By now, Su Xiao understood why the Mo Yi Family heirloom was meant for cold resistance. The family’s strength was clearly related to the Death Land. Given the temperature in Nitani Snow Plain, they didn’t need to guard the Death Land, or rather, they couldn’t.

The temperature in Nitani Snow Plain was already so low that witches could freeze to death upon reaching the Permafrost Sea.

The low temperature of the snowfield was certainly dangerous. But fortunately, there were almost no living creatures here. Apart from being pursued from behind, Su Xiao had an unimpeded journey.

As the temperature quickly dropped, Bubu Wang carried Su Xiao to the edge of the snowfield. To the naked eye, it still appeared as a snowfield, but upon scraping away the snow, one would find a frozen sea surface beneath.

The Permafrost Sea had been reached. As soon as they stepped into the Permafrost Sea area, Bubu Wang trembled. Even Bubu Wang felt cold here, though A Mu remained unaffected.

Su Xiao took out a thermometer from his chest, the bright red minus 79° revealing just how cold the Permafrost Sea was.

“Almost there. Hang in there.”

Su Xiao patted Bubu Wang’s back. Bubu Wang seemed to feel that as a Snow King, feeling cold was a bit embarrassing. It shook its head, indicating it wasn’t cold at all.

Two hours later, a staggering figure entered the Permafrost Sea area. Zang Ge’s lips were somewhat quivering. The Bajing Clan could adapt to most harsh environments and even survive in oxygen-free environments. Flames of several thousand degrees were just warming them, but their resistance to cold seemed lacking against low temperature.

“I am, a warrior, just a little cold…”

Zang Ge hugged his arms, his teeth chattering at a rate of over ten times per second.

“Ah, ah, achoo!”

Zang Ge let out a loud sneeze, shaking off the surrounding snow. After sniffing hard, he continued forward. Though reckless, his persistence deserved respect.

…

The cold wind moaned like ghosts. Su Xiao wore a cold-proof suit. The surrounding temperature of minus 105° was no joke. At this temperature, steel would transform from ‘Austenite’ to ‘Martensite,’ meaning simply that steel would become brittle like glass.

Tap-tap-tap…

Strange sounds came. Su Xiao leaned down to look at Bubu Wang in front of him.

“Bubu, put on the cold-proof suit if you feel cold.”

“Woof~”

Bubu Wang barked, indicating it wasn’t cold at all. Yet, the tap-tap-tap sound just now was clearly its teeth chattering.

Bubu Wang quietly sniffled; it was almost frozen.

The further they went, the lower the temperature dropped. After venturing deep into the Permafrost Sea, the temperature decreased from minus 105° to minus 178°.

With a crisp crack, Su Xiao felt a gust of cold wind enter through his shoulder. The Protona Microorganism Cold Protection Suit had frozen and cracked!

Subzero temperatures differed from flame temperatures—once they exceeded minus 150°, they became increasingly terrifying. Short exposure might be manageable, but long-term exposure required a very strong physique.

When the temperature reached minus 273°, it was a qualitative change. Minus 273° was known as absolute zero, where the thermal motion of internal molecules would completely stop, becoming motionless.

Given the current trend, continuing deeper into the Permafrost Sea, temperatures below minus 200° could happen at any moment.

“Woof~”

Bubu Wang in front of Su Xiao let out a low bark, meaning: “Master, quickly give me a cold-proof suit. It’s too cold; I can’t pretend anymore.”

“Too late.”

Su Xiao tapped on his arm’s cold-proof suit. With a crisp crack, the entire suit shattered. At minus 197°, the cold-proof suit made its sacrifice.

Bubu Wang’s mouth still emitted the tap-tap-tap sound. Shortly after, Su Xiao clenched his teeth. Without doing so, he’d also start chattering soon.

Beside Su Xiao and Bubu Wang, A Mu’s scene changed—this guy was munching on a beast leg. The meat now had a texture similar to soda cake—very crispy. Judging from A Mu’s appearance, it seemed like it was vacationing in the Extreme Cold Zone…

“A Mu, don’t you feel cold?”

Su Xiao tightened his coat, and A Mu looked at him, puzzled.

“I’m not cold, what is cold,”

“…”

“…”

Su Xiao and Bubu Wang said nothing, continuing against the cold wind and snow. By now, riding Bubu Wang wasn’t an option anymore, as stamina drain would lead to decreased body temperature, endangering it.

Three hours of continued travel later, the temperature reached minus 225°, and moving forward, Su Xiao began to feel the cold piercing his bones. Bubu Wang was running in circles to generate body heat.

Boom!

An Alchemy Bomb exploded. Su Xiao and Bubu Wang quickly reached the explosion’s flames, but… it was of little use.

“It’s around here.”

Su Xiao patted the snow on his head. According to Mo Yi·Nora, the Death Land was on top of an iceberg, and the iceberg was nearby.

Su Xiao didn’t have to search for long before seeing the iceberg amidst the swirling snow. Or rather, it was hard to miss. The iceberg was enormous, easily thousands of meters high, with an endless length.

Reaching the base of the iceberg, Su Xiao glanced at the thermometer in his hand, then threw it away. It was indicating an unmeasurable result, fixed at minus 235°.

Looking up at the iceberg, the veins on Su Xiao’s hand bulged. With a crisp crack, he plunged his fingers into the hard ice.

After climbing just ten meters up, Su Xiao felt a sharp drop in temperature, with a layer of ice crystals forming on his body surface.

“Bubu, wait here, stay active, and if that guy comes, find a way to distract him.”

“Woof!”

Bubu Wang shivered as it barked. Next to it, A Mu held onto the rope dangling from Su Xiao’s waist, climbing upward. Here, A Mu’s combat strength peaked; it wasn’t affected by the low temperature.

Crack, crack…

Su Xiao gradually climbed upwards on the iceberg, exhaling white breath. The stabbing sensation of his fingers touching the solid ice was starkly clear. He couldn’t rush up; the higher he climbed, the lower the temperature. Rapidly gaining height here could lead to frost injuries from the sudden cold, perhaps even freezing solid and falling from the iceberg, shattering into pieces.
