Chapter 1722: Quetzal Meets The Chief

Chapter 1722: Quetzal Meets The Chief

After arriving back at the Oasis Village and Agua’s home, dinner started being cooked right away, everyone was starving after all. Aquarina brought out some of the things they hunted, namely the giant flying fire ants, and explained to her parents and Agua’s mother what happened, with the help of her friends.

They first explained how Quetz had turned into a giant bird monster due to a blessing, or well, he called it a curse, from an ancient Great Spirit of Cliff Winds that existed here, before the Oasis people or the Great Spirit of the Oasis even arrived in this place.

This caused great unrest and surprise to the chief and the heroes in specific, realizing that there was such a formidable foe so close to the village made them realize that they’d been taking it too easy.

And also someone so ancient!

“This is our fault, for not having found him before… We never explored that area of the cliffs because they were so full of dangerous bird monsters and very high,” sighed the chief. “To think there was someone turned into a beast, for… perhaps thousands of years? I cannot begin to imagine what you’ve gone through, Quetzalcoatl… I am truly sorry in your behalf.”

“Ah, please, there’s nothing to be sorry about… It wasn’t your fault nor… well, your responsibility,” he sighed. “But I am grateful to your daughter and her friends… for beating me so hard I was finally freed from that form… Even though now, what I have done in such a monstrous appearance lingers in my head, as fragments of blurry memories… memories I don’t want to remember.”

“Hah, god damn it… You have my heartfelt condolences as well, boy,” Nepheline said, patting his shoulders with her big hand. “I… don’t want to imagine it either… It’s… hard I suppose. We just met, I know, but I want to tell you that we’re here for you, alright?”

“Yeah,” Shade nodded. “Someone as ancient as you must have a lot of things to say but perhaps… have a hard time even trying to express them. It is indeed a very hard thing to do, and I’m sorry in your behalf for what has happened to you as well… I also have many things I regret from my past… if you want to talk with someone, I am here for you.”

“I-I don’t know what to say… I never imagined to be greeted with so much hospitality, after… after thousands of years…” Quetzalcoatl muttered, surprised over the generosity and kindness of the people from the future. “Thank you…”

“Your tribe has been part of our culture for many generations,” said the chief. “Since we arrived here that we’ve known of your tribe’s existence. The paintings you left behind, the tableware and the small wooden idols or stone dolls, the small utensils and weapons. We always thought it was a pity we never got to know each other. We’ve talked, dreamed, and wondered about your kind for generations, my parents, and the parents of their parents… Let me tell you that your culture hasn’t been forgotten, we’ve gathered most of the things that belonged to your people underground, in a small… well, let’s call it a museum, usually in festivities, we let people enter, usually young people. We teach them of the past, which sometimes, can help us improve the present and work towards a good future.”

“I-I see…” Quetzalcoatl’s eyes shone brightly, realizing the things from his people weren’t all lost. “I would like to go there… one day, if possible.”

“Of course, we could go right now but I suppose you’re too hungry for that, how about tomorrow then, young man?” The chief asked with a gentle smile, reminding Quetzalcoatl of the cute smile of Agua, making him trust the woman very quickly.

“Y-Yes, I would like that… Thank you…” Quetz nodded gratefully.

“I know it’s hard to talk about these things too, about your past or what you had become, even of the spirit behind this,” said Nepheline. “So we won’t force anything into you if you don’t want to talk, boy. If you prefer to keep it down for now… we can.”

“No… I-It’s fine, I wouldn’t be trustworthy if I tried to hide my past…” Quetz said. “These things must be talked about; the truth must be revealed… keeping it a secret is not the right thing to do. The future generations must know of the past, of both our good times, and of our bad times, of innovations and of mistakes… Mistakes that might lead to similar situations in the present, if you don’t learn from the past.”

“Well said,” Shade nodded. “Very well, looks like the first batch of fish is ready… The meat is taking a little while. The meat of the Stone Rhinoceros was obviously not all that tender, but we’ve tenderized it a lot already. We’ve also minced some into burgers and meatballs, those should be done in a few more minutes I believe. The big steaks are going to take longer.”

“Nice! Can’t wait!” Aquarina licked her lips. “I wonder what food you ate back then, Quetz!”

“Ah, food?” Wondered Quetz. “Well, there was a lot of things we ate, we hunted giant fiery birds with our arrows and bows too, sometimes, large six-legged lizards.”

“Six legged lizards? Fiery birds…” Aquarina wondered. “Aren’t those monsters from Cloudia? Were they roaming the world that long ago?”

“I don’t know… What’s Cloudia?” Quetz wondered.

“Ah, it’s a huge floating continent we’ve visited, where Sylphy used to live!” Said Aquarina. “It’s weird you never went there seeing how you can fly and everything!”

“Not everyone could fly for very long, only adults that were moderately powerful. Flying takes a lot of energy, so we need a lot of food to make up for it,” explained Quetz. “But I suppose I am different now… I could soar everywhere I want, anywhere all around the world… maybe.”

He looked at his own hands, surprised at his strength, and the new possibilities within it.

“For now, let’s have a meal though! Let’s talk while eating,” Nepheline said. “Alright?”
