Chapter 1140 - 1140: Training from Hell
Unnamed High-Level World
Unnamed Star System
DANGER ZONE: Abyss Labyrinth
December 31st
Year 1054, 50th G.C
Swirling azure-rimmed portals of darkness opened in the remnants of the planet’s ruptured sky, pulsing like hungry maws as they consumed the incoming meteor storm.
Over ten million square miles of landmass, transformed into flaming meteorites, were devoured by the portals, which then merged into a single massive portal that collapsed inward.
All of the devoured mass and energy condensed into a space-time distorting singularity.
“Here. Have this back,” Jamie said with a smile, and the sphere in his palm erupted into a storm of annihilation that rained down from above, each projectile carving through space, splitting reality at the seams and leaving afterimages of glitching voids in its wake.
Faced with the spectacle, Evan looked at Arthur and asked,
“What are we gonna do about that?”
Arthur didn’t hesitate to gather his spatial law energy as he replied,
“We don’t do anything about that. We run from that.”
He raised his left hand and activated his power over time, casting a monochrome filter across the entire planet as he stopped its temporal flow, naturally freezing the descending storm in place as well.
Arthur didn’t hesitate to warp himself out of the location, only to reappear in the exact same spot.
“…fuck.”
Jamie, the one responsible for his failed teleportation, smirked at Arthur’s curse as colour returned to the world, the falling projectiles resuming their trajectories and forcing Arthur and Evan to split up.
They dashed in opposite directions, weaving through the onslaught while unleashing slashes of sword and destructive law energies to destroy the projectiles in their paths.
All the while, Jamie, the source of the threat, laughed as he generated more deadly projectiles.
But make no mistake, even though he was laughing, any hit from those projectiles could kill either of the boys.
Arthur used his Gravity Authority to crush some of the meteors, redirect others into violent collisions, and turn the rest into dust, while Evan blew them up with his crimson flames, sending flaming dragons forward that devoured everything in their paths, switching to ice to freeze any projectile that got too close.
To add context to the current situation where a poor planet was suffering this unfortunate fate, Arthur, Evan, and Jamie were ‘training’.
Yes, you read that correctly.
All this continental destruction and extinction-level devastation? Just ‘training’.
This planet was the fourteenth in a row to be unreasonably damaged by the three Singularities ‘training’ over the past month.
Jamie was teaching the two teenagers how to properly use their new powers.
For Evan, it was the ability he had gained after his meeting with Ranus. For Arthur, it was his newly acquired Aspects.
Evan had initially tried to escape this hellish training by claiming he couldn’t use the ability until he returned to the future, but Jamie disappeared for a moment and came back with an hourglass containing cosmic energy swirling within it from Ranus.
Before Evan could even ask what it was, Jamie used his Imperial Privileges ability on it, and when he flipped the hourglass, reality warped, and Evan suddenly had a 30-day trial run of his Prismatic Origin Singularity form.
Left with no excuse, Jamie grabbed him and Arthur by the collars like they were cats, teleported them to the Abyss Labyrinth, and began this torme—correction, training session.
As the two teens weaved through the storm of life-threatening projectiles, Evan thought it would be a good idea to shout at Jamie to use his Child of Space skill more often, intending to treat this as training for facing the Second Finger.
He immediately realised how terrible that idea was when Jamie’s ‘Basic Attack’ nearly cut him in half, and the ‘Intermediate Attack’ consumed everything from the sky to the planet’s surface, swallowing the falling projectiles and tearing a massive chunk out of the planet’s magma layer.
Arthur opened a spatial gate and jumped in to run, with Evan following right after as another burst of spatial power erased the space behind them.
They emerged into a crashing wall of water that slammed into them, sending them tumbling toward the molten terrain below. Evan crashed into the magma, his clothes melting almost instantly, but he quickly leapt back into the air, cursing as Jamie appeared behind him.
Evan spun around and unleashed a full-powered strike, but unfortunately, Jamie effortlessly phased through his attack and sent him flying with a bone-crushing punch.
Thankfully, Arthur prevented him from being thrown too far, and the two teens immediately pulled out their trump cards, with Evan assuming his Flame Singularity form while Arthur activated his Aspect of Destruction.
Unfortunately for them, that only seemed to entertain Jamie, who used his Space Privilege to distort space and attack from higher-dimensional angles.
They coordinated their attacks and struck with full power, with Arthur using his Extreme Nothingness Authority and Evan releasing waves of destructive flames that turned the surrounding land into a sea of fire and lava.
But Jamie simply warped space, redirecting Arthur’s strike toward Evan, and though Evan managed to raise the Gazebind Aegis in time, the power behind Arthur’s attack cracked the shield.
The resulting shockwave ripped the sky apart, blasting Evan across the horizon and hurling him through three floating islands, leaving trails of shattered stone behind him before he finally crashed into the ground.
Arthur was sent flying downward by a kick from Jamie, crashing into the molten sea below.
As for Jamie, he casually dusted his palms as if finishing a simple chore, then teleported all three of them to one of the few floating islands Evan hadn’t smashed through, tossing the two teenagers onto the ground like worn-out rags.
“Lesson’s over, kids.”
Neither of the two boys could respond since they were too busy groaning in pain from their heavy injuries.
