Chapter 1585 - 51: Sunset Red Squad
Chapter 1585: Chapter 51: Sunset Red Squad
Leaving Holy Healing Church Headquarters, Su Xiao dragged his tired body towards an inn in the city.
Half an hour later, in a room on the third floor of Locke Inn, Su Xiao lit a cigarette. After a hearty meal, the warm feeling in his stomach made him drowsy.
A deafening snore came from the room next door, and Su Xiao extinguished the cigarette in his hand as he lay on the bed.
"Bu Bu, go tell A Mu to stop snoring."
Su Xiao glanced at the vibrating water cup on the nightstand; A Mu’s snoring in his sleep was like a mild earthquake.
Bubu Wang whimpered and kicked its legs, indicating it couldn’t do anything about A Mu’s snoring. A Mu doesn’t usually snore when he sleeps, but every time Su Xiao ’heals’ him, he snores for a few days.
"So annoying, can’t a person get a good night’s sleep?"
Meilodi’s angry voice came from outside the door, and shortly after, there was a knocking sound from the room next door. Before long, Meilodi’s voice gradually softened, faintly saying, ’Sorry to disturb your sleep, no no no, it doesn’t affect anything, you go ahead and sleep.’
Amidst the almost inaudible sounds, Su Xiao gradually fell into a deep sleep. Although it was a bit risky, if he didn’t rest well, his body wouldn’t hold up, and he still had to head to the southern part the day after tomorrow.
Su Xiao slept for nearly 20 hours. When he woke up, he felt refreshed. The left arm that had been faintly aching was fine now. With his body condition and deep sleep, the recovery of stamina was predictable.
On the wooden table in the room, various gun parts were neatly arranged, and D·Assassin and Duke of Extinction were both disassembled. Meilodi was curiously observing from the side.
"Are we going witch hunting again?"
Meilodi was very enthusiastic about witch hunting, mainly because she received a large sum of gold coins after the fall of Westport.
"That’s right."
Su Xiao removed the silencer from D·Assassin and started cleaning the flame residue inside.
"Where to this time? When it comes to understanding witches, even if it’s the southern part, I know some intel that the Holy Healing Church doesn’t."
"Is that so? Then let’s go south."
"..."
Meilodi turned to stone.
"I was just joking earlier, so were you, right? Yes, you must have been, hahaha, you really have a sense of humor; I didn’t see that before... boo~ I don’t want to."
Meilodi spoke with a slight sob in her voice. She was still young, hadn’t experienced romance, and didn’t want to die yet.
"This was your suggestion. As a collaborator, of course, your opinion must be respected."
"Oh, Great Witch Hunter, spare me, a weak woman. The southern part? That’s the Witch’s Country, a Witch’s Country without civilians."
"More witches also mean you can get more gold coins."
"I’ve suddenly lost interest in gold coins."
"..."
Su Xiao gave Meilodi a glance, and she immediately deflated.
"Are we really going south?"
After the initial panic, Meilodi squinted her eyes, smiling like a vixen. She’d noticed during her time with Su Xiao that he wouldn’t undertake anything he’s not confident about. The southern part, a human forbidden zone, wouldn’t be ventured into lightly, even by Su Xiao, a Blood Hunter.
"Perhaps."
"I knew it."
Meilodi exhaled a long breath, though she was still somewhat uneasy, she still didn’t believe Su Xiao would go witch hunting in the south.
Early the next morning, in the conference room on the third floor of the Holy Healing Church Headquarters, it was still in front of that severely bug-eaten square table.
Sitting on the wooden chair, Su Xiao was adjusting something, often wearing wireless earphones and listening intently, while Bu Bu Weng squatted by his feet.
Carmen sat smiling across from him. Yesterday, he experienced a new lease on life, resolving a grudge smothered in his heart for over a decade. After all, this time going south was likely a no-return mission.
With a creaking sound, the wooden door of the conference room was pushed open, and a one-eyed old man walked in. The old man was built like a bear, and the shotgun he carried could no longer be called a gun; it was practically a small-caliber cannon.
"Joshua, heard your daughter scolded you again recently?"
"Hmph, just an adopted daughter; I should have let her freeze to death on the street back then."
The bear-like old man, Joshua, snorted coldly, casually finding a spot to sit. It was clear his relationship with Carmen wasn’t harmonious, at least on the surface. After all, the two had fought side by side for most of their lives.
"Quite lively."
A ’middle-aged man’ walked into the conference room. Although he didn’t seem like an old man, his hair was already gray. Among the three old men, he was actually the oldest.
