"Mages, focus on the gap between buildings. They’re trying to hide from the rifle fire," she shouted.

Streaks of Lightning followed her instructions, and a wave of golden light enveloped the front line of warriors as Amber, who had been asleep when the commotion started, finally made it to the front lines, along with a few other late risers.

That brought renewed vigour to the warriors, who had been receiving both constant injuries and constant healing.

They hadn’t lost any members yet, and they didn’t intend to.

But it would take every healer that they had when the Academy’s force was facing dozens of pig men at a time.

Empty magazines were beginning to stack up around Kalli’s feet as she switched between weapons again. She had emptied her Lasrifle more times than she cared to count, and even the hand grip of her rifle was getting hot by the time that the monster tide began to slow.

It had only been a few minutes, ten or fifteen at the very most, but it looked like every monster in the district had come to them.

At least, she certainly hoped so.

If there were more, or something nastier, waiting out there for them, they were not going to be in any shape to deal with it today.

"Mages, focus area spells further back. Soften the Rat Demons before they reach the front.

Second Rank, prepare water for the first rank when the next lull comes."

Many of the students looked confused, but Gerry was already in motion, running toward them with cases of water bottles.

The warriors couldn’t afford to put their weapons down to drink, but they needed both energy and hydration. So, having the second rank help them with it was the best way.

There was a gap in the battle where the mages had cleared an entire group of rat demons, and the second rank quickly poured water for the first rank, and handed them a bite sized rice ball to chew on.

Kalli hoped that nobody choked on it, but they seemed happy to chew it as they fought, and the number of monsters was beginning to decrease.

Then, the first good news that they’d seen all day.

A large group of young adults charged into the back ranks of the rat demons, hacking and slashing away with improvised weapons.

"Warriors! Push past the shield line and clear a path for our reinforcements! Maces forward, aim low and knock the rat demons back."

The younger warriors rushed to obey, and faintly, Kalli heard the sound of trumpets and singing voices. The bards were doing bard type things for the battle, giving everyone some sort of buff.

To her, it felt like extra energy. But she didn’t know exactly what sort.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t mana. She could feel that, as she was keeping track of it so she could recharge her rifle. But it was either extra stamina or energy to increase agility, which was harder for her to quantify, as she was kneeling and firing over the wall as she shouted orders.

Niall led the group, his new Rare Grade daggers flashing in his hands as he danced through the rat demons.

Every cut was a sure kill, and even those who didn’t die instantly twitched in agony on the ground as they frothed at the mouth. He had gained the [Poisoned Strikes] skill, which would deal enough at his level to kill a rat demon with little more than a scratch.

So, he wasn’t too worried about being surrounded. Plus, his team had already finished their quests for the day, and if he left them dying for the warriors behind him, they could get credit for the kills.

The students that they rescued all patted him on the shoulder as they passed by, limping into the security of the inner ranks and into range of the healers.

Within seconds, they were looking better, though their clothes were tattered and blood stained.

"New arrivals, find Gerry. He’s got food for you. Eat and rejoin the battle, we still need everyone we can get."

The new arrivals looked for the source of the voice, and saw Kalli standing on the wall. She had one foot up on the crenellations, her period drama robes fluttering in the breeze and an automatic rifle in her hands.

It was possibly the most insane thing that they had seen today, and that was saying something, given how their day had gone.

The rescue group had just returned to the main group when the sound of pig men cheering reached Kalli’s ears.

There were more coming, and they were bringing something big with them.

The first assault was nearly defeated now, with none of the demons even daring to try to flee. But this group was different.

They weren’t wearing tattered cloth pants, they were in metal armour, carrying real weapons. And their leader was huge. It was close to five metres tall, an enormous pig faced brute that could actually attack the ranged troops on top of the wall with its massive club.

There was no telling how much damage that would do to the wall if it tried to force its way in.

The Academy was secure, but that was mostly due to the thick stone wall that surrounded it. If some giant smashed holes in the wall, they would have no real way to repair it or to properly secure the Academy.

Kalli caught a gesture from Sanchez in the corner of his eye. He was pointing at his laser rife, then the giant, then his eyes.

Kalli gave him a thumbs up. She should have enough now to recharge the rifle, and if they both focused fire on its face, they could almost certainly blind it if not kill it before it reached the lines.

They would have to because the warriors were already panicking.

Kalli shifted positions so that she could rest her rifle on the wall, and waited for the Sergeant to signal.

"Now."

They both unleashed thirty beams as fast as they could steady the rifle and pull the trigger. The giant staggered back, its eyes instantly vaporized. Then, it tried to swat ineffectually at the attacks, but that only managed to get a few attacks to hit its hands and wrists.

The club dropped from its hands, and the armoured pig men roared a battle cry as they thundered toward the shield wall.