Evan’s left arm was a mangled wreck, and it could’ve been worse if Arthur hadn’t weakened the power of his Authority at the last moment. And although Arthur had only taken a single kick from Jamie, it was worth remembering that Jamie was a Deity.
Even a restrained kick from someone of that level was enough to push Arthur’s HP deep into the red.
Still groaning from the pain of his fractured ribs and arm, Arthur managed to force out a few words.
“…and I didn’t land a single hit…”
His words were true. Evan was the only one who had managed to land a clean hit on Jamie, and that had only happened once.
Jamie paused for a moment, seeming to consider it before nodding in agreement. Snapping his fingers, he used his Authority of Life, sending waves of restorative energy through their bodies.
Evan’s arm twisted back into place, his wounds closing as though they had never existed. Arthur’s ribs realigned, and his lungs, once pierced by the fractured bones, healed completely.
He spat out a mouthful of dark blood before taking a deep breath, finally free from pain.
Once the two of them were healed, Jamie began his lecture.
“Alright. There’s a lot I could nitpick, but I’ll just focus on the major issues.”
He turned to Arthur first, pointing out every flaw and issue he’d noticed during the fight, from the boy’s slow transition between his Time and Destruction Aspects that left him open to counterattacks, to his dependence on Lostvayne for channelling their power.
When he was done with Arthur, Jamie shifted his attention to Evan and began listing out his shortcomings as well.
“Evan, I’ve mentioned this before, but your Flame Singularity form—while powerful—has some serious drawbacks.
For one, you can’t use any element other than ‘Fire’ during that time. Your flames burn through ally and enemy laws alike, meaning you can’t receive support either.
And because this form is so destruction-focused, it’s easier to use your red flames, which in turn makes it much harder for you to use the abilities of your other flames.
I noticed how much you struggled to heal yourself while summoning those Serpentine Dragons earlier. If I had asked you to use your orange flames at the same time, your magic power would have destabilised, and all three techniques would have collapsed.
You need to work on that.
The ‘Fire’ you embody isn’t just about Destruction. It is Support, Purification, Healing, Dominion, and Creation as well.”
Clapping his hands together, Jamie wrapped things up.
“Beyond those major flaws, the rest will improve with training and experience.
I know these abilities put a strain on your bodies and energy reserves, but you need to use them as much as possible to become more proficient. That way, you wouldn’t struggle when you’re forced to rely on them in a real battle.”
The two boys silently nodded, too drained to say anything in response.
Arthur’s eyes began to droop, and he was on the verge of sleep when a sudden disturbance forced them wide open.
A Temporal Distortion.
Jamie sensed it too, and both of them turned their attention toward the source, which was Evan.
Before either could speak, Evan broke the silence.
“I know.”
With a weary sigh, the Rogue Hero lifted his right arm, showing how it flickered in and out of existence.
“I’d been able to tell for the past few days. My ‘time’ in the ‘past’ is running out.”
The only reason Evan had been able to remain in this era—this ‘past’—for so long was because the Authority of the goddess who sent him back was masking his presence from the Universe’s corrective laws.
That concealment had now faded, and the Universe had finally taken notice of his existence as one belonging to a future point in the flow of space and time.
“How long do you think I have?” he asked.
Arthur studied him quietly for a moment before responding with a sigh.
“Less than a day. The time left is getting shorter with every passing moment. It’s almost as if—”
“The Universe is trying to find exactly what point in the future you came from,” Jamie cut in, his greater Temporal Authority allowing him to perceive the finer workings behind it.
Now that the Universe had recognised Evan as a temporal anomaly, it was attempting to trace his origin in order to send him back. His Singularity nature made the process more complex, but it wouldn’t be enough to stop it.
As for his glitching body parts, that was the Universe’s way of marking him, ensuring that even if another Authority tried to conceal his presence, it would still be able to locate him.
When Jamie finished, a faint smile appeared on Evan’s face, and seeing this, Arthur remarked,
“Someone’s excited.”
Evan laughed at that.
“The word excited isn’t enough to cut it.
Do you have any idea how worried sick I’ve been about everything happening while I wasn’t around? The amount of anxiety that plagued me on a daily basis is beyond words.
But more importantly,” his tone softened as his fingers brushed against the ring on his left hand, “you have no fucking idea how much I’ve missed my fiancée. If it weren’t for the fact that even when I get back, I still wouldn’t be of marriageable age, I’d probably marry her on the spot the moment I return.”
Saying Evan missed Eliza wouldn’t have done his feelings justice. A part of him had thought about heading straight back to Year 1055, but he still had something important to take care of in Year 1038, so he had no choice but to make that stop before finally seeing Eliza again.
Hearing Evan speak about how much he missed her made Arthur chuckle softly.
“You miss your fiancée, huh? Well, I can kind of relate.” He paused briefly before adding, “Speaking of marriageable age, it just occurred to me that the age on your status changed at some point…”
When Arthur mentioned it, Evan stretched and replied.
“My birthday was sometime in October. But thanks to a certain bastard,” he shot a glare at Jamie, who silently looked away, “We were stuck in the Infernal Dimension back then.”
Arthur silently nodded at that, and Evan tilted his head before saying, “Speaking of which, Arthur, the age on your status board changed this morning, too.”
