Chapter 57: The Basics
Chapter 57: The Basics
Kalli decided that the only real way to get them through the day tomorrow would be to give them weapons, but they didn’t seem like the sort that would actually be competent with swords if they weren’t given training.
Some surely would be once they had time to accept reality.
But for now, it was likely better to give them all flanged maces so that they could just swing at the rat demons and not worry about getting a good cut in with a proper angle. A mace was simple and effective.
There were three mages and a ranger that would need a bow or something, but she would have to ask them what they actually knew how to use.
The System might have granted them knowledge about a specific weapon, or they might have already known how to use one. The mages relied less upon weapons. But accessories were expensive, and what she could give them wasn’t going to make too much difference.
She couldn’t pick the stats on an item, so there was no telling if they would get mana regeneration to help them fight longer, or more spell damage.
It wasn’t worth the risk to try for that right away. It would be better to get them a wand or staff that would have a solid chance of improving their spells. That would get them through the first day or two, while they struggled to reach level two and learn how to be heroes.
Kalli prepared to bulk purchase the weapons and went looking for Niall.
"Pres, can I borrow you for a bit? I’ve got weapons for the new kids, and I want you to give them out."
The Rogue chuckled. "I get it. Alright, what did you get them?"
"There are thirty-six flanged maces for the warriors, three wands for the mages, and the ranger will have to come talk to me because I don’t know what he can use.
The rest are bards, and they can do choir type stuff or play instruments in the yard.
The Academy should have everything that they need."
"Got it. Maybe put the items in the lobby of their dorm? They’re all staying in their old rooms, but they’re still recovering in the gym, with others watching to make sure they shower before coming back.
They’re basically on probation, and there are a lot of hard feelings today.
The six that we lost were all popular among the other students at the University, and the attitude of the kids we rescued didn’t help things. I’ll get them motivated in the morning before we head out.
If we can find them enough rat demons, it will be fine. If not, I will figure something else out."
Kalli smiled. "Well, if all else fails, I will take them out to hunt rat demons. I’m fairly sure they’re just as scared of me as they are of the monsters."
Niall laughed softly, then winked at her. "Didn’t you know? To a bunch of private school boys, girls of all sorts are terrifying."
Kalli followed him to the dormitory building, and they arrived just in time for Reggie and a few others to escort the kids in.
Niall flagged the group down. "Perfect timing. I’ve got weapons for you to get used to. You’ll be using them tomorrow, so get familiar with them tonight. Flanged maces for the warriors. Anyone can use those well enough. For the three mages, I got wands. They add spell damage, which is most of what you’ll need to start. The members of the band can grab their gear on their own, and Kalli will need to talk to the ranger."
The hesitant young scout came forward and bowed politely. "Miss Kalli. My class taught me how to use a bow, do you have one? I got two points of strength from today’s training, so I think that I can use a proper one."
Kalli nodded. "Here. A compound bow and a bunch of arrows. That should get you started, just remember to recover them where you can because they have to be purchased with points from completing missions.
Someone will sort out the details in the morning, and if there aren’t teams willing to take you all out, I will bring groups to kill rat demons all day until you all have the points and experience.
They’re only a metre tall, and a good swat with the mace should kill them. But we will make sure that there is a healer available in case of emergency."
"Got it. We will go practice. It should be like swinging a bat, right? Well, maybe in the morning? Because I can’t really feel my arms," one of the warriors replied.
"Go sleep. You can practice and then hit the gym before breakfast, get some more gains, and you’ll be even better equipped for the day. Trust me, the change is huge. The System wasn’t joking about awakened people being actual heroes once they grow into their abilities."
Then, she turned and walked out. Reggie and Niall could do the rest of the motivational speaking.
Kalli went to the yard, where some of the off-duty special forces were running a martial art introductory session, and joined in for a bit more practice, despite the sore muscles from her earlier workout.
A bit more knowledge about actually fighting was never wrong, in her opinion.
This training class was all stuff more basic than what her boss had taught all the long-term employees during their regular after work outings to the gym or the underground fights.
But it was good to keep in practice and learn something new because fighting monsters was not the same as sparring in a ring with people you were going to see every day at work.
"Kalli, care to come demonstrate? It looks like you’ve got a good grasp on the basics." Sanchez called.
"Of course."
"Swap out of the robes, unless you plan to get into a melee fight while wearing them."
Kalli stowed the robes so they didn’t get dirty or damaged, leaving her in the light composite battle armour. That was perfect for sparring in, and it never seemed to get dirty from wear.
Or perhaps that was because it self-cleaned when she took it off every day?
Either way, it worked as sparring gear.