Seeing this old man, Su Xiao was somewhat surprised. He had seen this old man once when he rescued Meilodi from prison. At that time, the old man was snoring away drunkenly. If Su Xiao remembered correctly, he was the prison guard.
Gulu, gulu...
The guard had just sat down when he raised the wine bottle in his hand, took several gulps, and let out a wine burp.
"Only Gunte is missing. He shouldn’t be late, right? It’s been a while since we’ve seen him..."
Just as Carmen finished speaking, an emaciated old man pushed the door open and entered.
"Gunte, long time no see... huh~"
Carmen was about to greet him but noticed something was off about Gunte.
"Huh?"
Gunte looked at Carmen in confusion, his eyes clearly showing a hint of bewilderment. Beside him, the drunkard old man chuckled and pulled a shotgun from Joseph’s back.
"Gunte, catch this."
As soon as he finished speaking, the drunkard old man tossed the shotgun. In that instant, Gunte’s gaze sharpened, no longer bewildered, and he caught the shotgun in one hand.
Witch’s Grave Gunte, as the witches called him. Not only Gunte, but the other three old men also had their own titles, all earned through killing.
The drunkard old man was Ripoff·Clofinger.
The one-eyed old man was Blood Splash Bear Joshua.
As for Senator Carmen, he was called Bone Remover Carmen by the witches.
Witch’s Grave, Ripoff, Blood Splash Bear, Bone Remover—these names clearly showed the immense shadow these four had cast on the witches. It’s important to note that these titles weren’t self-proclaimed; they were given by the witches.
The most ruthless of the four was Witch’s Grave Gunte. Older witches knew one thing for sure—it was better to die in battle than to fall into the hands of Witch’s Grave, as that was a fate worse than death.
But the once formidable Witch’s Grave now suffered from dementia. Fortunately, it didn’t seem too severe; his eyes noticeably brightened when he gripped the shotgun.
Looking at these four old men, Bubu Wang felt a sudden apprehension. Carmen was a cripple, Joshua a one-eyed dragon, Clofinger a drunkard, and Gunte had dementia. This Sunset Red Squad going to hunt Misfortune made Bubu Wang anxious about the future.
However, a few minutes later, Bubu Wang dismissed such thoughts. The four old men might not have the stamina of their youth, but they had more experience and no fear of death.
"Old partners, this trip to the south might be a one-way ticket."
"Hmm."
"As long as there’s wine on the way, it’s fine."
"Better to die in the south while I’m sober than die old without glory."
It was clear these four weren’t afraid of death. A purely suicidal squad wasn’t terrifying; an experienced one with clear objectives was.
"Alright, let’s go see the Pope. There’s something we need to hand over to him."
Carmen picked up a cloth bag and stepped out.
The group traversed Holy Healing City without drawing attention and without any farewell ceremony. Forty minutes later, inside a stone room on the city wall.
A solemn middle-aged man sat upright in the stone room. Next to him sat a young boy, somewhat absent-minded, seemingly thinking of something else.
"That’s basically it, Laurent. We’re leaving."
Carmen and the other three old men sat opposite the middle-aged man. Hearing Carmen address the middle-aged man by his first name, the boy beside him was momentarily shocked. Clearly, he didn’t recognize Carmen, or rather, he didn’t have access to Carmen due to their differing power structures. Carmen rarely left the Holy Healing Church Headquarters, and they weren’t in the same hierarchy. Moreover, the boy’s power system wasn’t hereditary; he couldn’t inherit his father’s power unless he was very capable.
"Be careful on the road."
The middle-aged man was indeed the Pope of the Holy Healing Church, the leader of another branch of its power structure. The boy beside him was his son, not yet of age.
After Carmen and the other four old men joined Su Xiao, they quickly left the city. In the carriage, Meilodi’s face was pale. She had initially thought Su Xiao was joking about going south, but just a few minutes ago, she met the Pope of the Holy Healing Church! This clearly wasn’t a joke. The Pope personally seeing them off seemed to indicate they were truly heading south.
Atop the city walls, the Pope gazed at the two carriages gradually moving away. Beside him, the boy was full of doubt.
"Father, these people heading south, though brave, isn’t it just sending them to their deaths..."
"Watch your words."
The Pope glanced at his eighth son and ultimately just shook his head.
"They were in their prime when you were still in swaddling clothes. Not everyone loves fame and fortune. Remember these people. What they are doing is something we don’t have the courage to do, nor can we achieve. Besides, among these people is a Witch Hunter whom even Senator Carmen refers to as a monster—unimaginable."
